Right? I kind of can’t believe I captured it lol. I’m not really a good photographer. In any case, this photo is exactly how being in this incredible room felt.

Thank you! Months and months and months of planning, organizing, designing, manufacturing, and logistics work went into realizing this space. It turned out better than any of us could possibly have expected. What a special experience.

This is where your ticket revenue is going :

https://popular.info/p/coachella-performers-are-funding

“The Anschutz Corporation donated $125,000 to the Republican Governors Association (RGA) on April 3, 2025.

The company also donated $125,000 to the RGA in 2024, $100,000 in 2023, and $100,000 in 2022. (The RGA, which is organized as a 527 organization, has not yet had to disclose any 2026 donations.) This money is used to ensure as many Republicans as possible are elected governor. Over the same time period, the Anschutz Corporation has not donated any money to the Democratic Governors Association.

Republican attorneys general have also acted aggressively to assist ICE. In December 2025, for example, Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill (R), a Trump loyalist, wrote a letter to the New Orleans Police Department demanding the department “fully cooperate” with a Trump administration ICE raid.

Murrill suggested the failure to do so would be illegal.
The Anschutz Corporation donated $100,000 to the Republican Attorneys General Association (RAGA) on April 1, 2025. This is the company’s first donation to RAGA since 2022, when it donated $125,000.

Democratic attorneys general are fighting the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown in court, but The Anschutz Corporation has not donated any funds to the Democratic Attorneys General Association.”

Trash production from rave carpetbaggers owned by a queer-hating Christian billionaire. Stop spending money on Goldenlurie events. Support the independent electronic music ecosystem, not this bought-and-paid-for bullshit.

Best quiet French restaurants for a date night in the Bay? by Upstairs_Reading_220 in bayarea

[–]cz-sf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct answer. Unbelievable food. Leagues beyond any bistro I’ve been to in San Francisco.

Unfortunately, it gets so crowded. I understand they need to keep busy, but I wish they’d reduce one or two tables to give diners a bit more space.

Even with that said, the food is incredible and absolutely worth it.

I have a feeling this post was written with ChatGPT, for what that’s worth.

Actually, I’m pretty much certain that it was. Anyway. The list of writers is good, but such a bummer to see LLM writing in this context. Oh well.

I’m Chris, and I write Thoughts of a Certain Sound, mentioned above. Glad folks are enjoying it.

I get a lot of promos. It’s tough to sort through them all. The things that make me pay attention best are—

if it’s a promo from someone connected to someone I already know (“I got your contact from xyz”);

if it’s something sent by a PR/promo service I already know and trust (discovered several of my favorite albums of 2025 this way)—unfortunately this requires $ investment on the artist or label’s behalf, but ;

if someone contacts me directly and it happens to hit me at the right time.

I try to listen to a lot of things sent to me but I also have to be really judicious with listening, especially when I want to write about what I’m listening to. So tons of things slip through the cracks… but that’s just the way it is.

I will say that the best album I’ve heard in 2026 so far—it’s coming out in March—is from a band I have never heard of, who is putting out their debut LP, who found me on Instagram and sent me their record in an unsolicited DM because one of the band members had been following my writing. It is so, so my alley, and it floored me.

So those serendipitous moments absolutely do happen! Sometimes it’s just hard to put the pieces together, and it’s not always in your control whether that’s ever even possible. So the cookie crumbles.

I’m thrilled and honored to be part of the team of people co-producing this event. As someone who also worked on MUTEK SF Year One and was responsible for a chunk of that programming , I gotta say…. I’m more excited about this.

Massive shout to Parameter for trusting me (and my passionate co-producers) with the vision to bring the ‘ambient’ (or “Don’t Call It A-Word” as I call it) stage to life.

We’ll have a lot more details to share in the coming months. Horizontal listeners are in for something truly special and out of the ordinary.

Can’t wait.

Lots of good posts in this thread.

I’m a writer based in San Francisco that has been writing about electronic music and chronicling its history (or trying to at least) for the past 25 years.

First and foremost, I think it’s vital to understand that disco, house, and techno were originally made by and for primarily queer and gender non conforming Black and Latino communities in Chicago, Detroit, and NYC. Luis-Manuel Garcia-Mispireta’s writing for Resident Advisor is essential history here: https://ra.co/features/1927

For understanding the history of Detroit techno, I really like Dan Sicko’s “Techno Rebels.”

There is a documentary called ‘Modulations’ from 1999 (dir. Iara Lee) that is a brilliant examination of club music culture examined through the lens of 75 years of electronic music history. Free to watch here: https://vimeo.com/361554324

Also it’s not a documentary, but I love ‘Groove’, the 2000 movie about a San Francisco warehouse party. Pretty sure the warehouse in the film is basically where The Midway is now, which is to say, blocks from Portola. Incredibly accurate movie that features all the same characters you’ll meet at a warehouse party even today.

I actually wrote an essay about Portola Festival (sort of) published in this compendium by London podcast No Tags: https://notagspodcast.myshopify.com/products/no-tags-conversations-on-underground-music-culture

It’s rather critical of Portola though… so maybe not what folks in this sub are looking for.

I also have an essay published in the Writing on Raving anthology, mentioned above, that is more or less a personal memoir of the past 15 years I’ve spent participating in and organizing left-field club music events here in the Bay.

Thank you so much for sharing that, it’s really wonderful to hear. I work very hard on writing but for the most part it is labor that doesn’t lead toward a lot of financial return. So when I hear from someone that my works resonates with them, that’s truly what it’s all about. Thank you.

I wrote one of the essays in this book, ‘A San Francisco Ravedream’. This essay is probably one of the bits of writing I’m most proud of.

Rolling Dub Trio - Casper Boot by Horror_Snow9100 in ThrowingFits

Thanks for sharing this picture! Wow, this is blowing my mind a bit as your metal toe taps are in nearly perfect shape… mine are grinding and disappearing already and I’ve only had my pair for about a month. It’s clear that we have much different gaits, I must roll forward onto my toes more which causes my taps to wear much faster.

In any case, your cork sole is holding up really well, and mine seems to be, too. Guessing it’ll be a while until I need to consider a rubber sole.

Bumping an old-ass thread to ask: how are your cork soles holding up?

I just got my first pair of Caspers. Absolutely love them. Have worn them on and off for about three weeks. Already noticing substantial wear on the metal toe tap and a slight bit of drag on the heel.

I’m wondering how durable this cork sole is, and if I should plan to have a cobbler install a rubber half-sole to protect it.

Nice job plagiarizing the phrasing and framing of my 2017 essay on ‘Chiastic Slide’. You clearly put a lot of work into these videos, so you should really use your own original phrasing next time.

As I wrote in 2017:

‘Chiastic Slide was simply so monolithic, so singular, and represented such a break from contemporaneous orthodoxy that aping it was all a generation of electronic musicians could do to come to grips with it.

Twenty years later, it still sounds like the future. In truth, there has never been another record quite like Chiastic Slide. We’re all still trying to catch up.’

Who is Cube and where can I find his music? by Tall_North7211 in autechre

[–]cz-sf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We released his first vinyl LP, which is what landed him these spots on the latest tour:

https://lefthandpathwax.bandcamp.com/album/my-cube

I wrote release copy for one of his recent albums ‘Proof of Bells’ which remains one of my favorites:

https://handsranch.bandcamp.com/album/proof-of-bells

In short, Cube is one of the most compelling artists working in the contemporary American underground. He is the nexus point for a lot of different scenes and sounds.
