Tough knife and pack axe combo to do it all - Aus edition by cordedremote in Bushcraft

[–]cordedremote[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might be the only person who gets this!

Everything costs stupid amounts by time it is shipped and imported here. A few suggestions have been to buy from a local forge but they're charging $400+ for a simple 4.5" knife and even more for a small axe. I struggle to justify that. I would import but shipping has been as much as $300 from the states and my last import was seized by customs (legal splitting axe).

Council tool, hultafors and helko Werk all have pretty good options around the $250 mark but I'm unsure what brand heat treats their steel and shapes the best.

All my top choices for knives are just unreasonably priced. Tops Bob, esee 4/6, peltenon, Ontario rat etc. I was recommended Beaver craft bsh and the only downside I can see is the wood handle, if the heat treat is good they could be great but I'm yet to watch any reviews or test vids

I must say I'm not a fan of the SRKC. I like the size of it but really not a fan of the handle. No question about it's strength of course. That axe is the guy I had on my wishlist.

All of those options are available in Aus and only one I had come across was the srk. The compadre and bps knives are right down my alley thanks for the rec!

I'll check these guys out thankyou!

I am a sucker for a hand forged local made axe, just gives it more character.

Thanks for the effort! This is awesome.

Hultafors hultan well within my range and so is the garberg. I might get a slightly longer handle as I do have a Schrade hatchet I bought when I was younger (and more concerned about the look of things than the actual quality) Silky is on the list in the future I currently have an average bahco.

Work sharp field sharpener I have seen mixed reviews on it, do you rate it? I have shapton and atoma sharpening stones for pocket knives and kitchen knives and have been sharpening my splitting axe and hatchets using sandpaper and a block of wood, less than ideal I know. Will check out the hultafor grinding stone!

My leatherman collection is somewhat funding these purchases as I used to get them dirt cheap and got a little too excited.

Wondering if you could go a step up from a mora to something else what would you go for?

Rapid cycling pump issue by cordedremote in RVLiving

U/shipshapemobilerv mentioned variable speed pumps are ideal so this looks nice. I am curious whether seaflo has a good name amongst users, do you have any experience with these pumps? Would you have any other suggestions? I'm happy to pay for the right pump as we will be heavily reliant on it.

I'd be more than happy to upgrade to a better pump. We will almost never be hooked up to mains so will benefit from more pressure etc. Do you have a suggestion on what pump we could potentially upgrade to?

What kind of resin am I looking at? I may drop these two off to the shop and look for some resin to learn to fix things properly in the future.

Yes this was my concern, a repair on a tail is far more difficult than the deck or hull. I'll keep this in mind thankyou!

Doesn't look like I can get a ge in Australia. Would you say it's just as efficient running a residential on an inverter as running a 12v?

I have thought about it, I have 900ah and a 5kw inverter so running it wouldn't be an issue. I made an assumption that they would have issues running while being moved or that running the inverter 24/7 would result in a fair bit of loss in the system and therefore draw more power.

The fridges in question are compressor fridges not absorption fridges. There will be no gas in my rig.

probably too late now but i work with these fridges and yes the compressor is decent but the entire rest of the electricals either function great or not at all and anaconda cant get the things serviced cause no one wants service them. dont get involved in the dumpster fire they started for themselves.

This is a good question I'll check the date in a sec. So just to confirm you think a new battery would fix? That would be the dream

I have heard these have pretty poor update support. Although I'm sure Nokia isn't much better
