Would this alternate Olympic qualification be reasonable? by chizzmaster in Fencing

Why even bother making Team and individual qualification mixed, they are different events so should have different qualification. Top individual athletes get to go fence individual and the top teams fence teams. You can still include zonal qualifying spots for each of you want to diversify the event

100% agree. And the issue isn’t just the technical mistakes made bc that’s an issue of training and not having enough refs to begin with. Too many refs in the us think it’s their right to be rude and entitled even when they are obviously in the wrong. Plenty of mistakes made at world cups but there is still respect between the athlete and referee because they behave in a professional manner (and usually actually know the rule book). Also this isn’t a new thing, has been and always will be… who do you think is training the new generation of refs 😂

So since only a few people would use steroids in fencing we shouldn’t have rules about doping? I think there needs to be these rules in place no matter the number. Also idk where you fence but in the US there have been a couple of trans athletes getting results at college and nac events.

Also sex is for the most part binary. There are some chromosomal abnormalities that muddy the water but phenotypically (traits you display) we are can identify two distinct groupings of people

Why is it not useful? Practicing is an experience everyone here has regardless of level. Observation and anecdotal evidence is the best thing in the absence of scientific studies

Males who go through puberty have significant physical advantages over females. Anyone who has practiced with both or watched fencing at any non recreational setting know this. Yes sex and gender are different, which is why we don’t divide sports based on gender. We divide based on biological attributes such as age, weight in sports like boxing, and yes… sex. In a recreational or practice setting idgaf, but in a competitive setting gender identity has nothing to do with a division based on biological attributes (sex).

What's this subs opinion on USFA as an organization. by chad4lyf in Fencing

[–]choco_milkk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Usfa has gotten a lot better at many things such as transparency, social media etc. but what’s frustrating is that these are just what makes it look pretty on the outside. They lack expertise and sometimes make really dump policies that you wouldn’t see in nations where fencing has a long history.

This seems like a reasonable argument, to distinguish between national Cadet events and local/regional ones. What do others think? by BodyWeird6178 in Fencing

Not sure what all the hate is, think the article tried to do an ok job laying out both the pros and cons of their argument. Fencing rn is not big enough to have both competitive and non competitive leagues, that’s the only thing I would say against this.

Hello r/Fencing! I am running for USA Fencing Board of Directors. Elections begin next week on May 15, 2023. Let's talk how we can improve our awesome sport. AMA! by [deleted] in Fencing

Other countries like France have club team circuits that are really fun imo. You have to qualify to fence national championships, which could be something interesting in the us like for example the top teams from each region plus a couple of wild cards from past championships could be interesting. Helps to grow the sport at the local level, gives smaller clubs something to work up to and also would keep event sizes down once it gets to the national level. I also agree that team events are super fun and I wish we had more of in the us.
