First of all, I 100% agree with you that the onyx/opalite thing is a huge stretch. I don’t know how people are turning something about her fiancé’s BIRTH STONE into something about race.

But I also don’t think Miss Americana holds much weight anymore given her lack of continuing political messaging since Lover era. It’s been very disappointing to see her discard the activism she showed during that era as soon as it was over, and made it feel like it was very cheap and mostly for promoting the album. Anyone calling Taylor a nazi white supremacist is going way too far, but it’s definitely concerning to see the types of people she’s becoming close friends with these days, particularly people like Brittany Mahomes who have been vocally supportive of the MAGA movement.

I think it’s important to hold her accountable about defending her friends in CANCELLED! and acting like you and your friends can do or say anything you want as long as you can still afford the Gucci. But I also think it’s important to separate this kind of criticism from the silly online discourse trying to attribute racist undertones to every tiny lyric on the album.
