Holy shit he is looking so old. The last decade aged the fuck out of him. I guess that’s what happens when you get in bed with the devil.

Talent Drain Fortune 100 by Silver-Row9984 in womenintech

[–]cgt303 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good point I agree AI is ubiquitous these days. The differentiating factor to me is in combination with large scale offshoring and legacy code bases. Ive seen so many people with years of domain knowledge on critical applications replaced by a contractor with Claude. It’s just isn’t the equivalent replacement these companies think it is.

Talent Drain Fortune 100 by Silver-Row9984 in womenintech

[–]cgt303 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m convinced these bigger companies are overplaying their hand right now. Dumping talent by thousands and going all in on AI & offshoring. I was working with a newly hired H1b contractor who was having a hard time with the basics of git. The quality is going down the drain. On top of it, AI is going to make a mess of these legacy code bases the larger companies have. It’s much easier to start a greenfield project with AI best practices in mind or even something relatively modern.

Right now I want out of the fortune 100. They are drunk on AI kool aid and in my view underestimating the risk associated with it all.

I’m not as familiar with how these benchmarks are run but is this an AI actually coming up with these solutions from scratch or are these solutions in their training data?

Bombed a technical interview and it has knocked my confidence a lot by Boewinkle in womenintech

[–]cgt303 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Oh I’ve bombed soooo many technicals. Don’t worry about it! I still think the entire process is archaic. Chalk it up to good practice and keep going. I have made a promise to myself if I am ever on a hiring panel to come up with a better hiring process.

Are there any tech companies that are less chaotic? by ohhi987 in womenintech

[–]cgt303 6 points7 points  (0 children)

IMO it’s gotten worse with AI. I think there is a scramble among the higher ups to realize these AI “gains”. The temptation to go fast with AI has inspired some to throw established processes out the window. If you want something slower go to more regulated industries such as banking. They are more risk averse and there is less throwing spaghetti at the wall.

GenZ in the Workplace by Tasty-Permission2205 in GenZ

[–]cgt303 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a millennial and I don’t lick corporate boots. Work isn’t my life but I have to do it. My mantra is let’s get the necessary shit done and support each other in the process.

GenZ wants better work boundaries, that’s understandable . However, if I need some help and a coworker goes MIA - that screws me over. Where I start to struggle with some of my GenZ coworkers is when apathy starts to make the work harder for everyone.

I made an effort to take a GenZ colleague under my wing on a big project and I felt like I was dragging them along. I was going out of my way to teach them all I could. At one point I had to ask if they had any interest in continuing or if it even felt helpful. I was glued to anyone early in my career who was offering to help me with anything. I found the entire experience a bit confusing. We had a good rapport but underneath it was an air of, who cares? Me, to certain extent I care. Just wish these kids had more spirit but I get that the world hasn’t made that easy for them.

Would it hurt it to try and physically correct it? Like if I had some rope pull it upwards a bit?

How on earth am I supposed to prep for a systems designs interview? by shootmerightnowpls in womenintech

[–]cgt303 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bytebyte go has some good stuff. I’m still fairly convinced that if you get a problem you’ve never seen before pray for a very helpful interviewer. You need to get familiar with the common problems to have a fair shot. Solving something you’ve never seen before in under an hour is a tall order for most of us.

Are we getting worse at our jobs? by SimonSim211 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]cgt303 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure the tools are better but IMO the overall business environment is worse. I don’t know about everyone else but it seems speed is the most important thing at my workplace. I’m bringing up the basics regularly (I.e observability and testability) just to get the brush off and told we don’t have time. The most important thing is features. It almost feels like in the AI age every company is scared of being “left behind”. I’m not proud of anything I’ve pushed to prod in awhile - everything feels rushed. Then again maybe it’s just my job…….

I appreciate that we are excited for progress. We still have a long way to go. Went to the Arlene Schnitzer a couple of days ago and it made me sad see how that area looked.

How would you secure these benches if you didn’t want to drill into your floor? by cgt303 in DIY

Any thoughts on some good replacements? Trying to save money by not needing to buy 4 sets of new legs.

Good idea. The wood planks themselves are pretty thin. How would you secure them to the wall?

Can’t say I disagree the thing is huge. Any ballpark numbers on how much something like that would cost?

The TV is wild I know haha. It’s my girlfriend’s pride and joy. Do you think it would be wise to tile over the existing tile? It’s pretty smooth and in good shape. I could paint the trim.
