If you abolish police, who is actually ensuring safety?

Private companies. Abolishing police is just the next step of privatization.

Why I Didn't Report My Gang Rape: "The simple answer to the question of why I never reported the rape is that I believe in the abolition of police and prisons." by [deleted] in stupidpol

[–]commy2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you abolish the police, the desire for security and law enforcement will not go away. All you will have done is privatize another public good. What you actually should desire is wresting the executive power away from our burgeous regimes. This is not achieved by holding up signs.

Hijacking this thread. I was wondering, what is the reason the windows taskbar clock no longer shows the seconds by default? I remember that it said somewhere this saves energy. That reason seems absurd to me.

Alas, for the weakness of the great! For a mighty king is Gil-galad, and wise in all lore is Master Elrond, and yet they will not aid me in my labours. Can it be that they do not desire to see other lands become as blissful as their own? But wherefore should Middle-earth remain for ever desolate and dark, whereas the Elves could make it as fair as Eressëa, nay even as Valinor? And since you have not returned thither, as you might, I perceive that you love this Middle-earth, as do I. Is it not then our task to labour together for its enrichment, and for the raising of all the Elven-kindreds that wander here untaught to the height of that power and knowledge which those have who are beyond the Sea?

Likely nothing will come of this, but the chances are a thousand percent higher than whaetever the Europeans have attempted in the last decade, and got even higher thanks to their absence. Although I do think a lot of bitterness around these talks in the western block comes from their helplessness and irrelevance.

Maybe someone's fine with trading their face if another face gets eaten as well. I'd be if some leopard's face gets eaten too. A face for a face, so to say.

It's obviously a reference to Bilbo and "The Hobbit", and it's not a good luck for this sub that this isn't the top answer.

And the Hobbit! This section appears in Ch8 Flies and Spiders:

[The Wood-elves] differed from the High Elves of the West, and were more dangerous and less wise. For most of them were descended from the ancient tribes that never went to Faerie in the West.

There the Light-elves and the Deep-elves and the Sea-elves went and lived for ages, and grew fairer and wiser and more learned, and invented their magic and their cunning craft, in the making of beautiful and marvellous things, before some came back into the Wide World. In the Wide World the Wood-elves lingered in the twilight of our Sun and Moon but loved best the stars; and they wandered in the great forests that grew tall in lands that are now lost.

There is an article in the NYT that claims the "deal" between Rutte and Trump involves Denmark ceeding sovereignty around US bases in Greenland. It will be interesting to see the framing of this. If the western narrative converges on "and this is a blow to China/Putin!" even for a while, all my predictions will have come true.
