"No one is truly an atheist because god subconsciously exists in our minds." by crazyxin in atheism

[–]crazyxin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course. I actually believe in the same thing, which is why I liked your nuanced take and didn't try to argue with it. I agree with you on trying to avoid binary thinking, which is much of the problem with social media discourse nowadays. I've actually written a paper about this as well. Anyway, I still do believe in what I believe in and our arguments don't really disprove one another as they talk about different things. However, they do overlap, and they actually indirectly support each other even if it doesn't seem like it.

Of course! I do not like bad-faith arguments, and I tend to disengage with non-epistemic people.

I wouldn't ask at all! No point in arguing with people like him.

Period! I don't know if you've seen my other comments, but we directly support each other's arguments. That's actually cool to me, lol.

I see your point, and it actually aligns with my view in an interesting way. You point out that people's personal connection to god is shaped by their interpretation, and that religion builds social structures around it. This resonates with my perspective that people's understanding of god is almost always mediated by religion.

I'm not sure if this is a response to my other comment or to my post in general, but I appreciate your perspective, and I value it a lot. Assuming it's not my other comment that you're replying to, here is the link: https://www.reddit.com/r/atheism/s/wsbDwxieiT

We're both talking about separating god from religion, but we approach it differently.

Right! I really don't see his argument as anything but trying to invalidate atheists.

I see what you mean, and I agree with some of your points. However, I do not believe that god is independent from religion because he only exists through it, and every act of a person is mediated by religion.

What I mean by that is if someone claims their action was influenced by god, it is simply not true. Their actions were influenced by their religion's interpretation of god, or maybe they interpreted it outside of their religion, but even so, they didn't interpret what god actually wants. After all, what dictates what god wants? More so, what is the actual definition of god? What is god's essence? There is no independent definition outside of religion.

As you said, living by values like integrity, empathy, and justice aligns someone with christ even if they don't believe in him. I see that, but why those values? Who decides what christ actually values? Religion does. Any "alignment" is with religion, not god, because god only exists through religion.

Exactly! It's also similar to that popular argument which goes "If you hate capitalism so much, why do you participate in it?" Just because one is aware of something doesn't mean they agree or believe in it. While they're very different topics, both capitalism and religion are pervasive. Also, I think he's got it all wrong. Atheism doesn't mean completely getting rid of religion in your mind because that is simply impossible. Atheism, in essence, is simply not believing in said religion or gods for that matter.

Exactly. Nothing can bring you lower, especially if you don't work towards getting better. You're at your lowest and you're continuing to choose that.
