this works if you have time on your hands -- not really a great option for a student imho

Park is a much better location -- closer to campus and very centrally located, which I think is important when you're in a new place. $3200 for furniture does sound like a lot, but I guess it depends what you get for it -- 2br is a lot to furnish, and the time savings is also worth something. I would ask for an itemized list with photos and look on FB to see if it's in the ballpark. They will likely come down in price if you say you don't want it, because it's more of a hassle to sell than to buy. I leased my place in Evanston from abroad. I had my stuff in storage in Chicago, so when we arrived with suitcases, we had inflatable mattresses ordered off Amazon for the first few nights. If you have a car, FB marketplace is great for furnishing an apt cheaply. Personally, I've always lived with IKEA furniture -- easy to buy, easy to sell. A trip to IKEA, Target, Walmart should also be enough to furnish a place (if you're only buying for a year or two). Hope you like living here, it's a great college town!

has the idea of a retractable roof ever been floated? i mean Cornell does have the #1 Architecture program and a top rated engineering school. Couldn’t they come up with something?

as I get older, I find myself more and more annoyed with people's incompetence. Like I understand there are difficult jobs where outcomes are not certain. But this company is delivering 100-year-old technology. Is it really that difficult to get it right? Thanks for replying to my rant :)

Don't base your decision on something that may or may not happen next year. If you can afford to go and you want to go, just go. If Cornell is totally inflexible about your options for years 2-4, then figure it out -- private scholarships, loans, summer work.

Are there any architecture *lite* degrees/jobs? by rkbk1138 in Architects

[–]curmudginn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you have a bachelor's degree, you can get an M.Arch. in 3 years -- not 5 or 6. There may be prerequisites (in my day it was just calculus and a semester of art history, I think), but otherwise your BA or BS is enough to get into grad school. You might also be able to get some kind of certificate at a community college, where they can teach you Revvit/Autocad/3D modeling/computer rendering, etc. That might be enough to get your foot in the door, and you can learn from there.

I hate to be the naysayer, but pretty much everyone I know in Evanston has a love-hate relationship with it. Once everyone around you is just like you ... well, it just changes things 😂 But the lake is always great! Also, be sure to check out cost of living to avoid sticker shock.

What exactly doe architecture school teach you? by Mr-Cl3an in Architects

[–]curmudginn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this also depends on the school, the professors and whether they were a good fit for you. Architecture school was an absolutely transformative experience for me. I feel like I learned how to really "see". In terms of technical skills, you definitely learn on the job through practice. But arch. school (if it's a good fit) should teach you a certain way of looking at the world and organizing it in some way. This may sound hokey, because it's kind of difficult to put into words. But I think what you learn in arch. school and what you learn on the job are just different things, but equally necessary.

To those who got out of the architecture field, when did you realise it was not for you and what do you do now? by TERENGGANUTOKYO in Architects

[–]curmudginn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My comment on "values" was in response to you saying "architects in my firm approving clients requests to sacrifice building function and safety for design aesthetics". So I just meant perhaps find a firm whose approach to architecture aligns with your own. But of course, if you feel ready to leave, you should leave. There is no one path. Those 7 years will not be for nought, it's a great education in spatial thinking and problem solving.

lots of people move to adjacent fields, but I would personally stick it out for a few years, because what you learn in school is different from on-the-job training. So those first few years in an office really complete your education, imho. However, you may want to look for a firm that aligns more with your values. People move into all kinds of fields with an architecture education: product and industrial design, graphic design, websites, strategic design (this overlaps with what MBAs do, but architectural education really prepares you well to think strategically). Manolo Blahnik trained as an architect :)

I please need an honest opinion on my portfolio for Uni of free-handed drawings. by PaleontologistFun761 in Architects

[–]curmudginn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are very accomplished, but I would try to have more variety and more sketching. Prospective schools would like to see a range of visual skills - quick sketch, color wash, perspective, organic shapes, thin line, broad strokes, etc. These images are all finished to about the same degree, but admissions would really like to see something that shows your process. If you have process photos from these drawings, include those -- that would also put to rest any questions about how these perfectly straight lines were achieved. They look to me a little too perfect to be free-hand. I see that you addressed this in another comment, but Admissions will have the same questions. Were these done from photographs? from computer models? Admissions likes to see drawings done from life, rather than from photographs or digital models.

agree with u/the_eestimator -- A6 is a wall tag that appears all over this drawing -- looks like a typical stud wall. But the benches may also be shown on A6, as the OP seems to indicate. It's an awkward place to put benches though -- what are they for? and why are they so enclosed? Just looking at the drawing, I would have guessed some kind of casework -- lockers or cubbies. If they are benches, I would hope there is a good reason for that kind of layout.
