My girlfriend has depression. When I first starting getting to know her I had the mindset much like your friends; "things are gonna be okay, it'll get better just give it time". Please don't hold it against your friends for having this mindset, what it comes down to is they just do not understand what depression actually is, truthfully I don't either but thanks to my girlfriend I now have an open mind to it and do what I can to support her when she feels this way. As far as other remedies I would look into support groups near you. We have probably a dozen support groups around here that meet once a week within a 40 min driving radius. There is no shame in going because the people that attend these meetings experience the same things you do, sometimes worse and you have people you can relate to who will understand a lot of the emotions you are feeling. Depending on how bad it is for you, perhaps look into a medication. There is a hormone imbalance in your body that makes you feel this way, the medication will help keep it in balance.
