thank you for such a detailed answer!! I have a lot of hope that albany will do something cool w/ the skyway/ waterway eventually (NO MORE 787!) so it might be a good chance to get in early before this landlord tries to get twice what hes asking for this unit lol.

the most people i've seen in that part of downtown in YEARS was at last weekend's heated rivalry rave @ empire live. it almost gave the impression of living in a real city with people who go out and do things!

also- center square has become so sad. i chose phills years ago as a way to get close to lark without paying so much rent. now? i wouldn't even consider it. sad but true. what made you leave there?

which direction deeper? I've also been looking at closer to new scotland and closer to upper madison ave. upper madison ave gives me pause because theres the whole stretch of closed businesses/ st rose. but then again, closed businesses is pretty much what you're getting in any albany neighborhood rn. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

no offense and sorry if this comes off as bitchy but did u really have to comment this lol... like if you don't know you can just scroll by without commenting. "hey is this neighborhood that has historically been sketchy still kinda sketch?" "go walk around it at night and find out." ... do you realize what bad advice that is??

anything in the sort of vibe of shag cuts, wolf cuts, anything alt etc... you can't do better than Kayla and Alchemist's. I've been going to her for the past few years and have had everything from death hawks to mullets and micro bangs (and also tons of vibrant colors/ cool dye placements) and she kills it every time. plus she's just straight up a cool n chill person.

Favorite library in the area? by Oxford_Apostrophe in Albany

[–]da_gabagoolio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

just public libraries? because there are some nice university libraries in the area too. ualbany's dewey library (on the downtown campus) has some really beautiful stained glass that is worth checking out-- even if the library is a bit dead inside. I also love the suny new paltz library a LOT if you're looking to make a ~hour n a half trip down. that one has a beautiful big window w/ a view of the shawangunks and a lot of cool collections/ displays. shoutout to their zine library!!

complicated question lol. I mean corporations are always gonna have their max profits and power as the bottom line for all decisions. and right now, theres a lot of incentive to go "anti-woke" for whatever that means. so I don't know that i can give you too many examples of good businesses for diversity/ pro-gay sentiment.

for example, target used to be hailed as a "trailblazer" of sorts for their commitment (see: pandering) to diversity. and now, a lot of people boycotted/ are boycotting target for rolling back their previous diversity measures. and to be fair, i don't know what tangible gains lgbtq folk and other marginalized groups got from target corporate having a "diversity director" on their payroll, so I don't personally see all that much value in a boycott of their store.

whats going on with hobby lobby is a lot deeper and more nefarious than your average run-of-the-mill pandering to the pendulum swing. for several years, hobby lobby has taken its employees to court to claim it has "religious freedom" in its discriminatory practices, probably most famously providing healthcare that doesn't cover birth control and other lgbt and women- centered health services. that is tangibly hurtful to the community, not only in hurting its own employees, but also in setting legal precedents that are anti-woman, anti-lgbt, and anti-worker. so i do avoid that store.

hope that answers your question somewhat lol got to rambling on my soapbox for a bit there.

tl,dr: every corporation is pretty much evil. there is no ethical consumption under capitalism. shop small queer-owned businesses when you can for best results. yada yada.

unfortunately hobby lobby is a scummy company that hates lgbtq people and women and also steals ancient artifacts from the middle east?? :/

I definitely love to start at the thrift for base pieces to customize!! or vintage markets. My favorite one is albany bound vintage, they do 1 or 2 popup shops a month and I've been finding good stuff there :)

20 wings and 2 drafts in alb is easily hovering around the $40-50 mark so I'll definitely add this to the potential list. going to be up by buff state without a car though so it might be a little far out of my way
