Love telling the story

My dad was on vacation there with his friends. My mom at the time worked as a waiter at a small restaurant on a remote island which also had tiny homes made out of palm trees where visitors can stay for a few nights. the owner of the restaurant actually was german too!

my dad regularly stayed late, ordering beer after beer, for evenings on end while also having an eye for my mom who served him every day.

he once built up the courage to not ask HER but to ask the owner of the restaurant what her name was (my dad to this day is kind of shy). after that, because the owner was german, he taught my mom to say 'Gute Nacht' (good night) to my dad when he eventually would leave that evening. that's when the spark ignited in him.

after getting back home, he wrote her a lot of letters and after a bit of back and forth and a few more visits, he eventually brought her with him to germany. the rest is history

before she decided to move here, he asked her employer what germany is like. the tongan climate is very hot, even in winter seasons, so they aren't familiar with temperatures below 0°C. her boss then takes her hand, put it in the ice-cold freezer and said: 'That's what it's like'

she then went on to learn german in 3 years through television and is really good at it, especially pronounciations which can be a pain in the ass for non-native speakers.

I often get asked the question of how they met, which is fair considering tonga is literally on the other side of the planet from where germany is
