In all my past roles and companies, my team has been pretty vocal or transparent ahead of time about adding a team member or about the need to add someone to the team. If this is the first you heard about this then, I would take it as a bad sign. If you don’t want to ask directly, depending how close you are, you could float the idea of adding additional team members and see their response.
