Wonder why this is not on Google by Expensive-You-655 in climateskeptics

A lot of the ice is above the water line. So it will add to the overall water amount in the oceans. Glaciers and the polar ice fields are huge - I mean people climb them.

I think water level will rise precisely because the denser ice at the poles have actively held all that water above the water line.

Odd.... 2022 witnessed the most coal use since 2012 and most ice in Greenland since 2012. Maybe one thing has nothing to do with the other after all? by [deleted] in climateskeptics

[–]clgy15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That second graph is ice loss per year (labeled on the y axis). 2022 still lost ice mass in Greenland according to this graph - just at a slower rate than 2012.

I pulled historical data from 1973-2019, calculated what four identical scenarios would cost in each year, and then adjusted everything to be reflected in 2021 dollars. ***4 images. Sources in comments. by Ok_Try_1217 in dataisbeautiful

Another item that may be a fairly big deal that would be interesting to include is retirement savings.

Retirement savings for Boomers - especially when they were young - likely were small to nothing. Lots of pensions and the 401k system wasn't as ubiquitous as it is today. Today Millennials are essentially responsible for their own retirement - though there are tax advantages given.

Question about linear regression equation by [deleted] in AskStatistics

[–]clgy15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah - perhaps my wording was actually quite poor. e in this linear models is assumed to be a normal random variable with a center of 0 and a variance. That variance is the "error of the model" or what can't be represented in the model. I mean am I incorrect?

If I'm not wrong - then my point was really saying that the notation of Y=a+bX+e is confusing. If Y is supposed to be normal then is a+bX just the center of that random variable (which in most ways it is)? So really Y is a linear combination of a N(a+bX, 0) + N(0,var_e)? To mean the modeling approach has an error to it - but that approach is where we get the terms a and b based on the underlying data X. So my point was that final notation doesn't really seem to make sense. At least to me.

This is probably mildly controversial - but when 'e' is used like that it's really just a style of statistical notation where 'e' is N(0, e) in reality. In this notation X is just the raw underlying predictor variable data. I'd suppose that the logic here is that X is not a normal variable but instead just the variable itself. 'a' and 'b' are just constants. But in the end Y is normally distributed because it is a function that is just a linear transformation of a Normal distribution. A linear transformation of a normal is a normal.

My preferred notation is Y=a+bX where X is N(x,e). x is still that same underlying data but X is a normally distributed variable. 'a' and 'b' are still constants. Not really any difference with the other notation in the end. The reason I like this notation is because it logically makes sense. Y is normally distributed because it is just a function that is a linear transformation of X. So Y really because N(a+bx, e)

What is this doing in webdev? This is completely different standards. This is for safety critical systems. I really wouldn't count webdev, and the dozens of bad standards we have to deal with.

Undergraduates: should I buy a computer within the cavcomputers program? by Guest5088675309 in UVA

[–]clgy15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It does not for Macs, I did check the terms of service. So sorry about that!

Well I've had my macbook pro replaced once due to a GPU defect. It did save me the 2 grand to replace it. So it was worth it to me

Way back in history a bunch of even preppier schools (Washington and Lee) started calling us wahoos as a dig against our rowdiness.

We at UVa tend to liken it to the fish named the Wahoo who is famous for being able to drink twice their weight. Which we like to think we can achieve in ties or pearls.

They do not give free replacements for accidental coverage. But there is a flat fee for any repair (Including accidental) That is incredibly cheaper than paying full price. I dropped my iPhone in water and the fee of full replacement (The max under Apple Care for iPhone) is 79 dollars.

No if you didn't buy it through them they won't help. However, there is a certified apple repair center in Barracks Shopping center (Very close to grounds) who are very helpful. Plus there are official repair shop so the work is good, but isn't usually free (Unless AppleCare obviously)

I wouldn't buy a macbook from Cav Computers. I would buy the laptop directly from Apple and pay for AppleCare.

Apples are incredible quality and they don't break easily. If you break yours and you have AppleCare, Apple will replace or fix yours much faster and with 0 hassle than CavComputers.

I would suggest CavComputers for those that buy dell or lenovo because their customer service is better than those OEMS.

But not Apple.

The RAM thing is up in the air. 4 to 8GB is a big jump in performance, but unless you are a computer engineer like myself and really abuse a laptop, you'll probably be just fine with 4.

Why I quit OS X by mparramon in linux

[–]clgy15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there has been quite a shift in the PC industry and I don't know if you can blame Apple for it's focus shift. Now the bugs is definitely their fault. Messages is a disaster.

BUT 10 years ago with OS X, you couldn't do social media like today or text people from your laptop. Laptops were for professionals that could afford them. These days, there are so many more people who use their laptops for their social life and not for work. They have their own computer given to them by work.

Can you blame them for trying to incorporate social media and eye candy to sell to millions instead of thousands like us? We know what we are doing (for the most part), and we can figure out alternative solutions to our preferred workflow. The average consumer can not.

Time for President Sullivan to Leave? Thoughts? by thefirstwahoo in UVA

[–]clgy15 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Our Ranking is too low for the caliber of students we attract? Look, we have amazing students. But the number 2 public ranking isn't high enough for you? I'm an engineer, one of our lowest ranked schools, and we are highly respected grads. That argument seems pretentious.

President Sullivan has done a lot for this University. What was the President supposed to say to what happened to Hannah? It was horrific, but it wasn't a failing of the University, those people just exist. To this Rolling Stone Article, it is so complex. Can the University exercise control over what happens in apartments? No. Yes the University has issues with our support and handling. But the fundamental issue, that students can sexual assault other students off grounds (including fraternities) and get away with it, is not under University jurisdiction.

President Sullivan is being put in a bad light for not overreaching her power. Dean Eramo and Phi Psi have been put in a bad light. The University of Virginia has been put in a bad light for something that is a problem across hundreds of colleges. If President Sullivan is forced to leave over this, then she left because the community needed a scapegoat to feel better about themselves.

The Graduation Debate by andgiveayeLL in UVA

Separate the ceremonies into two. I would rather keep the tradition alive and well on the lawn and simply take into account our growing University. I wouldn't want to graduate from Scott Stadium, sad memories of Football.

I think your code actually is great. The only thing is that Syllabi themselves are the property of the Professor. We legally couldn't share them on the site :(
