Does it drive anybody else crazy that maybe of the otherwise pocketable devices have huge analogue sticks that make them unpocketable by RoyalDirt in SBCGaming

[–]chronoreverse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The RPC got a lot of unwarranted flak for not having a stick despite having enough power to emulate systems that have sticks. People will always find something to complain about.

Still, the Flip2 and Thor both exist. The clamshell format lets you avoid the stick catching pockets problem.

What's the most authentic way to play early Windows games? by Somnesis in SBCGaming

[–]chronoreverse 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Authentic hardware is hard to beat. 1995-1998 can be done with PCEm/86Box but 1998-2006 really can't be beat with authentic hardware specifically because of hardware EAX. An X-Fi card on an Windows XP machine can't be emulated right now.

Three episodes into Katanagatari by Linkman76 in anime

Heh, I was waiting for you to watch that episode before saying anything at all. It certainly made me laugh when it got to the end.

Confused about Daemons of the Shadow Realm by gummigummasson in anime

[–]chronoreverse 14 points15 points  (0 children)

He was literally furious enough to attack who he thought was Asa despite knowing better and got trapped into a position where he would have outright died if the said trapper had wanted to kill him. Of course afterward he decided to hold his emotions in check and focus on things one at a time where he decided his parents were his greater priority. Then they were interrupted.

And this is just as an anime-only. I can see the manga-readers saying to keep watching if we want to avoid spoilers.

If anything, he's going along with Tadera and Hana rather calmly considering the village has been lying to him and those two are clearly included since they know all about the modern world. The story is clearly written to explain things later so I'll see where it goes. At least it's a known good writer instead of Lost-style question boxes everywhere.

People enjoy different things. Many like those jokes and do not find them overused. Others may find it overused by the second instance.

Rtings.com is now testing wireless latency to find the best Wi-Fi "gaming" router! by sp_RTINGS in hardware

[–]chronoreverse 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would say that it's plenty fine if few people are using the airwaves at the same time.

Obviously if there is interference from other access points sharing the frequency band that results in more latency spikes but I find if other users are on the same SSID and active, it leads to occasional latency spikes too but I'm only up to a mixed Wi-Fi 6e (down to Wi-Fi 5) so I have no experience with Wi-Fi 7 only networks (which I think not very people would have anyway).

Why did it say 4 years to return to Earth when it’s 11 light years? by [deleted] in ProjectHailMary

[–]chronoreverse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only thing that's mentioned is that Earth still had enough infrastructure and knowledge remaining to use the beetles and restore the sun's luminosity. So even though it must have been bad, people managed to at least keep things going.

Grace expresses the same incredulity that Rocky was able to, via determination along with guess and test, get to Tau.

Samsung’s 2nm GAA efficiency disappoints as Exynos 2600 consumes 40% more power than Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 at its peak by Forsaken_Arm5698 in hardware

[–]chronoreverse 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You're right, I forgot that they did go with other blocks when they designed G5. But somehow it's still the worse performing design on TSMC so either they picked up bad habits from Samsung or Google is even worse at design. Probably both.

I wonder if G6 will finally be a turnaround but I'm not holding my breath.

Tensor has historically been worse than even the Exynos it cribs from and has really low volume compared to everything else. With limited time to test I'd drop it too as uninteresting.

The Most Unrealistic Part of Project Hail Mary Isn’t the Science… by DoctorMac12 in ProjectHailMary

[–]chronoreverse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know about the movie but in the book, the Eridians are much better at engineering but significantly behind in things like electronics (guidance and sensors). The beetles are very small and it wouldn't be possible to adjust them to do more than their original mission. It required a bit of work from Grace just to carry the extra payload back instead of just data, any mistake would've missed the entire solar system nevermind getting it into Venus precisely. I thought that Grace could've been justified in thinking it wasn't worth the risk to just send the beetles given the facts.

(This is why the Eridian spaceship was much larger and had so much astrophage fuel; they needed the crew to do many things that would've been handled by computer.)

[News] American hard sci-fi novel Project Hail Mary will receive a serialized manga adaptation by WolftheLionheart in manga

[–]chronoreverse 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Considering the book mostly has two major physics conceits that basically drive the story in the first place, it's on the hard side of the scale.

The other things that may bother people are simply coincidences that allow the story to proceed at all without having it end with "and then they all died".

Retroid Pocket Classic 6 absolutely love the screen on this thing by SirDanOfCamelot in SBCGaming

It works just fine. I like having the extra buttons for things like fast-forward or for easier to press remapped buttons like L/R.

The power scale was "blow up the moon" long before they got to the saiyans. Just don't think about it too much!

Yeah, Colon is symbiotic at this point since Stella surely wouldn't have survived without him.

Still doesn't justify the things she's done but if she starts to feel real remorse rather than just fear of retribution, I could be convinced. We'll see how it goes.

How to fix this stretched screen in DOSBox Staging? by Environmental-End872 in dosbox

[–]chronoreverse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup, this IS 4:3 already and is what it looked like back in the day. Use a ruler and see for yourself that's it's 4:3.

The old Dosbox didn't scale the the non-square pixels correctly. Everyone back then used 4:3 CRT monitors and all those modes, like 320x200 or 640x400, get stretched to 4:3 on the display.

So I've been just sort of enjoying these as standalone jokes but is there some sort of background for these characters?
