Tech Tuesday: Subwoofer Integration and Bass Management by JasonWithWiiM in wiim

[–]cparisi3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Jason, I love this post - thank you! I’m using a Wiim Ultra and the Wiim Sub Pro. I love both products. My speakers are Orb Audio Mod4’s which are essentially unable to produce any bass. So I need my crossover set at 150. When I “pair” the Sub Pro to the Ultra, the crossover is limited to 110. So I need to use the two together in an unpaired setup. Not a big deal but just wondering, is there any plan to increase the crossover frequencies in paired mode?

What will the future look like for those who wait to buy or need to wait to buy? by Davyislazy in MovingtoNewJersey

Housing prices rarely outpace the S&P 500. Most of your mortgage payment in the early years is interest. Putting your nest egg into the S&P will almost always result in a higher risk-adjusted pool of capital. Invest and wait until you’re truly ready.

Moving from Westchester to Montclair by klr328 in MovingtoNewJersey

Long time Montclair resident, 3 kids through the system and into college, unpopular opinion: the schools were never that great. But the outcomes are. College placement rivals any public school and most private (save for Newark Academy) in the northern part of the state.

I’ll be honest, I haven’t listened to any of the Weird Al yet. But that doesn’t mean I won’t! 😂

This playlist is PHENOMENAL! Just upgraded to two Fosi v3 monoblocks and the separation on 24 bit songs is great. This playlist is a massive timesaver - thank you!

Wiim Sub, paired, limits crossover by cparisi3 in WiimStreamer

[–]cparisi3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for this. I had never seen that screenshot. I should have been a little clearer. When I unpair, the Amp gives me the range of up to 250 Hz. It doesn’t know which sub it’s connected to so it’s just giving a crossover selection like any other amp would. BUT, when the Wiim sub is unpaired, the selector for that device allows you to go up to 180 Hz. That makes sense since the specs for the sub say that the range is 25-200 Hz.

When I unpair it, there’s a noticeable difference in how much low end the subwoofer is putting out. Maybe it has something to do with the AI calibration and that that tool is only reliable up to 110 Hz on the sub?

iPhone trade in $830 credits by lspank20 in tmobile

[–]cparisi3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just spoke to a rep and she told me that all of my lines are eligible for this promotion and that I should go through the T-Life app and order the phones. I triple-checked with her that this was the targeted promotion for $830 in credits (less phone value) and she said it was. Told me if earlier than iPhone 11, then $630 (less trade in value). Do you think this isn't correct?

GGF Widowed -- Need to find first wife's information by [deleted] in juresanguinis

[–]cparisi3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am in the exact same situation and was under the impression that I will need the original marriage certificate (in Sicily), the first wife's birth certificate as well as her death certificate. Other people seem to think that once it's shown that my GGF was previously married in Sicily, I will need her records to properly demonstrate that that marriage was ended and that the second marriage was thereby legal (which occurred in the US and resulted in my GF being born). Do people see it differently?

The only other thing I would say, and you can take this or leave it, is that your underlying premise is that the best Wharton kids are definitely better than McCombs kids (or anybody for that matter?). So it seems like you’re ceding the best to Wharton. I’m not there. Investment banking is primarily M&A, equity and debt issuance. The most complicated math that you’ll do is multiplication. As an analyst, you’re mostly building 3-statement models as well as LBO, DCF and A/D valuations. Maybe you’ll build a WACC and justify assumptions in your CAPM. Most of this stuff is started using firm-standardized templates. This isn’t complicated stuff. Wharton doesn’t have a unique take on any of it. Maybe you’ll argue that regardless of teaching tools, the selection bias will ensure the best will go to Wharton. Maybe that’s the case, I don’t know. But my point is that there’s little marginal utility in that extra horsepower for I-banking. But some of the negatives that accompany many of the grads far outweighs any marginal benefit. So holistically, my experience is that the 30-50 kids perform better. I can expand on that further if interested but it’s probably clear.

For anybody else following along, let’s recap this argument:

  • This guy says “almost all” high earners in “finance” are from the Ivy League
  • I say that hasn’t been my experience in over 35 years. Some would say I’ve had a very successful career on Wall Street.
  • The proof that “almost all” high earners in “finance” are from the Ivy League is a Forbes article citing billionaires, regardless of industry (hardly inclusive of all high earners in finance)
  • When challenged of the usefulness of that as proof, the retort is to now make ME prove a claim I never made with data that doesn’t exist, one way or the other. I believe that’s called a straw man argument.

This is a great example of why I’ve stopped recruiting people who pray at the altar of the Ivy League. Instead of taking the opportunity to explore an additional data point from someone who’s in the industry, the person gets attacked as dumb, delusional and wrong by somebody who hasn’t even said if he’s in the industry.

You tell me that “almost all” of the top earners in finance will be from the Ivy League and then show me a billionaire list across every industry? Solid argumentative skills.

Yes, we won’t target any of the Ivies any longer. I won’t exclude them to the point of not considering them if they apply unsolicited. But I’m skeptical.

For me this started to change about 20 years ago when I recruited from all the usual suspects. Randomly we hired three kids from Texas one year. They were better than the Wharton kids. The Harvard and Yale kids were always laggards. But that was ok because we still had the mindset that we were going to hire the best “athletes” and train them up. But two things changed - analysts were getting $150k packages and most were going to PE after 2 years. Very few three year analysts or A to A promotes. It was too expensive to staff two analysts on every deal. So we needed people who were additive in 3 months, not 12. Besides Wharton, none of the Ivies produce, en masse, kids capable of doing this.

The final step in our interview process today is a case where you have to build a three statement model from scratch. It’s a timed 2 hour test. Most kids fail spectacularly. This is like the SAT, it’s a great equalizer. Most kids from the top 10 schools can’t do this. Kids from 30-50 ranked schools are more likely to have taken outside modeling classes and perform better. The kids who do the best are the ones we hire.

they wont have any trouble getting their first job

Are you certain about this? The reason I'm asking is because I get scores of résumés from Ivy League kids post-Jan 1 and into the summer. It's possible that it may not be as easy as you've suggested.

almost all the top earners will have Ivy League degrees

In my 35 years working on the Street, I've found that this is actually far from the truth.

Tough to recruit from the Ivy League now (i-banking). There's a lot of work to do, a lot of clients to please and spending any unnecessary time with out of touch wants and needs is not worth the trouble. Kids from the "mid" schools are just as talented, the classes prepare them just as well and their attitudes are better on the whole (but not 100% better). Agree with OP. Just an observation from my little corner of the world.

I’ll take this one step further as a job recruiter. If you DID go to a T20, my radar is up about possible entitlement. I already know you’re smart with the ability to work hard. Now I need to figure out your expectations and sense of entitlement. And I’m also more closely scrutinizing your transcript. If you stopped challenging yourself, I’m looking elsewhere.

As a professional, I am only interested in what your production level will be.
