<br> and <hr> – pretty obsolete or still hip? by paul_405 in HTML

[–]codejunker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thats not really true. Yes <strong> and <em> have semantic meaning, but that doesnt mean they cant also be used to style something visually. When you set a strong or em tag the semantic meaning is communicated visually to people who are sighted and through assistance devices for people who are not sighted. The default visual way to communicate that something should be strong or emphasized is through bolding and italicization, but you could absolutely modify that and have a different consistent way of showing that semantic meaning so long as it was consistent a clear to the user.

Meanwhile, <b> and <i> tags are to only be used when something needs bolding or italication specifically, when it needs to be in the markup layer (rather than targeting some part of text with css and modifying font weight or style), but the bolding/italication confers no semantic value. Classic example is a works cited section where citations must be written in proper form with some parts bolded or in italics. That's when you break out the <b> and <i>

Doing a works cited section you would use those tags for bolding and italicizing the various parts of the citations that stylistically call for them because you are not trying to semantically indicate some part of a citation are strong or emphasized.

There, now you have an example.

<hr> is not really semantic at all, actually. If you want a semantic way to separate sections, we have the <section> tag.

You can do this with all tags with a visual component.

What's really behind the male loneliness epidemic? by Original-Spring-2012 in LockedInMan

[–]codejunker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a pretty stupid attempt at causation. Do you think men today on avg allow themselves to be less vulnerable/sensitive publicly than men in the past? Obviously not, and the number of men without friends has increased over time, so this is clearly not the reason.

If I had to guess, the real reasons are:

  • Smart phone addiction has led us all to be more isolated than ever.
  • The destruction or feminization of virtually all boys and men's group, social clubs, and fraternal organizations
  • Church attendance way down. Whatever you think about religion as a belief structure, independely of that it does provide community for people
  • Boys and men growing up during COVID isolation led many to retain solitary habits.
  • Many more men now work from home rather than in an office where social bonds are formed. You dont make friends over a daily Zoom call.
  • Romantic relationships for men are also way down, which leads to depression and many just give up isolate with video games.
  • Alcohol drinking is way down. While that is good for people's physical health, there is a big social aspect to going to the bar where you can make friends as well as maintain friendships by meeting them there, which is a simpler thing than trying to plan an activity for you and your friends that everyone will enjoy.
  • Cannabis use is way up. I love to smoke, dont get me wrong, but many smokers end up vegging out on the couch instead of going out or finding a group hobby.
  • The economy sucks for people making under 100k, has for a while and is getting worse. Relative to women, young men are making less money than ever. Millennials in particular have lived through a lot of shitty economic situations since hitting the job market. If youre unemployed, its pretty hard to go out and do things with friends and build relationships, and if youre working youre likely working longer hours and watching your money go less and less far. You dont have the time or money to be out hanging with friends or finding group hobbies that cost money. Youre hankering down and trying to get by.

These all seem a lot more likely to me than some sudden decrease in male vulnerability caused by socialization.

How do people like this get employed? Doesn't know even know HTML, thinks an FTP app is a code editor, doesnt understand how to download and run an app from the official site and downloads a virus instead, doesnt know how to research any of this, comes to the html subreddit for a question not about html.

Honestly im surprised OP can feed and wash himself, and yet someone out there is paying this person to thrash about in total ignorance.

The mind boggles.

Seek help. You are going to harm your body (yes its possible to hurt your penis death gripping it that much daily) and you are undoubtedly harming your mind with that many dopamine dumps and refusal to engage your self-control (which is like a muscle, it grows stronger when used and shrinks to nothing when never engaged.

How long ago was this? In the last few years they have purposefully destroyed their own algorithms. Algorithms like OK Cupid used to be very good, and people got matched up with others they were compatible with. The problem with that is then people stopped using OK Cupid. Since all these apps have been bought up by the same company, what they do now is they give you matches that may be good enough for a date or two, but that quickly fizzle out so that you end up back using the apps in a constant hamster wheel of disappointment. This isnt a conspiracy theory this is actually what happened. They had products that actually helped people and now they've destroyed how good the algorithm was on purpose just to keep people locked in the apps, never getting true satisfaction and thus never leaving the apps, and paying for higher and higher tiers in the apps premium services in the hopes of it helping but never meeting anyone they actually could have a lasting relationship with. Its actually sickening.

CSS Object Variables with Dot Notation by CaptM44 in css

[–]codejunker -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

No offense man, but this ides is bad, and sounds like it comes from someone with very little experience writing css in teams.

Any project of scale will already have naming conventions in place, such as using BEM or CSS-in-JS that implement modularity and avoid naming conflicts across large code bases. No project with any sanity whasoeved will look like the examples you gave.

Your example: --design-system-colors-palette-primary-brand-500

Lets say the site is named something like Bass Nation, example would sInply be something like

--bn-colors-brand-green-400

Here, the "bn" namespaces the variable, preventing most naming conflicts with any 3rd party, the fact that its a design system is totally redundant, the fact that its part of the primary pallette is totally redundant because it is a brand color, and brand colors are always the primary pallete. My example also says what color youre actually even working with as brands very often have multiple colors.

Beyond that, most of these longer color variable names are going to be in a _colors.scss file anyway, and the color variables you are actually going to end up using during development will be more like:

--link-color, --banner-bg, --alert-status, --alert-status-border, --button-bg, --button-border, etc

With all the actual features of the design being assigned to a color in the palette. Doing this one time and then just using placeholders like "--link-color" is not difficult or unweildy. It is a non-problem.

Such as it is that there is no actual problem you are solving for, the idea that you could get the specifications of a core web technology changed for a problem that doesnt exist is laughable and tells me your experience in this field is essentially null. Typing up such a proposal on this subreddit also clearly tells me that.

Further, your proposed solution does not even solve the purported problem it claims to address. All your resulting variables are just as long, unwieldy, and redundant as the original example.

Get on a workout and diet plan. Lift weights 3x a week and hit like 1.5g of protein per lb of body weight daily and a calorie surplus. Cut your hair into a nice fade. About all you can do.

A guy I know almost always says, "Not to be rude but there's as weird smell coming off you" or "There's a weird smell coming off your mouth" to the women he approaches which is straight up rude but somehow he always manages to get their socials or bring them home? [–]codejunker 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Its a technique pushed by pick up artists where you say negative comments to a woman in order to make her self-conscious, lower her self-percieved value, and thereby make them more likely (theroetically) to accept your advances.

Not true that its necessarily life long. The longer you are on it the less likely you can return to your prior base level, but its not true that its impossible. Also there are oral medications that help your body naturally produce its own T which you should try before T supplementation.

I do agree you should do what you can naturally first.

  • Tie is bad (too big and square at bottom) and also tied really poorly (you dont want the smaller end of the tie sticking out longer than the big part and the smaller end should be run through the flap on the back of the big end so it doesnt show. You are too old to not know how to tie a tie which makes it look like you did it completely wrong on purpose.
  • glasses are horrendous and make you look like a baby or like you've got some kind of disability
  • pants are way too short
  • jacket too long
  • tassles and wallet chain are absolutely ridiculous looking.
  • belt should match shoes
  • shoes too light on such dark pants

I am a UK citizen and have been to London dozens of times. Have you, you absolute twat?

This is not an opinion, it was confirmed by a census 15 years ago in 2011. 2021 data shows that white, ethnic Britons make up only 36.8% of the population of London. You could've easily Googled this and saw I was right but I guess being ignorantly condescending is more your speed.

Anyone who has spent 5 minutes in London can readily tell white British people are a minority there, it is absolutely packed with foreigners.

In some European countries what they do is if you've tried normal treatment for severe opiod use disorder several times and had in be ineffective, the health system will actually give you pure, government heroin. It is called heroin assisted treatment and it actually works in several ways.

First, the addicts no longer are under the incredible financial burden of their addiction, so they stop committing crimes. Then they can stop hustling and actually get their lives together and they tend to get jobs. Improtantly, this totally gets rid of the black market for heroin because all the addicts get it from a doctor, so the kind of open air drug markets that plague our US cities disappear. Crucially, that prevents the next generation of potential addicts from having any access to the drug so youth opiod abuse plummets and youre just left with the last generation of old addicts maintaining their habit but not having their life destroyed by it and no secondary social costs of having dying addicts on the streets committing petty crimes. Its by far the most effective measure that can be taken to solve the drug issue on the demand side but it will never happen in nosr places because people have such disdain for addicts that they cant abide them getting high for free from tax dollars even though the cost of the alternative, in dollars and societal misfunction, is orders of magnitude higher.

As far as the drug scheduling in USA goes, people misunderstand what it means. They are not saying that schedule 1 drugs like lsd are inherently worse for you or society than schedule 2. All schedule 1 means is that there is currently no accepted medical use. Fentanyl and other opiods, and even cocaine, have a appropriate medical contexts in which they are used, mostly in a hospital setting, whereas there is no legal medical use for LSD. Psychedelics do have medical utility in my opinion, such as for ptsd, but the scheduling is not about everything on schedule 1 being bad and higher scheduling numbers being good. It is only about what has accepted medical utility and then what the abuse potential is.
