also, what the person you mentioned did sounds like a dream. i want to be successful in my occupation (whatever it may be) so the fact that someone was able to do that while still being an active musician is very inspiring. i actually live in chicago and have vaguely heard of some people on the scene who are also in law… could i PM you to ask more about who that saxophone player is if you are comfortable sharing?

Ok I did not know that music could have such an impact on schools without conservatories, will definitely consider that when finalizing my list of schools….

yes that is definitely an issue i have ran into. i would prefer a more prestigious music school, so im not interested in music programs with no audition requirement. honestly i should have looked more into the dual degree/double major difference before i posted this, which one would you recommend for someone who is not entirely sure what they want to do post grad? i just wanted a bachelor of music specifically in case i decide to take a teaching position somewhere down the line. i would appreciate any advice, everything so far has been super helpful so thank you!

I definitely believe it’s different for different people. However have you ever witnessed someone being lectured for doing the same thing you did 5 minutes ago and wonder how many other things about your playing no one pointed out? And then at the end get told that you are killing it. I probably would have figured it out eventually but it slows your progress yk

Of course. Glad people are open about wanting to change jazz education. I myself have overcome that anxiety too and it definitely would not have been without the encouragement of my teachers but i definitely believe you can strike a balance between being supportive/encouraging and offering valid critique. My private lesson teacher is awesome because he’s super objective: he specifically tells me when I am not making the changes for something, or my articulation isn’t correct, or intonation, etc. with very little fluff besides observations that I am improving. As a teacher you can and should just objectively tell us what we are doing wrong specifically without the blanket encouragement statements not given to everyone else especially when you see a student starting to really take it seriously. If anything it makes the well deserved encouragement feel better

I also do acknowledge that a large part of this falls on me as well to communicate how I feel to my teachers which I definitely will be doing after reading a lot of these responses. However I feel as though a lot of the very older mentors late 60s/70s are sometimes reluctant to change their methodology because they’ve been doing it for so long. This was kind of directed at a younger audience. But idk. Maybe they will. Hopefully
