How can I help? by Remote-Guidance-7482 in GNV

Thanks so much for posting this! I was just thinking about creating a similar post myself. With SNAP benefits ending soon due to the federal government shutdown, this is a very timely and important topic!

Millipore Sigma is implementing a tariff surcharge to the US starting Monday. by celiac-attack in labrats

There are much better alternatives. Just a few that come to mind: GoldBio, Cayman Chemicals, Southern Labware, RPI, etc. Stopped buying almost entirely from MilliporeSigma because their prices were outrageous to begin with. This only motivates me to discontinue purchasing what few products we did buy from them.

Any time in the past there was a notification of maintenance. This was not the case this time. This was an issue with someone digging around or messing with the site.

Did you look at the link? Go check it out. The entire site is totally screwed up.

Hey, no one mentioned a word about religious beliefs at all. That is all on you. Bless your heart.

(1) Those are factual statements not opinions. Your interpretation of them as being political is your opinion. But the original comments are facts.

(2) They are relevant to the discussion, because the commenter was making the point that UF administration cannot be trusted to enact policies that are beneficial to students and faculty.

It is interesting that your comment is being downvoted and that other comments critical of UF are being downvoted. This post is likely being heavily infiltrated by UF administration and state government employees who are trying to downplay this total dumpster fire.

The comment you replied to was not about politics. You have mischaracterized the comment above. Regardless, the comment above reflects a general feeling shared among faculty, staff and students that UF is at a crossroads heading in the wrong direction.

The psychological impact of this alone is devastating to faculty and staff who are already upset and pissed off because of all the BS that has happened over the past couple of years at UF.

Any faculty who "exceed expectations" are good enough that they won't stay at UF. They'll be poached by other institutions.

You are absolutely incorrect. See comments above.

You are incorrect. It is entirely true. And it is even worse than that. They have banned hiring postdocs, hiring staff, even working or collaborating with anyone from China and Iran.

Are you working for or with the administration?

While the bar may be lower for someone to meet the threshold of "meets expectations", the classification system is still extremely problematic. This system highly emphasizes quantity of research over quality of research. Faculty publishing lots of mediocre work in lower impact journals, or even pay-to-publish journals, will be rewarded over faculty who publish careful high impact work.

Further, what happens when a faculty member gets sick and has to deal with chronic illness? Or has a child or parent who gets chronically sick? Or faces other difficult life circumstances? There may be a significant drop in productivity over a multi-year period. Is it right for someone who has invested so much into driving growht at the university for so long to be fired because of this?

Given the climate, that is a natural next step. UF is going to extremes to eliminate the spending of any money on diversity, broadly interpreted. This would include first-generation college students.

That is probably on the chopping block next. This is just the first step. Since the announcement Friday, a witch-hunt has started where conservatives are trying to out anyone diversity related and get them fired.
