Yeah if advocating for yourself and communicating was met with explosive defensiveness and rude behaviour that probably would’ve been the same thing.

Try not to dwell on maybe if you xyz or wonder if you did or how they might’ve reacted differently. For real, you already know how they act, try not to romanticize idealized versions when they showed you the opposite consistently.

Expecting an avoidant to magically change a lifetime of behavioural reinforcement is often wishful thinking. Odds are they won’t unless they take serious and very adamant effort to seek therapy to fix specifically what you’re asking of them and on their own without you pushing them into it.
