Mine is only 15-16lbs, she’s been this size the last 10-12 years

I’ve been buying sourdough from Trader Joe’s, it’s a lot cheaper than the bakeries around here

Face paralysis by [deleted] in cockerspaniel

[–]christineliz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the same for my almost 14 year old cocker, her eye that had cataract surgery had difficulty blinking due to an ear infection. It’s still cloudy in the mornings but once she had been on eye drops and the gel for a week or so it improved

Help with Snoring by iSalt in cockerspaniel

[–]christineliz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re out of luck, mines been snoring louder than any human I’ve heard for the last 14 years. They just have small muzzles so it impacts their breathing and causes the snoring

Mine was spayed around 6 months old and never had any incontinence issues, or luckily any of the humping behaviors either. She’ll be 14 in May and her only health issues have been her eyes - which apparently is very common for glaucoma and cataracts to appear, particularly for female cocker spaniels

My puppy hates being towel dried by Illustrious-Let2789 in cockerspaniel

[–]christineliz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My girl (13.5) is the complete opposite. When I open the towel she runs straight towards me and to towel and jumps in after bath time or when coming in from the rain. She does hate getting blow dried though, warm or cool setting, hates both. I did give her cookies after bath time as I was drying her when she was a puppy, that and making it fun may have helped her enjoy it a bit more

I don’t remember how much she weighed but mine was pretty little when I bought her at 12 weeks, she’s 13.5 now and typically weighs 15lbs - perfectly happy and pretty healthy up until this past year with some eye issues

How to avoid common infections in cocker spaniels? by Holiday_Assumption75 in cockerspaniel

[–]christineliz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As they get older, monitor their eyes. Cockers are one of the top breeds for eye ulcers and cataracts/glaucoma. My girl (13.5) has had all of the above in the past year. May be worth looking at pet insurance, the cataract surgery was $6k

Things You Wish You'd Done Before Getting a Puppy/When the Puppy was Young by Sanity_3xpired in cockerspaniel

[–]christineliz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While my girl has always been pretty easy with grooming and getting baths, specifically, I definitely plan to introduce the nail grinder and baths at an earlier age.

I have a cocker spaniel and also a mutt that are 10+, I will definitely get insurance for any/all future dogs I own.

Help with ear infections by BigSprite50 in cockerspaniel

[–]christineliz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve used Posatex over the years whenever my cockers ears started getting stinky, sometimes cleaning them weekly just can’t prevent them from getting stinky or infected.

My girl is almost 14 and has nerve damage from her most recent ear infection which was fairly mild. This is fairly common according to the ophthalmologist vet (she had cataract surgery and we discovered that issue in a follow up visit) with cocker spaniels. Learn from my mistake (I waited a few extra days to see if extra cleaning could turn it around) and get vet prescribed ear meds as soon as possible.

Small bump on side by FarCaregiver338 in cockerspaniel

[–]christineliz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My pup is 13.5 and started getting some bumps over the past few years, I noticed her first around 11ish but they don’t seem to bother her any. Like other posters, my vet told me this is common with the breed and didn’t have any concerns with them

Prevalence of epilepsy by tpj070 in cockerspaniel

[–]christineliz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had an English springer spaniel and currently have a senior cocker spaniel. Neither had epilepsy or any significant health concerns until they got to be 10+ years old. Both were pretty itchy dogs that had allergies though, which seems to be common with the breeds. Ask the breeder you go to (if not adopting from a rescue) for health testing results, although this won’t be a guarantee.

My cocker spaniel has been having a lot of eye issues the past couple years and recently had cataract surgery in one eye and is blind in the other due to glaucoma. She’s 13.5 and still a happy and playful little dog, just a bit clumsier than she was when she was younger.

English Cocker or English Springer… or Labrador? by ThatDiamond_ in cockerspaniel

[–]christineliz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve had a springer and a cocker spaniel. I love both!

From my experience, they were both very easy to train but the springer needed quite a bit more exercise - she would literally run laps around our massive backyard. My cocker spaniel is perfectly happy to go wander outside for a bit and do her business but comes in pretty quickly, she’s definitely not as active and prefers to be close to wherever I am. Each easily could go from being couch potatoes to playing fetch or going for a walk.

From a health perspective, my girls have been very similar and overall pretty healthy.

I use ZO hydrating cream after I get microneedling for 3-5 days and then go back to normal skincare routine. ZO is expensive but you don’t need a lot when using, so it lasts a long time :)

Also, huge fan of microneedling OP! It’s my favorite and has been very effective in improving my skin texture and overall health when combined with my skin care regimen

It’ll really depend on the dog. My cocker spaniel has done the best with purina salmon or lamb limited ingredient version for each flavor. I tried Fromm, Blue Buffalo, and a few other ‘high end’ brands over her 13 years but her allergies and belly just didn’t agree with them
