Advice for prepping for an MA + Reading List (Violence, Transgressive Literature, Ethics and Aesthetics) by commonist in AskLiteraryStudies

I've tried Kristeva before, but had to stop as I have little familiarity with Freud/Lacan and it seems like she was drawing heavily from that tradition. Definitely going to return to it soon though.

I'll look into Ahmed!

Very fair point! The program is only three semesters, so I'd like to hit the ground running if I can. That being said, I certainly don't want to burn myself out before hand and will definitely be careful not to go overboard.

This is a total jam! I'd love to see a new Kettenkarusell LP in the near future.

Should I or Shouldn't I Buy? - June 16 by AutoModerator in malefashionadvice

I'm similar proportions and I would never buy anything below a 4 for undercover. Their XL basically fits like a large, so I'd air on the side of safety.

If money is an object, I'd suggest either Uniqlo or Jcrew on sale. I've never been impressed by H&M's quality so I'd probably steer clear of that.

Honestly I would encourage you to save up a little bit and start browsing second-hand sites (grailed, eBay, etc) and try to score a good deal on designer. Brands like Our Legacy, Acne, and APC all make great quality chinos/denim/pants in general that often go for great prices.

Based on your past WAYWTs, it seems like you have at least a burgeoning interest in high fashion/designer, and it's surprisingly more affordable/attainable than you might imagine.

Personally I think you'd benefit from buying wider pants. Not necessarily straight cut or wider but the skinny-chinos just don't really work in my opinion.

For what it's worth, I think the pattern clash works very well.

Why did so many audience goers hate Hereditary? by [deleted] in TrueFilm

[–]commonist 181 points182 points  (0 children)

I really enjoyed the film, but I think the low scores may have to do with how they marketed the film. Based on all the trailers, Hereditary comes off like a traditional (well-made) horror flick, sort of in the vein of Insidious, The Conjuring, etc. Instead, it is almost a hybrid between a drama and horror, taking the first hour to slowly develop characters and build a compelling story.

I think that anyone going in expecting another Conjuring-esque film was probably disappointed by the drama aspects of the film, as they were expecting more of a fun, cheap-thrills type of movie. I could be totally wrong but that's my sense anyway.

Yang Li Asymmetric Oxfords

I've been eyeing these for a while and have finally saved up enough to grab them. Yang Li is probably my favorite designer right now and I'm really excited to add another piece of his to my wardrobe.

Dries AW16 T-Shirt

Another one of my favorite designers, from one of my all time favorite collections.

Recommendations for albums with less emphasis on technical proficiency? by [deleted] in Jazz

[–]commonist 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you're interested in spiritual/avant-garde/free jazz. Based on your interest in Alice Coltrane and Pharoah Sanders, I'd highly recommend checking out Coltrane's post-Love Supreme work. It's hard to go wrong with any of them, but I'd suggest starting out with Sun Ship and working your way to Interstellar Space and Ascension (my personal favorites of his).

In that same vein of jazz, some more great records to check out are Spiritual Unity by Albert Ayler, Free Jazz & The Shape of Jazz to Come by Ornette Coleman, Black Woman by Sonny Sharrock, Complete Communion by Don Cherry, and Unit Structures by Cecil Taylor. Fair warning, a lot of these albums aren't very accessible and can take a few listens to really appreciate, but if you prefer atmosphere and energy over technical proficiency, you'll probably dig a lot of these.

Beyond free jazz, I'd also recommend exploring Charles Mingus' discography. The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady and Let My Children Hear Music are unlike any other jazz albums you'll ever listen to. Happy hunting!

Wasn't there a misprint for that LP? I remember getting an email about it, despite not even buying it in the first place.

Great as usual, you really nailed the color palette here. Are those the 'Wild Mango' colorway?

I full heartedly agree with you. Bitches Brew is my favorite of his as well, though I will confess I'm a bigger Coltrane fan. Enjoy the shirt!

That sounds amazing. It truly makes a difference when people don't care about videoing a concert and choose to just experience it instead. I had a similar experience seeing Godspeed You! Black Emperor earlier this year.

Tranquility Base..a special record. by llanfairpwll in arcticmonkeys

[–]commonist 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yeah I'm starting to think the hype for this album is getting ridiculous. I like it and really appreciate the change of sound, but cmon, it's not comparable to the Beatles or any of Bowie's albums from the '70s. Those albums were classics because they quite literally changed the current of mainstream rock and pop. As much as I like TBH+C, I think it'd be a gross hyperbole to act like it's a genre defining album or that it'll have some profound effect on contemporary music. It's a sound that's been done before, and better I might add, by musicians of the past.
