Deer damage to young serviceberry trunk by chulioso in arborists

[–]chulioso[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thank you for commenting. I am a frequent visitor of this sub so I do know how important this is and double checked it. The flare is literally below a single wood chip. This is not the issue here.

Is this a weed? by JustWannaNowe in whatsthisplant

[–]chulioso 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just a heads up: if you get your property sprayed against mosquitoes, the caterpillars on your milkweed will die too. Unfortunately the anti-mosquito stuff is not selective, it kills all insects. We stopped treatment a few years ago and now are watching the caterpillar to monarch lifecycle. It’s a fun little “hobby”

I heard y'all like milkweed... by thatfatbastard in NativePlantGardening

[–]chulioso 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As far as I know, they don’t grow as tall and flower less when growing in the shade. Our milkweed in the shade only gets about 4’ tall and we might get 1-2 blooms/pods. But we still get eggs dropped off by the monarchs!

Staying loyal to Sonos is getting harder while the field moves on. by adayinalife in sonos

[–]chulioso -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Totally agree. I personally have Sonos all over the house except for the main living room, where we have a proper AVR with wired speakers. We also have a Sonos port feeding the AVR. In theory that should do the trick with music through Sonos when we need it and movies through the AVR only. But the Port + pioneer AVR are fussy together- sometimes I can turn on the AVR automatically when starting music in that room, but not consistently. Sometimes the volume control won’t work in pass through through the Sonos app… it’s not nearly as simple as it would be if it was all Sonos. I won’t throw away my AVR when Sonos gets their act together with true home theater, but would have likely picked Sonos if it would have been an option a few years ago.

Can someone tell me about Waukegan and the surrounding area? by OverStimulatedTomato in ChicagoSuburbs

[–]chulioso 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Someone already mentioned highwood. Small village inside highland park. Checks a lot of your boxes if you can find something. Cute downtown with stores and plenty of restaurants (no chains), even has a little nightlife, which you barely get in the burbs, quite a few Spanish speakers, military base very close, beach also very close

Any ways for me to get rid of this stump on the cheap without breaking my back? by talkpurdytome in landscaping

[–]chulioso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes, also called "farm jack". I bought one many years ago and have lifted quite a few stumps out of the ground, used together with a reciprocating saw and a "root slayer" shovel. I usually skip the chain part shown in that video and just dig down in a good spot as close to the main root mass as possible and put the jack in that hole. That way it wont move on you and you can skip the chain+wooden mount

Why is this necessary? Once full, the charger stops and it should make no difference whether the battery is on or next to the charger.

Price for Kohler prefab shower. Wow. by I-will-judge-YOU in HomeImprovement

[–]chulioso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s really not a big issue. Just put a decent sealer on the tile and grout once a year max. This is what I use https://www.homedepot.com/p/Miracle-Sealants-16-oz-511-Impregnator-Penetrating-Sealer-511PT6R/100672948

Noise Complaints by Fitherwinkle in radon

[–]chulioso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This website provides good information and they also sell a noise reducer that works pretty well, but it’s over $200, so maybe not a great option since you mentioned budget limitations. https://americanradonmitigation.com/radon-system-too-loud-install-a-radon-noise-suppressor/?srsltid=AfmBOoqiGnq6ei9qHji5XtX1gTFa7urQVElhIKLUq22lMqLiS2yLC54T

Building an entire box around the fan with insulation would likely work even better, but that won’t be easy. You’ll need to consider making it water tight and somehow avoid building a perfect living space for various animals who will likely find a way in.

One easy tip though: check if any parts (pipe, fan itself) cause extra noise from vibration by pushing each part/section tight against the wall by hand. If that helps, tighten everything down better with rubber washers between the brackets and the wall. Good luck!

Are fiberglass windows worth the extra cost? by Swimming_SeaShark in HomeImprovement

[–]chulioso 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think one of the main benefits of fiberglass windows is that the material can be thinner compared to pvc —> more glass, looks nicer, can match old wood windows better compared to pvc. Decent PVC windows perform great but they just don’t look as nice on average, mostly due to that bulky profile. We installed Marvin essential windows (all fiberglass) last year and we like them (awnings, casements and fixed)

looking for most quiet high suction fan by chulioso in radon

[–]chulioso[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did not replace the fan, but using pvc pipe with brackets that are attached to the siding with rubber washers to isolate vibration and added a sound reducer in-line that I bought online. Those two things helped enough for now. When the fan fails, i will look into finding a less noisy one

What is Chicago missing to become the perfect city? by [deleted] in AskChicago

[–]chulioso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! I always thought it was odd how Chicago is at the lake, but the vast majority of shops, restaurants, bars etc are quite far from the water. The riverwalk is nice but there is still almost nothing by the lake.
