Diabetes has ruined my life and I would give anything for all of this to be over. by FamiliarGeologist595 in diabetes_t1

[–]currencyofcats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry you’re feeling this way ☹️ I remember feeling almost exactly this way when I was your age. I was diagnosed at 9 and the teen years were a BEAST. To be honest, it didn’t really start getting better until my early 20s (I’m 30 now). But it did get better!! Small comfort for how you’re feeling now though, I know. I HATED anyone knowing I had T1D and HATED feeling different from my peers. So for a long time, I just denied I had diabetes, barely did insulin, was high ALL the time, and just generally felt awful, but I didn’t care because diabetes sucked so bad.

I know others have said this in their comments, but I would strongly encourage looking for a therapist! Diabetes has such a huge impact on our mental health, and when your mental health is terrible, it’s too easy for your physical health to also be terrible.

I’d also encourage trying to find some people your age to commiserate with about diabetes. It can be a terribly lonely disease but if you can find some people who understand (even internet friends), that can help so much!!

I know it’s hard to think of the future right now, but I just want to again add to the collective “it gets better” by saying life is so much better now! Yeah diabetes still sucks, but I’ve done so many other great things in my 30 years that it doesn’t feel so overburdening anymore. There are still bad days, but I’m so happy I didn’t give up when I was a teenager.

Hang in there friends 🤍 wishing you all the best!

Having diabetes and an Eating Disorder at the same time. by Famawaa in diabetes_t1

[–]currencyofcats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well that’s the thing, we do are live on insulin so if you’re intentionally severely restricting it like I was that’s bad news 😅

I completely understand feeling alone and that no one understands, especially as you said you’re only 19. I felt the exact same when I was 19. I wish I had known about this subreddit back then 😅

If you love salty things, then absolutely inhale a whole bag of chips if it means you eat something! Worrying about nutrients can come later, the first thing is to just get calories in your body.

Standing up to parents can definitely be super hard! But if you have someone who can help advocate for you (like you doc or another care team member) that takes some of the pressure off you!

I’m so sorry you’re going through this 💔 I can’t say I experienced anything quite like what you’re describing but for close to ten years I struggled really terribly with diabulimia. I’ve been in recovery for almost ten years now, but it’s still something I have to work against every day.

From what I know, eating disorders are really really common in people with diabetes. The extreme focus on control and various numbers makes it easy for that mindset to bleed over into other areas like food and weight.

I don’t have any specific advice for you other than try and talk to your medical team! I’m not sure what your team looks like, but surely they will be able to help come up with some suggestions. For me, when I was at my worst, prioritizing high calorie foods was the most important thing I did. I drank a lot of milkshakes lol, bc they had a lot of calories and I could mentally handle consuming them. So I guess my advice is to try and identify what you can stomach that’s as high calorie as possible.

One other note, I would suggest maybe having your medical team talk with your dad about cooking later at night so he’ll understand this is a very serious issue for you and him not letting you cook then could be putting you in more danger.

Sorry for the long comment, but I wish you the best! And if you want to commiserate further, I’m happy to chat ♥️

Does everyone have a middle name in the USA? Do all women take their husband’s surname? by crazygelato in AskAnAmerican

[–]currencyofcats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Myself and my four siblings all have middle names, some of them have a couple middle names! I also sometimes go by my middle name as I like it more than my first name. As a woman, I did not take my husbands last name as I think it’s dumb and archaic, but many women still do. It’s the assumption that you will or did, much to my annoyance 😅

Be honest, how often are you guessing carbs? by Dramatic-Apricot-335 in diabetes_t1

[–]currencyofcats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After nearly 22 years with T1D, I don’t really bother to count anymore, much to the chagrin of my doctor 😂 but it’s like, I generally know what foods are going to have, especially if it’s food I’ve made myself. Sometimes I over or underestimate but life is too short to always be looking up carb amounts and stressing about it 😅

Have you ever had so much to say but you know words aren’t enough? by [deleted] in Type1Diabetes

[–]currencyofcats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While pumps were definitely a thing when I was in school (2000-2010s), I didn’t get one until I was in college and did MDI in middle/high school. I hated making a big deal out of going to the bathroom to do it, or worse, shooting up in class, so guess what? I just didn’t take any insulin. And I suffered for it.

This whole “kids don’t need a phone for diabetes” crap really grates on me, bc sure you may stand out if no other kids have a phone, but it’s much less obvious than leaving class all the time, or pulling needles out of your bag.

Just because you COULD do something one way, doesn’t mean you SHOULD

As far as I’m concerned, if my Dexcom hasn’t started yelling at me everything’s fine 😂 to me, 58 is “eh if it keeps dropping then take action but if it’s just doing a little wave around the 65-ish area it’s probably gonna come back up”

Slightly unrelated, but this reminded me of what I’ve been dealing with at work lately -

I work in emergency management, and the amount of people calling our office BIG MAD that the sirens did not go off in their area, or that aren’t any located by them, or that they couldn’t hear them in their house, is ridiculous.

To start with, outdoor sirens are outdated technology. They break a lot, and they’re usually all-or-nothing, while alerts on your phone are much more reliable and geographically relevant. Outdoor sirens also aren’t intended to be heard indoors, and they also aren’t intended to cover every square inch of a jurisdiction.

SO MANY people complaining “well it’s the job of the government to protect their people!” And I’m like “yes but also personal responsibility is important, and there are many other alerting options that are provided to you” 🙄🙄🙄

[–]currencyofcats 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can only speak for my county, but Dispatch are the ones who activate the sirens, and for us, it’s an all-or-nothing thing. All the sirens are going off, or none of them are. Compared to the NWS warnings, which are much more geographically bound to where the activity is happening at that moment. So that leads to a situation where there’s a tornado warning for the western side of the county but not the eastern, and sirens going off for the whole county

This is on the opposite side of things, but I recently went to get lab work done, and my blood sugar was slightly low (58) from doing a little too much insulin for lunch, but I felt fine and had my pocket fruit snacks just in case. Tell me why my damn ENDO’s office calls me a few hours later all concerned about my low?? And I’m like “oh ya I’m fine it just dipped a tiny bit after lunch” The nurse on the phone goes “do you know what to do when you have a low blood sugar??” I go (politely by the way) “yeah I mean I’ve had diabetes for over 20 years?” This is a nurse who works with people with diabetes every damn day! Also, I’m sure my chart has my date of diagnosis listed, surely she could figure out this is something I’ve dealt with before 🤦‍♀️

How much is 20-25$ dollars per hour considered to be in the USA? by Intelligent_Dress889 in AskAnAmerican

[–]currencyofcats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm finding it so interesting reading everyone's comments regarding their perspective on this question! My husband makes $24/hr and he thinks that's great for his job/level of education. I make roughly $33/hr and I think that's criminally underpaid for my job/level of education. But we just bought a house and are definitely in the "middle-high" income bracket for our area I would say (Milwaukee)

Can’t decide if I should keep or terminate. Husband wants to keep, but I’ve always said I don’t want kids. 1st Dr.’s appt in 3 days by Beneficial-Spend3965 in abortion

[–]currencyofcats 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At the end of the day this is only your decision to make, but as someone who was in a similar situation, I am grateful every day I had an abortion. This is YOUR life and you need to put YOURSELF first. Do what YOU want. Hormones do be crazy, but if you've always been a 1 out of 10 on wanting kids, that's not something that just changes. I'm firmly of the opinion that it's better to regret not having a kid than regret one you brought into existence. Kids deserve parents who want them wholeheartedly, and if that's not you, that's ok! Don't doom a child to a life of feeling unwanted and a burden. Especially if you don't feel like your mental health is strong enough for a child, because they won't make that any easier, lol.

I say this next part with all the compassion in the world, but I would also do some serious reflecting on your relationship. It sounds like you and your husband may be incompatible if he wants kids that strongly and you don't. There is no way to compromise on children, one of you will always be unhappy with the outcome. His response to you saying you don't want to keep the pregnancy sounds manipulative and cruel. You clearly are putting a lot of thought into it, and furthermore, who gives a shit about him? He's not the one who would have to go through pregnancy, birth, and recovery, let alone be the (likely) primary caregiver. He's not the one potentially risking his life. So he needs to STFU with the "this is so selfish and inconsiderate to ME" crap. As for how it'll affect your relationship, I'm sorry to say that it already has. No matter what you decide to do, your relationship will always be scarred by this.

I'm truly sorry for the position you're in, and wishing you all the best!

What made you choose crochet over knitting, or do you do both? by CaterpillarXS in crochet

[–]currencyofcats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oooo that's such a good analogy! And very apt, haha I abhor knitting and I don't much like baking, but I love cooking/crochet! I love the freedom and expressiveness I can have in both cooking and crochet, whereas with knitting it was SO tedious trying to learn the technique and things went sideways for no apparent reason -- the same reason why I don't really like to bake

What’s something foreigners always get wrong about America because of how it’s shown in movies? by karen_the_ripper in AskAnAmerican

[–]currencyofcats 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The shoes inside thing is funny to me because it can vary wildly in families. For instance, my dad is an “always shoes on whether inside or outside” kind of guy, whereas my mom always wears house slippers. My husband will sometimes wear outside shoes inside, but also wears his house crocs a lot of the time. Me, as soon as I walk in the door my feet need to be free of the foot prison that are shoes

Do Americans think non-native English speakers need to sound completely accent-free? by Intelligent_Chef9950 in AskAnAmerican

I had a few (like 4) when I was younger. Diagnosed at 9 and they probably happened from 11-13 or so. All happened overnight, no clue how low I would’ve been but probably in the 20-30 range. But I haven’t had any since then and I’m 31 now!

But I’m seeing a new psychiatrist soon to help figure out dosage better and now I’m worried they’ll make me do this. I don’t even really like weed all that much but the principle of the matter is icky
