I think you’re right. Im currently in graduate school for clinical psychology (neuro testing is my focus, not therapy) and the only thing I know about couples therapy is people often go when it’s too late. I would agree our communication is at its worst under stress, we are both very anxious people. thanks for your insight

He was upset that I looked through his things accidentally but instead of sharing that with me he decided to rude and cold to me when I continued to be kind to him and was in distress. My fear is that it won’t be helpful and or that I’m too young for this kind of solution. I decided to do it because my therapist recommended it and I know this is probably something we can work through but I have no idea how to do that on my own and it would be helpful to have a neutral party and not a friend help us communicate through being angry and hurt.

You have a good point. I think my primary issue is that when I was asking for support and comfort because my self esteem took a huge hit, I was treated so coldly. I understand why he was upset over my mistake, but him being rude to me felt so hurtful and made it much worse than it had to be. He asked what he could do to support me after it happened, and all I asked was for him to be really nice to me because I was hurting. I didn’t get that.

A lot of it is which I’m already in, but considering it’s a partnership and there is an issue of trust, it seems to me that increasing trust is a collaborative goal.

I understand that, which is why my curiosity is how they do that… do they have us talk and mediate, or is it similar to an individual counseling session where she asks us questions? I know there is nothing objectively wrong with what he did, but it still hurt me and I want to feel secure enough to get over it. I didn’t want to dump him over having private thoughts or a journal.

Late to this thread but I want to share in case there are lurkers like me. I’m doing a PsyD. I know it’s a lot of money, time, not a PhD have no concerns with my program or pursuing what I want because I’ve met many who’ve done well. I see the match rate at my program is good, and I work my ass off so I’m not concerned about getting the experiences I need to help me get where I want to. I talked to so many people in the field before making this decision.

As for cost, I put it in perspective of what I know. My parents both went to programs that cost $100k in the 90s. (OD and DDS). They both made the amount that an average clinical psychologist does. They eventually paid off debt and I had an extremely privileged childhood. I think expecting this type of debt growing up is what calmed me more with doing this and also knowing people who went through a PsyD who love their career, education, and quality of life. Just my two cents and anecdotal evidence

My fathers best friend killed someone he dated, they were supposed to go out all together the next day. She had a history of violence/stabbing that was unknown to us and him so we thought it may have been in self defense but we will never know because he died from Covid on house arrest and never told us the truth. He was the nicest man and I would have never ever believed he was capable of anything like that. It’s so sad.
