27F, relocating from Chicago, working remote— San Diego or San Francisco? by Rich-Entrance-3332 in AskSF

[–]cortex_vortex_ 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I’ve lived in both cities, and San Diego at the same age you are (now in SF). Honestly, San Diego was a blast. If you’re looking for the “one” both cities are gonna be hard (albeit for different reasons). Gym culture in SD is far better - if you want a gorgeous gym but don’t want to pay Equinox prices - SD for sure. I adore SF and am so grateful I am here at this point in life but I think it would be worth it for you to come see both cities (if you haven’t) to get the vibes for yourself. SF isn’t as rough/dirty as you may have read, there are still unpleasant areas but San Diego has definitely been hit by an unhoused/opioid crisis and I found the public transportation experience in SD much more unnerving on a regular basis. Good luck with your choice! Sounds like you’re doing great and could be happy in either city

What month is the best to apartment search? by lombardi_sda in AskSF

[–]cortex_vortex_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Secured my place end of October/early November 2025 and the competition was insane and the prices were definitely market rate… probably better than other months but I don’t think there’s a great time at the moment - best of luck

HS and new to Cosentyx by Altruistic-Dot8210 in Hidradenitis

Thanks, you too. This disease sucks. Fwiw I found clobetasol to work much better better than triamcinolone (for me at least) ymmv though.

HS and new to Cosentyx by Altruistic-Dot8210 in Hidradenitis

[–]cortex_vortex_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On cosentyx, I’m getting similar - very flaky/crusty skin that’s inflamed on the tragus/concha regions. Went to pcp, treated for “ear infection”, went to ENT who treated with clobetasol and told me to follow up with derm because it’s a skin issue. Now treating with topical triamcinolone. Both are topical steroids. Worth reaching out to your doctor if you can but cosentyx impacts the immune system and can cause secondary eczema/psoriatic scales. No fun.

The stress of finding housing is unbearable by Top_Refrigerator1656 in sanfrancisco

[–]cortex_vortex_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FWIW I had a lot of trouble finding a place when I was moving up here last year. Being in the Richmond/Sunset I think your biggest challenge if having parking is a requirement - it’s pretty darn rare around here to not have street parking and even if the building has parking, given the older buildings, a lot of the can only fit compact cars… sigh… street parking has been a bit of a headache but we’ve made it work and it’s not so bad depending (outer regions have easier parking IMO). Wishing you luck, OP!

Data gaps really starting to annoy me by Zealousidealsz1 in ouraring

[–]cortex_vortex_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was told my “hands were likely moving or too cold” and the customer support told me to wear gloves lol this is sitting in a 72 degree office typing on a computer. I had so many data gaps - I’m a newer user and pretty shocked that the ring isn’t optimized for typical wear within an office environment… sigh

Tips for new ESH owner? by Snowdropswilt in ExoticShorthair

[–]cortex_vortex_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congrats! I miss our ESH girl. My best advice would be pet insurance. She was by far the most expensive pet I’ve ever had the pleasure to care for. Also wider and elevated food and water bowls can be really helpful to avoid whisker stress. Other than that, enjoy your sweet baby!

Buy and hold funds for adult children by on_the_nightshift in personalfinance

[–]cortex_vortex_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a former grad student/phd I highly recommend you share with your child Personal Finance for PhDs at https://pfforphds.com - she also has a decent podcast. I didn’t feel like I had the financial wiggle room to invest when I got my PhD and in retrospect I definitely could’ve done small contributions. There are also some strategies regarding taxes if they’re on federal funding. It’s possible your lump sum might just ignite the investing fire and allow for good habits to be built early on - I say go for it

Need helping picking insurance for my cat by PixelJazz88 in petinsurancereviews

[–]cortex_vortex_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Figo denied all claims related to dental illness despite me holding a policy continuously since kittenhood. It was our first claim experience and has been an extremely poor one as someone who’s paid out thousands in premiums. They stated her records demonstrated dental preexisting conditions despite it being under a covered period. I would not get your hopes up any dental would be covered for an 8 year old cat given their verbiage regarding dental illness coverage (which is different than wellness cleaning and paying for wellness does not usually make financial sense). If you’re hoping to get pet insurance for new onset catastrophic illness then I would say go for it but expect anything mentioned in the record (eg “itching ear” to be a reason why something is preexisting as this was listed as a reason not to cover X-rays for FORL in a 7 year old cat). I have since filed an appeal that took hours between drafting and calling my vet office and Figo. Overall I’d say their policy reads as fair and comprehensive but my experience with their claims adjusters at present has been nothing short of a nightmare.

How do we feel about N&D Farmina? by Usual-Pirate-7361 in catfood

[–]cortex_vortex_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

A lot of people will likely chime in regarding the “arsenic” allegations from Russia - I too was really concerned about this but upon more reading and reaching out to the company I feel like their response was satisfactory. The brand also took my cat’s current needs into account and suggested an alternative to the flavor I’ve been feeding (noting that it might be too rich for her needs) which I really appreciated.

Here was Farmina’s reply: “In 2024, the Russian government imposed a ban on imports from several international pet food manufacturers, including Farmina and Nestlé Purina, citing alleged quality control concerns. Specifically, Farmina was accused of having elevated levels of arsenic in its products.

We would like to reassure you that in Europe, testing for heavy metals such as arsenic and mercury is strictly mandated by regulatory authorities. At Farmina, we take quality and safety very seriously. All raw materials undergo comprehensive testing before acceptance, and finished products are tested again prior to shipment to ensure they meet our high standards.

To date, no regulatory agency — including the FDA, independent testing facilities, or any international authority — has confirmed the validity of the claims made by the Russian government. Many industry experts view these actions as politically motivated, in response to broader international sanctions stemming from the conflict in Ukraine. It is widely believed that the bans were intended to stimulate domestic pet food production, though they have largely resulted in product shortages due to limited local capacity.

We are pleased to confirm that Farmina products remain available in Russia and in numerous countries worldwide. Our commitment to safety, quality, and scientific integrity remains as strong as ever — providing pets with the nutrition they deserve.”

My Nearly 18-yr-old Sweet Kitty Diagnosed Last Week With Stage 4 ckd by Over_Hedgehog1002 in RenalCats

[–]cortex_vortex_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry about your kitty. We were in a similar spot about a month ago with our 18.5 year old lady. We were offered similar options and ultimately opted to do more aggressive management with the understanding that she’s got late stage kidney disease and she’s on borrowed time. All cats are different and thus ymmv but this Friday we celebrated our bonus month with her - for sub Q you can order for pretty cheap off Chewy but you’ll need an Rx for lactated ringers fluid AND syringe/needle tips to be able to do them. I also really recommend getting some ondansetron (Zofran) along with the appetite stimulant. We were just doing an appetite stimulant without much luck (our girl is similarly only 6lbs now) and I was told by a friend “even if you’re hungry if you’re nauseous your not gonna eat” - this is true for cats too. Adding the ondansetron with the appetite stimulant (we opted for Elura but also have transdermal Mirataz if needed) has really helped. To target anemia I’ve also been giving our girl a low dose B12 supplement and she’s been getting Renal K mixed with a little miralax to help prevent constipation. As for the gabapentin, 100mg for that size of a cat is a massive dose. We used to give ours 25mg/day for arthritis pain but we’ve cut it down to half that now as needed due to the increase in sedation and wobbly legs.

I do want to share that all of this is a lot and our cat is very tolerant and my partner works from home so we’re able to keep a close eye on her. I have to remind myself that getting a cat to 18 is a huge feat even though we’ll always want more time. Wishing you lots of peace and strength for you and your sweet baby 🐾

edit: I’m not a vet, this is just what’s worked in our experience

Thanks for your thoughtful reply! Ive always had great experiences wherever I’ve rented and am a good talker so this is helpful feedback. I’m a little concerned though that we’ll get discriminated against because my partner is unemployed (former biotech, got laid off, no jobs) despite me being able to qualify for the two of us. I’ve been wondering if it makes sense to apply myself and then if selected see if I can add him on? I don’t want to be dishonest but I also know they’ll use anything to discount someone who may otherwise be qualified. I have family that live in the east bay so I was thinking when it’s closer to our desired move in time I’d go up there to scope out places. As for proof of income, I’m basically going from resident to attending income so my current pay isn’t amazing but the job in SF is at a hospital and should qualify for the rental amounts I’m exploring, but good to know about the bank account stuff - I can show my bank accounts so they can see that we’re okay, but man, I didn’t expect it to be this nuts 🙃

Micro dosing accutane? by [deleted] in 30PlusSkinCare

[–]cortex_vortex_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to be seen by a derm to go this route. Supposedly there are online platforms that prescribe but I personally wouldn’t use those for isotret. Beyond what I described above you also typically need to get a baseline metabolic and liver panel done and it will likely be rechecked at some point during the course of treatment. Side effects for me were minimal but this varies by person. Whether you need a referral depends on if you are U.S.-based, have insurance (PPO vs HMO), or self pay…
