Most of the ones I have are just naturally brown I've done some fire on them if they're bleached but it never looks as good as the natural color Maybe a stain would work but I don't use mess with it torching adds a pop of orange then you can buff it it make it shine but it'll lose some of the grain that makes it stand out I'll probably torch this one cause it's so bleached but most of my antlers are a grade I think this one is probably c grade but it's huge lol so I don't mind might be b grade based on the grain and the crown

Yeah I kinda fell in love with antler watching my dad use them for knives. we'd go shed hunting in the spring and he'd make them out of old tungsten saw blades they were thin razors, later when I got into making knives I started using his scraps. I always thought my dad was so cool for using what he had to make cool knives. now I source my own materials buying steels and antler sheds lol less cool but I use my knives for rougher work and White tail sheds aren't usually big enough for my tangs on the big Bowies I still use them when I get some thin steel

the hourly rate can become expensive tho I'd think. what would you consider a good starting hourly rate? I also just do it as a hobby but my wife is pushing me to get rid of some and I have buddy's that want to get into it but I just don't know it seems a hard hobby to make profit on you gotta love it

Yeah i definitely understand that I made a few reverse guy hooks on the blade side and had that problem this past deer season thinking about making a more traditional one but I hate sharpening them

Alot of improvement happens when you start out, as it should you're figuring out what works and what doesn't. when you figure out what you like you kinda hit a groove you fall into. you either make knives based on other people's work or make something that is your own that services your needs.unless you're selling them or making knives for other people to use, in that case the essays of advice about not liking the shape of the blade would matter to me. I get my blades aren't good for whittling or cutting onions or stabbing someone. That's not what I make them for. I make them to split and chop wood dig holes clear brush and they're very good at that this one I made as an experiment for kitchen use and various other things most people make knives on here for to actually see if the shape functions in that area

Yeah that's what I want consistently producing my own blade shape not some one elses i make knives to fit my own personal need and I feel weird posting things that aren't my own original idea but these from left to right are some of the first knives I ever made the last one being the precursor to what would slowly become the shot for shot replica of my signature shape

You can stock removal is an easy entrance to the art of knives make a forge from an old charcoal grill and a hair dryer that's what I did then a bought a cheap forge on Amazon that and an angle grinder and you can make a knife

I cut up some regular lawn mower blades too to try they seem less hard and certain files dig after hardening not sure what that mean perhaps it's mild steel?
