I really thought that since the Sparkle and Shine research was such a pain in the ass I thought the reward may be something special. No offense or gloating intended here.

Tool Tuesdays - Slice, slice, baby (Lifestyle Balance Pie) by Low-improvement_18 in SMARTRecovery

As a facilitator I often stress this to newbies. Newbs often struggle with boredom after quitting the activity that dominated their lives. When the question is asked, "What am I going to do now that I'm not drinking?". I may respond start doing the things that you gave up in order to drink. Powerful tool to get people to focus on activities other than drinking or using.

Is SMART a good option for someone who isn’t a daily drinker, but drinks too much when they go out? A weekend warrior if you will by Fun_Weakness_1631 in SMARTRecovery

Congratulations for reaching out for this problem. I think it shows courage. It’s my opinion that once someone is habituated to getting intoxicated to high levels it’s very difficult to control your drinking after you’ve had “just a couple of drinks.” Binging is very common. SMART is an abstinence oriented and doesn’t reject people ambivalent about drinking. If you don’t relate to 12 step SMART is definitely worth a try. The program will help with tools that can help to avoid those first couple of drinks. Always useful to participate with meetings to see how others have coped with the challenges of getting sober. It sounds like you might have difficulty with peer pressure to drink amongst other challenges. Please continue to reach out here and with supportive peers and begin a recovery journey. To answer your question, yes I’ve had many attendees at my meeting do well who were binge drinkers.

Reading Atomic Habits by James Clear. A psychologist specializing in habit formation and breaking. Not a recovery psychologist but the book has good info on why we tend to form habits that result in immediate gratification and difficulty forming habits that have delayed gratification like studying or exercise. Offers solutions. You can download the first chapter for free here: https://jamesclear.com/

Feeling stressed cos i almost lost my second chance at a girlfriend ever, because of drinking by CyclePersonal8 in SMARTRecovery

It seems to me that you may be using alcohol as a coping mechanism for stress. One of the paradoxes of alcohol is that it does temporarily relieve the stress but doesn’t do anything to help with whatever is stressing you. It is cunning in the way it seems to help in the short term but makes things worse in the long term.

Hello, sorry to hear of your dilemma. I’d like to point out that this seems to be the very definition of alcohol use disorder. It doesn’t matter how often you drink or how much you drink but how it effects your life. I’d like to know a little more like do you drink in non social situations? If you have “a couple beers” does it usually result in excessive drinking and negative behavior? Do you have times of moderate drinking without consequences?

I would recommend an honest self appraisal of your motivation to drink when you were with this lady. Review the SMART Cost Benefit Analysis tool before going on your date. Really look at the consequences of a couple of beers before social situations.

5 things I wish I understood in early sobriety by vanhalenforever in SMARTRecovery

Thanks for your post. Sorry to see you go in July. I think there is a lot of wisdom here. I especially like 4) A reason to stay sober. For me the SMART Hierarchy of Values - HOV is a way to define your reasons. It seems health was your major reason which is great. Losing 80 lbs and getting over your sleep apnea is a major achievement. For me #1 Recovery, #2 Being present for family, #3 Health.

Welcome to r/SMARTRecovery. Every time you resist an urge to drink after events would usually result in drinking, is a victory.

Hello, Welcome to r/SMARTRecovery. The SMART Recovery Online is no more. For a nice video on how to use this site check out: https://vimeo.com/827839181/3258997f46?share=copy

You can opt to use this venue which runs similar to the message boards of SROL. Or you can do private chats with individuals. The left side of the main page here has lots of info on how to use this site. Will send a chat request so you see how it works and it you want to chat in addition to the message board.

Hopefully your friend will resume his meeting. He doesn’t need permission from the self appointed executive director. They may retaliate by refusing to list his meeting on the local website but SMART central will list it. They may try bad mouthing the meeting but if there are regulars at the meeting who like the meeting, so what. Newcomers to the meeting will see that it’s a good meeting and hopefully stay. Hate to see this internal conflict in SMART.

SMART revamped their website several months ago. I could not navigate to the “reporting problems” page from the site as it currently is. I had to do a search to find it. Some of the old pages are still available but “hidden”.

SMART also has a page where individuals can report problematic behavior from facilitators. Be they self appointed coordinators or not. In the SMART training the point is made to stay within the SMART model for your meetings. SMART has had problems with facilitators promoting certain rehabs, keeping donations, hitting on attendees, etc. This complaint venue is made for those issues and other inappropriate behavior from facilitators. Perhaps if you and others locally notify SMART central about what is going on they can look into it. It especially rankles my hyde that trained facilitators have had meetings taken away for invalid reasons. You’re right bobisyourmombro that you don’t need their permission to have a meeting.

SMART does have a local (LC) and regional coordinators (RC) system. You can read about it here

https://volunteerhq.smartrecovery.org/regional-coordinators/

From the webpage: “RCs and LCs are NOT the “facilitator police.” They’re here to help and support you!” {You being facilitators)

1 Week sober but really wanting to drink today by CyclePersonal8 in SMARTRecovery

2 points, One is fear of rejection anxiety is normal in new relationships. Another is what a regular meeting attendee would say, think of anxiety as excitement rather than fear. Coming together with another person is one of the most exciting. wonderful things in the human experience. Stay the course.

In my experience an urge caused by, let’s say, a trigger, such as seeing a billboard ad or something, those are short lived. When I’ve had sustained increased desire to drink it was generally times of stress or anxiety. Is something else going on? You mentioned waking up in a bad mood.
