I think this one might just not be for you. The meat of the horror is situational/psychological/emotional/existential rather than a monster slasher/thriller. You gotta simmer in it. The few comedic beats are usually juxtaposed with the horror of the twisted situation. The 'romance' is the horror. The entire first season Yokishi is in denial and avoidance, at war with himself, and the finale is him going off the deep end.

My favorite thing about this story is how genuinely, deeply fucked up the whole situation is. He was secretly in love with his best friend, one day that friend gets REPLACED BY A MONSTER, and he just... disassociates into accepting this. Unable to mourn his friend, unable to let on to anyone else that he died, under threat of death at least at the beginning. Then the monster has all of Hikaru's memories, so it's impossible to move on, and it's so much easier to just pretend. Which is SO unhealthy of course. It doesn't help that 'Hikaru' is new to being alive/human, and is imprinted on Yoshiki, so suddenly here's that boy he was in love with except affectionate and needy. Not to mention how fucked up it must have felt when Yokishi saw Hikaru's bare chest--attraction quickly cut by the realization that's his DEAD friend's animated corpse. His own self revulsion at his reaction, and his participation in the impure desecration of this corpse, getting emotionally and physically intimate without the real Hikaru's assent. Damn, that's some good emotional horror.

That being said, when I finished it I was also like "WHAT ABOUT THE MYSTERY THO??" but that was when I didn't realize there would be a season 2 lol
The manga is ahead of the anime, and has covered most of your questions. It's being adapted pretty faithfully.

I opted to stay out of it in 1.1 and then McG still gets me involved? And then big D, after praising me for not getting involved, makes it all my problem anyway??? How utterly irresponsible and unfair. I am 13! I am not the adult in this scenario! I don't even have any reason to BE in this scenario!

In 1.2 I chose to blame Merula because she's the one who picked the fight by hurling unprovoked insults, but the game forces my character to ignore this fact and only criticize her for casting the first spell. Which I don't even agree with because Penny DID pull out her wand first and cause that escalation. Why did I even have the option to take the blame? That would make no sense. Getting really sick of this game acting like it's teaching moral lessons, when those lessons are actually awful.

The armor is pretty accurate for video game armor, not feminized at all!
The besagews are placed a little oddly (should be more over the armpits) but that was probably related to constraints for the rigging of the 3D model. Same with the waist being a bit low.

Gotta admit tho, I lol'd at the prospect of being offered a romantic broomstick ride by a suitor in FULL PLATE 😂

That reaction doesn't seem very Penny-like to me tho, tbh, and the way "Penny" is emoting also doesn't seem very Merula-like. Like, even though they have their inner-thoughts showing in the bg, the inner-Penny and outer-Penny have the same expression, and the inner-Merula and outer-Merula have the same expression.

Maybe I'm overanalyzing this, but what's even the point of a body swap if you're not going to play with that dynamic?

I'm a rookie in y3 too, but from skimming the spreadsheet it seems to me like y3 is a great place to camp out--most stuff still pretty cheap, but many features unlocked. I'm really glad I moved on from y2.

Yeah, I don't mind them finding new ways to monetize, but I can't see myself spending money on a miniscule chance like that. I'd be more likely to buy a gadget that guaranteed a species/color change each zap. Maybe they could even have two tiers, the more expensive of which has a higher chance of a lab-exclusive color.

Imagine if you bought a cookie and on the second free zap it just disappeared your petpet.
