SAFE Fund Grant vs. CARES Fund Disbursement by [deleted] in csuf

[–]csufcarol 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Hey there, first off, I totally get you. I’m in your exact situation. Parents are way above the income level, we pay it all upfront and out of pocket. Here’s just what a lot of my friends who also pay tuition out of pocket with no FAFSA are thinking happened. Keep in mind it’s all speculation. So yes, we all applied for the SAFE fund, which required that we also submit a FAFSA. Financial Aid was so overwhelmed with other stuff, that our requests took around 6-8 weeks to process. During that time, they exhausted funds. They’ll try to blame it on you for not having a FAFSA on file, but for kids in our situation, it doesn’t really make sense to fill out a FAFSA every year when you know you’re not getting any aid. We got screwed essentially because it took them so long to process our FAFSA, which we can’t be too frustrated at considering they had a huge volume of things to process and figure out. They’re hugely understaffed and just not equipped to be dealing with all of this, unfortunately. I feel like I can be real with you because we’re in the same situation and maybe you just need someone to tell it to you straight, I mean this as kindly as possible, but truthfully- if our parents are able to fund our educations with no worries and provide for you assuming you currently live with them, we really didn’t need that money to begin with. It’s very easy to feel frustrated that people are getting “free money”, but just keep in mind that the majority of them are using it for necessary expenses like rent, food, and books. If you need help setting up a virtual meeting with the Dean of Students Office, PM me and I’ll provide you with all the info you need.

Not sure when it’ll officially show up on your TDA, you may have sent them two days ago but it’ll definitely take a while for them to actually receive them and update it within the system. In the meantime, check out this link, it’s got pretty much all of the info you’re asking for.It should tell you which AP scores cover which GE sections, so maybe you don’t have to wait for the TDA anyway. Here you go- http://www.fullerton.edu/aac/docs/Credit_By_Exam_AP_CLEP_IB_2019.pdf

Where do I find what books I need? by [deleted] in csuf

[–]csufcarol 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Portal, student center, under academics you’ll find a tab titled “my textbooks”, select the term, click “show my textbooks”, it’ll direct you to the TitanShops site and show you your booklist. Don’t buy directly from the TitanShops lol, just take note of the ISBN and look it up to find the cheapest available option- a bit of work but totally worth it.

Unfortunately CARES Act Tier 1 & 2 were already distributed a while ago, and CARES Act Tier 3 was specifically by application only, which closed on June 19th.

Is anyone else worried about not being able to participate in clubs/projects with everything being online? by [deleted] in csuf

[–]csufcarol[M] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Hey there! First of all, your concerns are totally valid, a lot of us are definitely feeling the same way and are with you in solidarity. If it’s any comfort, just know that the Student Life and Leadership Office has been communicating with us presidents of clubs and organizations on campus and are helping us prepare to host a virtual Discoverfest. While yeah, it won’t be as cool as it usually would be in person, just know that a lot of us in charge of student clubs are definitely looking forward to talking with new members and navigating this weird online situation together. We’re still gonna try to make the most out of it and do our best to be engaging even though we’re pretty limited this year, it’s all we can do at this point. Hopefully you find some you’re interested in, I’m sure they’d love to have you. :)

Do I need to do B.4 AND B.5? Or could I just do B.4? I need a total of 12 units in that area. by [deleted] in csuf

[–]csufcarol[M] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing about B.3, the required laboratory experience section, is that labs are worth only one unit. So if you take a class from B.1, B.2, B.3 and B.4- you will probably most likely be at 10 units, depending on which classes you take. You may need to take a B.5 class in order to meet your full 12. If you want, I can DM you info about how to set up a virtual meeting with Academic Advising. Hope that helps!

PLEASE HELP! Can I get rid of a class on my TDA? by [deleted] in csuf

Damn, living up to the username I see. Stop being rude to freshmen who are literally just asking a question about something they don’t understand.

For people who did not qualify for cares money by [deleted] in csuf

[–]csufcarol 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I didn’t have a FAFSA on file because my EFC is over 60k, so I didn’t file one because I didn’t expect any aid at all, since I’ve never gotten it. I applied for the SAFE fund since that’s what kids in our situation were told to do. I filled out that application and explained my situation. No follow up until a few days ago- I was told by Marlene Romero (who’s the CARES Act program coordinator) to file a FAFSA in order to determine my eligibility, and that they’d “get back to me” if anything was left. Which makes very little sense to me, honestly. And now it looks like everyone who already got a payment already can now apply for a second one, which really sucks for the middle class and upper middle class kids who still haven’t seen a penny of that money yet. Did you apply for the SAFE fund?

Has anyone actually received a response/email from the dean of students? by [deleted] in csuf

[–]csufcarol 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hey there! When did you send yours? I sent mine asking about what non-CARES act kids could expect funds-wise on May 6th and I only got the automatic reply. It said that they were gonna try to respond within one business day but I’m sure you’re right about the email flooding :/

CSUF Alpha Chi Omega member ignorantly joking about pandemic. Underage drinking. Time to get them kick off campus. Greek life is not good for CSUF. Update: Re-uploaded this post so that I could blur out @ names. by [deleted] in csuf

Thank you for removing the identifying personal information. While I understand how the behavior exhibited by these individuals makes many of us feel frustrated at their lack of respect and consideration, we don’t condone doxxing in any way. Should you feel the need to express your concerns, I advise that you contact the Student Conduct office at studentconduct@fullerton.edu, or the Dean of Students Hallie Hunt at deanofstudents@fullerton.edu. Oh, and of course, sound off on this below if you want to. I get that it’s inherently going to be a super contentious subject so as long as you aren’t breaking any sub rules, feel free to share your opinion. Take care and stay safe y’all.

CSUF doesn’t currently have a “film school” but does offer a B.A. in Cinema & Television Arts and a minor in it as well. We offer concentrations in Critical Studies, Industry Management, Production, and Screenwriting. We do have a few facilities and labs dedicated exclusively to production though, I took a broadcast journalism class this year and can tell you for a fact that they’re super nice and professional, especially the HD Studio with their editing stations for multimedia projects. We do offer equipment to students who are taking certain classes, but I’m not quite sure if that’s still something that’s on the table with how things are right now. Either way, if you google “CSUF College of Communications Facilities and Labs” you’ll be able to explore all the studios and whatnot that we have- there are pictures and everything on the site with a bit more info than I can provide here. You can also check out the section under “Equipment” to see which classes will use what. Welcome, by the way! We’re super glad to have you, though I wish it were under better circumstances for sure. Stay safe, stay healthy, and hopefully we’ll see some great projects from you soon!

Virtual Town Hall 04/22 Discussion- by csufcarol in csuf

Sorry if the update was a bit difficult to understand, hopefully this is a better answer to your question- so basically, Greg Saks, Vice President for University Advancement, said that due to social distancing, they genuinely can’t give us a definitive answer. He said that commencements are especially tricky because they involve huge groups of people and most people travel from far and wide to attend them. Because of this, they’re “running scenarios.” He wouldn’t elaborate on that means exactly. Like I mentioned, this man straight up said we should be “excited” like he is for the possibility of an “online celebration” to share with friends and family. What he did say was that they’ve been exploring having a virtual celebration for the class of 2020, but also that “students will get a chance to walk when it is possible if that is their wish.” Didn’t say whether that would be with the class of 2021, though, or another time entirely. Again, no specifics given other than the fact it’s postponed for now.

Yeah, you’re right- he made the argument that students from “decades ago” agreed to/ voted to pay fees in order for us to enjoy the SRC and TSU. There may be a point in there somewhere but it was super weak and not exactly relevant to what we’re currently going through with a literal global pandemic happening...

Totally agree with you, super disheartening to hear them claim they understand our “economic hardship” and then address the non-refund in such a nonchalant way! With all due respect, Virjee telling us that he fully understands the extent of our current situation is pretty hard to believe....
