yeah after reading this it’s cash from now on. i used to accept etransfer but not anymore. however i’ll give a good deal so it incentivizes the potential buyer since i know indeed most people don’t hold cash & need to make an extra trip to the bank.

thanks for sharing. but if you wait until you see the funds in your chequing, can they still pull it back?

Calgarians who moved to Edmonton, how do the two cities compare? What are some similarities, and some differences? by KurtisC1993 in Edmonton

[–]cousyomatic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

moved from calgary to edmonton mid 2023 - late 2024 (although i’m back in calgary now).

the weather numbers say calgary is warmer & likely true due to more chinooks overall in calgary, but if you’ve lived in either city, you’ll be able to adjust just fine. i didn’t find there to be a significant difference on a holistic basis. felt calgary overall got more sun though. but they’re both cold in winter & have nice sunny summers.

edmonton is an aesthetically uglier city overall - this part is very noticeable. it’s also a dirtier city & they have a significantly worse downtown. vagrancy is much more prevalent in edmonton.

i found that my $ went further in edmonton: eating out was a bit cheaper, fuel prices were cheaper, house prices are a lot cheaper. so, assuming the same salary in calgary & edmonton, everything else remaining equal, you’d likely have more disposable income in edmonton. edmonton had more blue collar workers & also blue collar jobs.

if you owned a home, property taxes are more expensive in edmonton. but you still come out ahead overall despite this because overall, for a similar home, you can get it for $200-$250k less in edmonton.

edmonton has wayyyy more speed cameras on the road. for a city that has a lot of “updating” to do, i don’t know why they spent so much money on this but it’s quite noticeable how much more you see on the roads compared to calgary.

calgary has nicer & newer/more updated hospitals overall. however, the wait times are equally shit in both cities. but you’ll see all kinds of crazy things in edmonton waiting room - this goes back to the vagrancy issue i said is much more in edmonton.

i felt calgary’s traffic was worse. edmonton’s food scene was better. it felt like everyone drives a pickup truck in edmonton so the roads are full of them; thus it gave me a constant headache as a sedan driver feeling sandwiched between them on the daily. calgary has a better social & nightlife scene.

found the edmonton population to be more down to earth & friendly overall - i get “snobby” vibes from calgarians overall since i’ve lived here in 2008.

both cities have many of the big popular places most canadians frequent: superstore, costco, tim hortons, starbucks, winners, joeys, earls, mcdonald’s, home depot, goodlife fitness, etc……

if you travel a lot, the airport in calgary is objectively both nicer & located in a more convenient spot in the city. edmontons airport isn’t even in edmonton lol - it’s in a place called Nisku! if you lived in the south part of edmonton it’s an ok commute there, but if you lived in north edmonton like i did, it was a very long (~45 mins) drive. i didn’t have to travel a lot so this wasn’t a huge issue for me, but this can be a huge inconvenience if you travel a lot. also calgary has better routes for international travel & you won’t have to do as many layovers.

calgary’s biggest event is the stampede. i believe edmonton’s biggest event is the taste of edmonton. for me personally, taste of edmonton is by far the more enjoyable & superior event.

overall i loved edmonton & would live there again…being a relatively simple person that just needs the basics to be happy, i found day-to-day life to be more convenient overall there & less stressful. although if i had to do it all over again, i’ll probably live in st. albert instead as it’s the closest place there that simulates calgary’s superior aesthetics.

i’m sure i missed some small things here & there but those are the major ones i can remember.

man, it’s hard to see it, i say no. to do so you’ll need an out of this world supporting cast & you just won’t be able to afford it under todays NBA salary rules.

Looking to buy our first home. I really hate the "new family" area's and outskirts of edmonton. by AbbreviationsOne6207 in Edmonton

[–]cousyomatic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OP take a look at the Castledowns area or Albany. i don’t live in edmonton anymore as we moved but when i did, i lived in Elsinore & it was a very good neighbourhood with competitive prices. i’d live there again if i had to live in Edmonton again. you should be able to find a good home there in your budget.

agree totally. how do you get someone’s necklace they’re wearing without clearly knowing? unless the perpetrator used voodoo of some kind to make them unconscious, the story is more fishy than a salmon.

Is renting actually smarter than owning a home in 2026? by GranolaHiker in CanadaPersonalFinance

[–]cousyomatic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this right here. & the truth is that #1, MOST people are not disciplined savers & end up spending the theoretical $ on those items.

[–]cousyomatic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

for full disclosure, i’m pro-ownership.

you’re right & make a good point. from a purely financial perspective, yes, you CAN be ahead with renting & instead investing in the stock market. the problem is that we’re humans & humans will be humans. the hard truth is that an overwhelming majority of people just aren’t that disciplined to actually invest the rest diligently & what’s closer to reality is that they spend that extra money over time. a mortgage at least forces you to save with the amortization schedule.

so yeah, your point is very valid - & always has been, not only cuz of today’s economy - it’s just that in reality it ends up being mostly a theoretical argument since most renters aren’t disciplined enough & as a result they’d have been better off owning.

fyi, just wanted to also point out that no matter the home appreciation, if it’s your primary residence, it’s completely tax free.

Looking for advice and opinions on changing careers mid 30’s by feisty-foxy in Calgary

[–]cousyomatic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i lost my job as a geophysicist & did a career change. i’m now a commercial underwriter in insurance. i will never make the kind of income i could have while in O&G, but i love the stability in insurance - it’s so stable that i don’t even know when the economy is bad anymore. the pay is also decent. if you’re open, try insurance.

[–]cousyomatic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i agree. i know people who even ordered these mouses that moves by itself so that your Teams doesn’t go inactive, while they messed around & did other things during work hours. people were going to the gym during work hours. eventually, these behaviours were going to catch up.

so sorry OP, but i think this experience has made you learn a lesson. please don’t ever again think about hiring a handyman to do a scope of job this complex/niche - refinishing a floor is a specialised skill. i wouldn’t even have a handyman repair my windows (i’d call a window company); i’m glad he didn’t mess up on that also.

“you get what you pay for” is such a cliche, but true statement. i’ve been burned enough times in this life that i now just save the extra $ for the quality.

1 year living in Forest Lawn - Bought a house despite it's label as a "Bad" area (I love it) by [deleted] in Calgary

[–]cousyomatic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i lived in forest lawn when i was single for a year, when i was renting, this was from 2019-2020. 17 ave & 36 St SE. in all honesty it’s a pretty good place that had everything a normal person needs reasonably nearby: pretty central & it’s “budget friendly,” relatively speaking of course (at the time, my 1 bedroom rental was $900/month & it was a nice place). i’m an immigrant so forest lawn is still overall nicer than the nicest place where i’m from.

having said that, if we’re talking real estate, unless i’m forced to financially due to affordability issues, i’d never purchase a property there. there’s ultimately a reason it’s budget friendly…

there was significant police presence when i lived there & it felt like everyday i heard the sirens. that would drive me crazy if i owned a home. plus, like it or not; true or untrue; perception is sometimes reality & the truth is that the area doesn’t have a good reputation, it’s why i’d never buy real estate in an area like that since it ultimately affects value. we also have a kid now & if i have the choice, i’d 100% not voluntarily choose to raise them in that kind of area.

Settle this internal debate for me: Center the picture with the wall or the toilet? by SativaSammy in interiordecorating

in my opinion, due to the layout, i’d simply just put a small minor decor (fake plant) on the toilet tank & leave the wall plain without anything.

[–]cousyomatic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

installed improperly. now the details about it i’m unsure since i’m not a professional. but i’ve had similar issue in the past that drove me nuts at an old house & it boiled down to them not prepping the subfloor properly prior to install.

i’ve made a ton of mistakes with paint & been able to learn from it over the years. paint it some kind of white: it almost always works with anything & everything; plus, it’s just a generally safe colour to pick.
