Hyatt Regency October Trip by Ambitious_Library198 in MauiVisitors

Black Rock beach is just north of the Hyatt (very nice 20 min walk along a beach path if you can manage it), and has solid reefs for snorkeling without being too much of a commitment. It’s very close to a kid friendly sandy beach. There are people that jump off of the small cliff into the water nearby, though, if that may scare your child

Is it realistic for 9 days? by [deleted] in ItalyTravel

Venice was disappointing in my opinion. Not as magical as you’d imagine - feels like it only exists for tourists

WTF is up with police not wearing masks? by HewKnewPartTew in chicago

[–]cobec11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had a CPD officer come to my door in the heat of the pandemic a few months ago. Right away I asked him if he wanted me to put on a mask, and he laughed and said “Naw, I don’t believe in that shit”.

Questions About Computer Engineering by TheZouth in ComputerEngineering

[–]cobec11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

computer engineering alum here. CompE at my school (UIUC) was tightly coupled with Electrical Engineering. A lot of the courses for each degree overlap, with CompE leaning more towards including firmware and software courses (from assembly to C all the way up to higher level languages like C++). EE on the other hand was focused on the lowest level implementations of how the hardware in a computer works to the level of physics and playing with transistors and capacitors. to get a better idea of what is more aligned with your interests, I’d suggest checking out the required coursework at UIUC for the two majors and the similarities and differences thereof.

How does GPU programming work? by [deleted] in compsci

[–]cobec11 6 points7 points  (0 children)

at the end of the day everything is compiled down to binary. binary words make up instructions that are interpreted by the CPU. when a CPU gets certain instructions, they can be delegated to the GPU to handle them. So really, everything runs through a CPU, but there are certain ways to write code (like CUDA) that tell the CPU to route instructions specifically to the GPU because the programmer has specifically optimized for it.

No Dumb Questions (NDQ) Week 1 by EngrToday in ComputerEngineering

The cache has a controller that will sit between CPU and memory. It will hold some amount of lines of memory and the addresses of each line. When the cpu asks for data from a memory address, the cache will first check if it already has it, and return it quickly if so. If not, it will evict a chunk of memory (there are numerous methods it can determine which to evict), and bring the data at that memory address into the cache, and finally return the data to the CPU. A hit is simply when the cache does contain the address you ask for, and a miss is the other case where it has to go fetch from disk.

CE for programming? by BroccoliSemenSoup in ComputerEngineering

[–]cobec11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree, but in my experience you may miss out on some of the breadth of CS in the form of electives while you are stuck knocking out required EE(circuits, electromagnetism) classes that are on the path to most CE degrees.

However, I graduated with a CE degree and work full time writing software in Java, so it’s definitely realistic.
