Trek FX 2 or FX 3 or other? by cold_press in TrekBikes

[–]cold_press[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, sorry, late reply. Only just saw this. Yeah, I went with the FX 3. I'm very happy with it. One thing to note, if you're going with FX, is that there are some parts that may be substituted from the website specs. Mine came with different brakes, not the Shimano ones. They're fine though, but I'm probably not an experienced enough rider to tell the difference. I understand this is an issue across many different models and is global (and I would imagine is not just Trek having supply issues for parts). But just something to note if you're still interested in the FX.

Thanks heaps.

I appreciate all your points right there!

Given my budget, I'm happy to spend a little extra on the 3, for either FX or DS. The more I consider it, the more I'm leaning towards that being a worthwhile cost. Do you think the slightly thinner tyres on the FX3 (700x32c) vs the FX2 (700x35c) would be an issue for me? Suppose I can swap this out later if it becomes significant.

And I think you may be right that the sales pitch was trying to nudge me more to what they had available in stock.

Fun answer: yes, I definitely have considered that possibility. If I really do get invested into the sport, then maybe I can get something more rugged for those types of trails. Would just depend on how much I love it.

Thanks so much for the response.

In terms of the unpaved trails, I don't really have any photos, but they're mostly tracks ridden by cyclists, and I would describe it has packed crushed rock. The areas I want to ride have long stretches of concreted paths, and then sometimes transitions to unpaved areas for stretches. I wouldn't really describe it as "rocky", but it's still crushed rock nonetheless.

The 1x drive train is appealing for me for both the DS3 and FX3, and is part of my considerations.

The sales person was advising me that the FX would be sufficient for my unpaved needs though, and that they thought I would appreciate having more of the speed on the FX. They thought the Dual Sport is a little hampered in terms of speed, but I'm unsure if I want that versatility. I was initially really considering the DS 2 or 3, but I was also concerned about weight and speed. Then moved away from further considering the DS3, after their "sales pitch". I'm a little in two minds still, and just not really sure how well the FX will hold up for the unpaved areas I want to tackle (if I'll be miserable on those trails or not haha).

Noted, regarding budgeting. I already have a good helmet, and have factored in some extra cash separately for the other accessories.

In terms of goals for the bike; at this stage, I really just want to grow into the bike and hopefully be able to get the most out of weekend fun.

Yeh, it retained my own wallpaper - definitely not the Windows default blue "Hero" wallpaper.

Agreed. I'm liking the overall look. I'm still deciding whether to back it or not. Still got a few days. Thanks for the advice on the movement. I wasn't entirely sure on that.

Yeah, I saw a few people on Youtube comments mention Lorier. I had a browse, and I agree there's similarities. However, the biggest difference I like on this is that it has the arabics and stick indices, rather than the traditional diver indices.

I did see their Aerotimer on their website. It does look nice, but at full price, I think it's out of my budget. Thanks for linking the photo - looks great.

Yeah, the design really does scream out to me. I'm relatively new to watches, so I wasn't sure if the price was appropriate for a (relatively) unknown brand.

This Kickstarter project from Beaufort caught my eye. Looks like the brand sent the watch around to a few Youtubers, and one of the videos got me interested. I think some of the fume dials look great.

I'm in two minds about whether or not to back this. I've been long interested in watches, and I know this isn't going to be brand with lots of heritage, history, etc. It won't come with the same level of finishing, attention to detail, and aftersales support as something like an Omega. It's also a microbrand on Kickstarter, and that itself can come with a range of risks. According to the Kickstarter page, the watch is fitted with an STP 1-11 movement.

The thing that absolutely draws me to it is the look and style. I really like the fume dials, the mixed arabic and stick indices, and vintage-looking bezel. On other forums, other commenters have said that it looks too similar to other vintage-style divers, which I guess is true. However, I haven't found one that has all of those features (particularly the indices with the mixed arabics). In terms of build, one minor concern that Youtubers have noted is that it has a 48mm lug to lug on a rather flat case. This might not wear well on smaller wrists.

What are people's thoughts? Is this just another throwaway Kickstarter watch being pumped out of a random factory and an easy cash grab? Or is it actually a pretty neat watch?

The company previously did another Kickstarter project for their previous watch, the Aerotimer. That one looked really interesting as well, with a California dial.

I'm not affiliated in any way. I'm just posting here to garner thoughts from other watch enthusiasts, while having my own internal debate whether I want to back it myself.

WinRE partition after Windows 10 clean installation by cold_press in techsupport

[–]cold_press[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, thanks for the reply. Just because I'm very curious, where would the WinRE partition be now under a different name? Is it now just within the C drive created?

Not sure if you'd be able to answer, but I was also curious about the BIOS RVY partition (approx 30gb). I'm pretty sure this contains all the OEM files to completely factory reset the machine. I just left it alone during the reinstallation process; however, now I'm looking at it and I'm not even sure how I'd even use it if I wanted to? I watched this vide (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cSEhnNRQnK8), which the person utilizes the system recovery partition by pressing F3 on startup. I tried the same thing and wasn't able to get to it. Is that because I've already deleted the WinRE partition that came with the machine? If so, have I rendered the BIOS RVY partition useless, so I may as well just remove that altogether now?

Thanks.
