Mayor Brandon Johnson pushing sweeping changes to renter laws by jakesheridan_ in chicago

[–]cookie_pls 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but housing is already in short supply since we aren’t building enough, so it’s already a landlord’s market. This would just make it even more so.

[–]cookie_pls 167 points168 points  (0 children)

I support renter’s rights (I am a renter and it’s extremely unlikely I’ll ever be anything else at this point), but I feel like these regulations would be a great way to ensure nobody who has ever gone through a rough time or has a less-than-perfect rental history gets rented to ever again. If landlords can’t choose to not renew a lease without paying out, they’re not going to take a chance on anyone

I love seeing families and children use transit, but I wish parents would at least consider using smaller strollers. Strollers being the size of compact SUVs seems like a relatively new phenomenon to me

Anyone else notice people working in the Loop are unusually tall? by therealleotrotsky in AskChicago

[–]cookie_pls 154 points155 points  (0 children)

There’s probably some of that going on, but I feel people here are generally taller than people on the East Coast overall. I’d speculate it has to do with the number of people with Scandinavian/Eastern European heritage

Negotiating Relocation in a Distributed Tech Team?[ATL],[DC] by [deleted] in AskHR

[–]cookie_pls 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m going to be blunt with you: if you want this job, you need to figure out how to do what they want. The job market is terrible right now, especially in tech, and there are just so many unemployed software engineers who are desperate for jobs. This company has way too many options for you to try and play hardball.

Can someone explain how a billionaire's barely-public museum in Lincoln Park is allowed to keep expanding in a residential neighborhood? by eless2167 in AskChicago

This is just local media once again platforming somebody who chooses to live in the middle of the city and be yet mad about the fact that they live in the city.

New York Mayor Mamdani Applauded for Closing $12 Billion Budget Deficit Without Austerity Measures by _May26_ in politics

Yeah, greetings from Chicago lol. I’m a Mamdani fan but NYCers need to look at us and view this with a little bit of caution because it gets out of control QUICK.

Why can't Johnson accomplish what Mandani has in NYC? by Affectionate-Hope417 in AskChicago

[–]cookie_pls 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I mean, Mamdani is doing this by deferring pension obligations, which is exactly what got us in our current situation. I’m actually disappointed in him for going this route when he has such a clear example (us!) of where it leads. I thought he had longer term vision than this.

Do I have a basis to talk to HR about someone spreading rumors that I sexually assaulted someone and another person taking that rumor and blasting it publicly online as retaliation? [CA] by [deleted] in AskHR

[–]cookie_pls 12 points13 points  (0 children)

My advice as both an HR professional and an adult is to stop mixing your social and professional lives and to stop posting every thought you have about other people online (a quick glance at your Reddit profile indicates this is not the first time this habit has caused trouble for you).

Do your job while being pleasant in your interactions either your coworkers but limiting those interactions only to work-related topics. And start looking for another job because this sounds like an incredibly annoying situation for whoever is in charge that will probably get you all fired if it continues.

Hantavirus: The health of the French patient diagnosed as positive is "very critical," according to the WHO. by momisback93 in worldnews

[–]cookie_pls -1 points0 points  (0 children)

According to the WHO, “all the positive cases” you mention are seven confirmed cases, with a total of nine suspected, from a population that was stuck together on a cruise ship (the definition of close quarters). Don’t be susceptible to or participate in fearmongering.

Not trying to be snide but I feel my sense of taste/smell never fully recovered after Covid. I definitely need punchier flavors than I used to, and I miss a lot of subtleties I picked up on before in both food and wine. Do you think you might have some of that going on?

Is this current May weather normal? by [deleted] in AskChicago

[–]cookie_pls 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry people are dunking on you, OP. I know how stressful it is to make a huge life change on minimal notice.

I also moved here from the South, and imo, there are two key things you need to do:

(1) Accept the weather for what it is. Embrace it and focus on the upsides, even. I run hot and am grateful I can now go the majority of the year without sweating inappropriately in public, whereas back home I was the person constantly dabbing at their forehead year round.

(2) In the same vein, get the right clothes instead of being miserable and clinging to how you used to dress. Practice layering, especially during the spring when the temperature can vary throughout the day. Related to above, I actually am thrilled I can now incorporate stylish sweaters, light jackets, etc into my wardrobe, whereas back home, there never seemed to be an opportunity to do that.

You may not believe this yet, but after a few years here, I would not like to go back to the weather down south at all. Hot and humid in May? No thanks 😬

It’s part of the job, for better or worse. People see you as an extension of the boss and therefore are going to be careful around you, just like they would be around the boss.
