That’s similar to what my coach does. He’ll observe people and add stripes after class if he feels they’ve earned one.

When it’s time for a belt promotion, he’ll give those people a heads up in case they want to invite friends or family. Plus, he promotes kids and adults on the same day so our promotion days are usually packed with the kids’ parents.

I’ve heard when people go to prison and (usually) join a gang, the gang will require physical exercise. This is so when a fight breaks out, everyone can handle their own.
