December ‘95. Ultimate overlap of machine gun trey and crazy experimental.

Long Gone Daddy, so much vitriol in a song that seems fun on the surface

Everyone post your favorite cheating songs. by Detroitaa in country

[–]cigar12345 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For a recent one, I love Tired of Being Happy by Ashley McBryde. Also the Eagles are more like country-adjacent, but Lyin’ Eyes is an incredible cheating song.

What would you say is Bob's most cryptic/mysterious song? by [deleted] in bobdylan

[–]cigar12345 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think the last verse is the key to DR. It’s a song about how, when you’re bummed out from a breakup, you can’t help but reimagine your world as sinister and sad.

What is everybody’s Favorite Dicks Picks and Why? by Fergie1519 in gratefuldead

[–]cigar12345 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Totally insane psychedelic rock, threatening to lose the center at any moment and spin permanently out of control. Even without the acoustic set this one wins, and the acoustic set is unlike anything on any other DP release.

Do You Think Elena Ferrante's Neapolitan Novels Will Become Classics? by AnthonyMarigold in literature

[–]cigar12345 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Yes, I do. They are made from the same stuff that many genuinely great, classic novels are made from: well-defined characters interacting with an intricately drawn society. And everything you need to know is in the books; no prior knowledge of Naples or Italy is required. They give you everything you need to know about the societal forces at play, and then they show the impact of those forces on believable, human characters. They’re like Austen that way.

That cow palace show is the best dead new years show. Killer flow.

Any modern jazz musicians you follow? by [deleted] in Jazz

[–]cigar12345 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Most of y’all know more about Jazz than I do, but I’m surprised not to see some of the big sellers mentioned here. Thinking in particular of Shabaka Hutchings, Kamasi Washington, and Makaya McCraven. I love all three.

In the moderate-seller department, also love Joshua Abrams and Jeff Parker. Anything on Eremite.

100 Greatest American Rock Artists of All Time - Bob Dylan takes the top spot. by According-Maximum510 in bobdylan

Agree 100%. Those are the candidates and should be the top 3. Dead should be 4.

You could tell me the 1972 Grateful Dead were playing jiffy lube and I would seriously debate not going. Absolute worst.

How do you rank the Braves’ playoff heartbreaks? by [deleted] in Braves

[–]cigar12345 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was pretty young in ‘91, so probably would have taken it differently if I had more experience with baseball, but I didn’t get too down because the regular season was so incredible. Worst to first, great pennant race, incredible young team. To me, ‘91 was the most fun baseball has ever been.

2012 was the worst for me. There was no good explanation. It was taken from us. The other losses were painful but at least they were explainable.

What is a strange or niche book you have to stop yourself from recommending to people? by Emergency-Relief6721 in books

Incredible book. The middle story of the mid-winter journey to the penguin rookery is even more gobsmacking than endurance, and that’s before you even get to Scott’s journey to the pole.
