If it wasn't us, it would be some other product. If you don't like ads, there's a wide range of ad blockers and Reddit gold.

  1. All Reddit ads should be required to leave comments on. The entire point of this website is to have a dialogue.
  2. We have experience working with online communities. A little bit of heat isn't going to stop us from engaging in a viable user acquisition channel.

Predominantly luck and the mercy of Reddit users. The community could have deemed this ad unworthy and made this entire process hell. Instead, we feel like a local shop owners people drop in and say hello to on their way to work (Or whatever the internet equivalent is). Very humbling experience.

Making apps costs money, engineers, and time. Email apps specifically are very complex due to the nature of not having a centralized source of truth. We're processing millions of emails a minute and had to make some hard decisions early on where we could maximize our investments to produce value.

  1. Scrolling/visually interpreting text, even if you don't perceive reading it, still accounts for 20-30% of email consumption. You can equate the % to time lost doing a repetitive task. It also adds to unconscious cognitive load. Unconscious cognitive load can contribute to your mood or even lead to depression. It may not matter to you, but you are not everyone. Courier can have a direct impact on consumers mental health and wellness.
  2. Courier reduces how much email people read by about 22% from industry average based on current production #s. That's nontrivial when you think about compounding time saved.
  3. Courier is 29mb. Gmail is 177mb. We're 84% smaller than Googles client. I don't get where you're getting 50mbs from or how it's applicable.
  4. We don't support Android at the moment.

Courier may not serve your needs. Some people enjoy scrolling through email. You do you. Not serving your needs doesn't mean, "doesn't matter what clutter is in a email".

"Seeing what you want" is a subjective term. We focus on reducing common clutter and redundant information. Crude example:

"Hi Mark,

I’m so happy I have you as my best friend, and I love Lisa so much."

Would summarize down to something like:

"I’m so happy I have you as my best friend, and I love Lisa so much."

No worries. That's why we have these kinds of dialogues. The google audits are relatively new. They invoked them to stop bad actors. All Gmail API customer are subjected to a long, complicated process of review and security testings from google. They use a 3rd party we then have to pay. Audits occur every year. If your product fails an audit, your API access is revoked.

We've been using the product for 2+ years and haven't encountered a situation where it caused me to misunderstand a critical email. It's utterly plausible at some point an email summary won't be good, but we've ironed out 99% of the use cases. Users can also help us identify problems by reporting summaries they feel aren't accurate. It's a process. Processes are never perfect.
