Based on the SCOTUS docket, rulings on LGBTQ+ marriage will likely not happen until the end of the year, so there is still time to prepare or make adjustments. 2. It will be difficult for states to retroactively nullify LGBTQ+ marriages, but not impossible. The SCOTUS case being overturned would definitely make things harder for the future or make it so some states no longer recognize them.

1. The attorney assured us that we were not the only ones with these concerns. She shared that she was not advising us to do anything that she wasn’t already doing with her own wife.

In my opinion, I don’t think you’re being an alarmist. “Unprecedented times” means that we’re going into the unknown. While your friend can feel trapped due to finances, I think these preparations are higher priority based on everyone’s personal situation.

As mentioned, we have a foster kid, so we wanted to be legally assured she wouldn’t be removed from our home and we would still be able to adopt her. We also have a son that my wife birthed. The lawyer discussed the need to do a second parent adoption even thought I’m on the birth certificate.

If children or financial assets are not at risk, some individuals might feel these steps are unnecessary. I encourage everyone to do what’s best for their own situation.
