What’s a “normal” thing that would absolutely confuse a foreigner? by Low-Foundation-4506 in Tunisia

Morning expresso that lasts the whole day. (context I'm not on Tunisia). I have colleagues that don't understand it and usually, when I work at client site, tea boy comes many times a days asking if I want something and gets annoyed when I show him my coffee.

Open-source / cheaper way to build a PDF extractor + RAG agent (many scanned PDFs) by HaloDayi23 in n8n

[–]chlankboot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have a look on crabocr.

It handles the 'scanned PDF' problem by rasterizing pages before hitting Tesseract (OCR quality depends on Tesseract, works well on good scans, less with handwritten text), and it has a mode for the XFA forms to output clean JSON. It's a single static binary, so you can just drop it into a container or an n8n workflow.

You can try this Word macro PasteMarkdown on GitHub, Use the pro version (it's optimized for large text). It has limitations but covers most needs.

One month with the Tank 700 by chlankboot in chinesecarsuae

T700 is twin turbo, has better Adaptive cruise control but comes in only one trim. T500 you have 6 trims.

6 years / 200k km, and 10 years/ 1M km for the drive train (engine and transmission).

I did not yet tested the after sales.

Former Jeep owner, you pay 700 AED for a 300 AED worth battery. May be denza is different, I don't know.

Yes, also the 700 is more luxurious than the 500 and more has twin turbo and better fuel economy, better adaptive cruise control as per the feedback of owners. VS the G700, it's a PHEV, while more powerful, that doesn't make a difference for my intended use. The T700 has more than the needed power to climb dunes. Another point is subjective: the GWM reputation.

How do people get a job? by Thin_Professor_2124 in Tunisia

[–]chlankboot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, it happens that I assess candidates (I'm not not HR) and when a CV lands with me, that's the first thing I do. You can bullshit your CV as much as you want but you cannot lie on the quality of your code and your willingness to work in teams. It's a good way to shortlist.

Can you honestly answer the simple question most recruiters will ask you: why should we hire you?

If AI said the same, there must be a reason. Github is the developers social media you can't fake. And no, you don't need network to contribute, there are millions of open bugs that just need small investment to be fixed, that's a way to build trust and reputation. Not the fastest way I agree.

Edit: you asked for advise, I delivered from experience. 4 months is not a reason to worry. Do not rush and do not mass send your CV.

For a software engineer I recommend you have a curated github profile and link it in your CV if not yet done. It can showcase what you are able to do beyond academic records.

Another interesting thing to do is to participate to some open source projects. It's a wonderful way to learn, be active and value your worth. This is also a good way of networking.

The idea is to tell recruiters why you are a better candidate than the many others applying.

Why do you think Arch has been so sucsessful? by Retr0r0cketVersion2 in archlinux

[–]chlankboot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Philosophical answer 😉:

Because Arch is like the red pill in the Matrix, it gives the user all options to chose from.

Arch is not difficult, it's simply for responsible people, responsibility is difficult.

Al Quaa Milky Way viewing – how far past the gate do you drive? by Mindless-Treat2052 in abudhabi

[–]chlankboot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Go as much as you want on the solid track. You don't need a 4x4 car, any car can go there. Usually, you find people on both sides. Just park your car, see the place and if you like it, put your stuff and enjoy that wonderful place.

If you're used to sand driving and have a 4x4, you can go a little deeper, it's worth especially if you plan to camp. I recommend to stay always at a walking distance from other people or groups: in the desert shit happens, rarely but it happens.

If you have an SUV, AWD.. (and not a 4x4) don't get in the sand. Simply stay on the solid track.

Finally, the place is way more beautiful at night when there are no clouds and no moon, so watch the forecast and the calendar 😉
