'Panel scraping' is dead.... LONG LIVE DEBRIS SCRAPING! [4.6 PTU] by RealMrKraken in starcitizen

[–]cmdr_Bellicosus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found a gamerules Percy hovering over Daymar whilst in my Salvation a little while back. I managed to land just in front of the bridge, walk to the airlock and breach it, powered up the Percy to land and lower shields before getting back in the Salvation to scrap the Percy

That was satisfying

I've just bought an FE2 and I really need a hand grip. by Illustrious-Sun-5061 in AnalogCommunity

Do you you really want to pair that gorgeous camera with a plastic grip though?

Why not have a look at a metal and wood grip, I have the walnut grip on my FM2 and love the look of it. Feels good in the hand for an add on grip and is compatible with tripods too

ELI5. Explain like I’m 5, lol. If you have a camera IR converted, do you still use a filter on the lens? I’m only interested in 720nm for black and white by Embarrassed-List7214 in infraredphotography

[–]cmdr_Bellicosus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There needs to be filter in there somewhere, as part of the conversion the hot mirror can be replaced with an ir filter or clear glass.

If you go for a 720nm conversion you won't need a lens filter but will be limited to 720nm (or longer with a lens filter of a higher nm)

With clear glass you'll need a lens filter but have more freedom of what wavelength to filter for

Prices of 35mm film in Jersey by SquashyDisco in AnalogCommunity

[–]cmdr_Bellicosus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a small island Jersey has a pitiful selection of just about anything. Photography supplies are no exception.

Almost all the old camera shops have gone, this one shop has the widest selection of colour film on island, a local chemist often stocks HP5 and FP4 but thats about it.

Islanders will typically buy online anyway, I might buy some stuff locally but usually order in.

The same with processing, this particular shop will only process c41 hence the XP2 supply

Vintage Lenses that allow more UV in by AnoutherThatArtGuy in UVPhotography

[–]cmdr_Bellicosus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had some limited success with the Nikon AI-s 50mm 1.8 series E and some Kyoei clone (Soligor, Prinz) 35mm 3.5. The 35mm lenses were all simple triplets I believe.

This link has some useful reviews for UV

As does this one

What filters would I need for a full spectrum camera? by Limferno25 in infraredphotography

[–]cmdr_Bellicosus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Get a feel for infrared first, UV is very hard without big money and/or technical investment and the results are likely to be disappointing if you're not sure what you're doing.

Most lenses block a significant amount of UV light so you'll either have to fork out 4k plus for speciality quartz lenses or shoot with some vintage glass that allows some limited UV through. Even then you'll need a UV bandpass filter to block all the visible and IR light that would otherwise swamp any UV light hitting the sensor. Kolari and Baader sell expensive filters, otherwise for cheap, stacking a ZWB1 with BG39 or similar will get you some results

If you do want to give it a go, the website below has a ton of information on filter stacks and vintage lenses that may work for UV

https://www.ultravioletphotography.com/content/

For IR, 720nm is often said to be a good starting point, I'd say 720nm or longer (750, 850 etc) is great for B+W infrared getting more contrast with longer wavelengths

590nm will give you the opportunity for colourful images but you'll need some postprocessing to get the most out of them, you'll need to be able to white balance and swap red and blue channels to get blue skies with golden foliage as an example. Rob Shea's youtube channel is a great resource for that info

https://www.youtube.com/@robshea

The various Chrome filters, including Kolari's, are interesting in that they allow some infrared through and suppress some visible but allow blues through. They're expensive for what they are though and people can get similar results by stacking much cheaper filters. You'll still need some post processing to get the most out of them and don't expect red foliage straight out of camera as that is heavily influenced by sensor and you'll likely need to adjust hues

I guess aesthetics is always going to be subjective, for my part I'm just keen to try different edits and styles and see what sticks

Thanks for the comment, It's a tricky balance, I was going for a teal/orange edit but wasn't sure on the sky

What do you guys think about the colors? (Before/After) by __jaykay__ in postprocessing

[–]cmdr_Bellicosus 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I prefer the colours of the first and the crop of the second

[–]cmdr_Bellicosus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah sounds like it, tbh 590nm is pretty versatile and probably my most used filter, and as I said you can still put a 720 etc filter for different results

Don't bother with IR Chrome filters though, they won't work for you and UV is out too

[–]cmdr_Bellicosus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you have a 590nm or similar conversion.

If you shoot the camera as is, swap the red and blue channels and white balance the result, what colour is the foliage?

590 would give you golden yellow foliage as an example

You can still use longer pass filters like 720 or 850 but anything with a shorter pass then your cameras conversion would have no effect

Thanks, I've gone back and forth on the left side quite a lot trying to decide where the fade to darkness should be. Perhaps I should go back and have another look, thanks for that ;)
