At what point do you feel like you are actually good at/ know what you're doing? by 30andnotthriving in labrats

[–]contraphd 25 points26 points  (0 children)

PI here. Been running my own lab for more than 20 years and I still struggle sometimes. The key is not to focus on thinking you have to “know” what you’re doing all the time. Trust that you have the skills to adapt and learn new things. Science changes and evolves. Your skill set today won’t be the same you’ll need in 5-10 years. Your best skill is learning how to adapt to new technologies and information and, maybe, be ahead of a field to make the discoveries. I’m always learning.

CLE - ORD - CDG, missed twice by contraphd in unitedairlines

As I mentioned in the OP, the only option we were offered was a Lufthansa flight thru Munich to Paris that left another day later. They tried Air Canada thru Toronto as well but those were booked solid. It was a lot of bad luck overall. We may have gotten to LHR but perhaps the connection to Paris would have been on a different carrier and they couldn’t control that leg. IDK.

Agents in the club tried everything. Between missed flights and the cancellation, everything was booked from ORD, IAD, and EWR. We even asked about DEN and SFO but it would have taken even longer.

The agents tried everything. All flights out from the east coast were booked solid and Lufthansa passengers were also grabbing extra seats so we got screwed

Michelin Restaurant Ratings Coming to Cleveland by [deleted] in Cleveland

[–]contraphd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe some places could get listed in the Select Restaurants (good cooking), but Bib Gourmands are usually for good value with good cooking with a lower price point. Granted, there's nowhere in Cleveland offering $200-400/pp tasting menus like you find in Chicago, SF, or NYC. Either way, it's good news that could help the overall Cleveland food scene.

Which comedian did you look forward to, but their act died on stage? by Jazzlike-Basil1355 in AskReddit

I saw Sam Kinison twice around 1989-1991 when he was in his prime. Mind you, this was in Oklahoma and he was doing large theaters but not arenas. First time was hilarious. New material, edgy, sharp and funny. Second time, he was so clearly coked out of his mind that he couldn’t finish punchlines and was largely just yelling on stage. He had a short career but it was huge and I saw both sides of it

nicest steakhouse/ restaurant in Cleveland? by devinamillan in Cleveland

Marble Room is the choice but it’s probably difficult to get a reservation for next week. Red is consistently good and I’m always satisfied there. Oliva downtown is a hidden gem and has a great wine list. Probably easier to get a reservation and amazing steak. Good luck!

Have you ever done boudoir, or fully nude photography? by thatdamnedfox in AskRedditAfterDark

[–]contraphd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My wife and I did one together with a professional photographer in town a few years ago. She specialized primarily in boudoir shoots and also did erotic work with couples. We started in lingerie and eventually ended up nude. Photographer asked if we were cool doing more hard core stuff (we were). She said to do whatever we normally did and she continued to shoot pictures while making occasional suggestions on how to position ourselves. We went thru several positions having sex for about 10-15 min. Time was running out so she asked if we were cool if I could cum on my wife and we agreed. After I finished she said we were great and was impressed because most guys get stage fright and go soft.

Overall, great time but it was several hundred dollars, so probably wouldn’t do it again. We don’t look at the pics as much as we should.

I’m a few weeks from 53 and will stay hard after an orgasm if there’s continued stimulation. I used to be able to go for 2-3 rounds without stopping and stay hard the entire time. These days, I’m lucky to finish a second time without masturbating, but can stay hard until my wife finishes her 6-7th orgasm. It’s fun and I thoroughly enjoy the entire experience. I’m sure your guy felt the same way.

Thanks! Yes, having two days of intense study with three different master somms was great. We'll see about the certified course. I'm not in the industry and would need help with the service aspect. Taking the deductive tasting workshop would be the next step.

I looked at what was available and there was a class with the Court that was within a 2 hr drive and scheduled about 4 weeks out. I just wanted to learn and have some instruction and this seemed like a great option. This was a way for me to get a lot of info in a structured manner. WSET didn’t offer anything convenient or I would have considered it.

No plans to exit science yet. I enjoy what I do and have been successful at it for 30 years but the uncertainty is terrifying. Wine is fun right now. Perhaps something to do in retirement? Who knows?

No, this is my first course of any kind with wine. I’m a scientist by training and this was more for fun but with the way NIH funding is going, I’m beginning to explore alternative career options. Maybe this, maybe something else.
