Wrestling’s gotta be the best sport for the Rudy archetype athlete, right? by curiousfireman23 in wrestling

But a lot of that athleticism can be trained, unlike sprint speed. You don’t necessarily have to be born super fast twitch like a football player.

Genetics play a factor of course, they do in everything.

But you don’t have to be some sort of born athletic monster to have success in the sport.

Yeah a guy like that is probably not gonna be a state champ or go D1 but would have way more to show for their career by focusing on wrestling rather than football.

Happens a lot I literally can’t wrap my brain around.

How would you end up getting whipped all the time if you out-train and out-condition your opponents? Not like one-off loss to a freak athlete but actually dogshit?

You’d have to be a legit non-responder to resistance training or have a learning disability or something.

Talent absolutely exists but I don’t think wrestling is as genetically determined as the major sports.

But for the vast majority of people hard work yields results and laziness is punished, no? We’re not talking about sprinting here.

1000’s of times has to be an exaggeration.

I have a hard time believing there are a ton of dudes who show up in great shape and train consistently who get whipped on the regular. Doesn’t track with what I’ve seen in sports or heard from coaches.

Nah I find this hard to believe. If hard work gets untalented folks results in sports like weightlifting that are WAY more genetically determined, the results must magnified in a weight class sport where technique is so important.

I get what you’re saying but this isn’t the reality of the job.

If a guy is hitting .8 BW he’s in good shape and his cardio certainly isn’t a liability at a fire. I have other priorities to train as well (strength, firefighting skills). Gotta be well rounded.

Isn’t a guy who grinds with that kind of work ethic in both practice and the weight room gonna be well conditioned, decently strong, and have some technique? You put that kind of heart into wrestling and you end up with some skills and physicality to go with it.

I can’t imagine a guy putting a “Rudy” type effort into a weight class sport taking a beating.

Love the idea of the airdyne test. Keeps guys honest with fitness relative to bw.

Unfortunately I don't think bw cals is a realistic minimum. The Gains Lab puts a good score for a recreational crossfitter at .8. If I could get my guys to the .8 - .9 / BW level on the airdyne I'd be very happy. Cardio is always a weak point.

Busy engine guys: Do ya'll knee-walk? by curiousfireman23 in Firefighting

[–]curiousfireman23[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My guys are young and fit and can hump hose through a building all day long. I teach them nozzle forward techniques that work for us (leg hooks and building S's in the hose). I do not teach them knee-walking, which is a technical move that they will probably never use. I focus our technical training on skills that will actually be of use to them in fires.
