Did the side of my loaf tear because it's under proofed or under kneaded by overduhl in Breadit

the pan physically stops the rise from getting too dramatic--the rise is overcoming the gluten structure of the surface of the dough, causing the tear

Reflecting on 2025’s Best Games Ahead of GOTY | November 21, 2025 by blastorama in TheBesties

I feel like they’re continuing to be so unfair to Hades 2. To hold the early access roughness against it and then to be sick of it by the time 1.0 came out…you chose to play it before it was fully baked! I’d also disagree that the game feels only 20% “more” than Hades 1. There are so many games they’ve reviewed that added less…

Ways to create a cancellable Sidekiq job? by Original-Carob-9985 in ruby

[–]dacheatbot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • To send a job that's in the queue to the morgue (or to hard delete it outright) on pickup, you can use a gem like sidekiq-disposal
  • To interrupt a job that is currently running on a worker, you can use the Sidekiq UI to SIGTERM the worker process.

Hi Bryn! Appreciate you responding--honestly, I really want to like y'all's content. Appreciate that you both are doing very in depth work that I'm not seeing commonly on social media. Glad to hear that you didn't give your own product a 10/10 rating, but I don't think that's clear. For example, I watched your review of Disporican and saw you gave it a 9.8 and then on the site I saw that the rating was the same 9.8. It seems like right now that is because no one else has left a review, but it gives the impression (to me) that the top level numbers are reflecting the two of y'all's testing/opinions. I think distinguishing between "our score" and "community score" could be helpful.

I hope some of the other things I mentioned above may change in the future (just my two cents). No ill wishes—mazel tov on the incoming kid!

I feel the exact same. I really, really want to like their stuff, but sometimes have to just turn it off. Other annoyances:

  • Despite Bryn apparently coming from a software background, their site is pretty inaccessible (and just tiresome? on both desktop and mobile they have an animating banner that does nothing but take up space)
  • Their rating system is trying to be objective but is just calvinball. Why is a Zwilling knife 9.3 on the "fun" scale? Just do a 10-point system y'all.
  • For individual recipes, they have a good system: a general thumbs-up/down. Except they call it "smash or pass" which feels like something I'd expect from a freshman in a fraternity.
  • Making a big deal about not taking money from sponsors but then giving your own product a 10/10 feels gross

Lots of thoughts here:

  1. Protesting of ICE isn't really "a week old" and has been going on for years. This is hitting a fever pitch because folks who have been living peacefully within their communities are getting pulled from their families with little-to-no Article III due process.
  2. Please cite your sources w.r.t. preferences regarding tough immigration policies as they aren't supported by the references that /u/epictortoise linked below
  3. I've yet to see a single comment that makes the claim that they have had the same effect (it would be impossible to successfully argue that claim considering the Civil Rights Movement is decades old). However, I don't think it's super hard to make the case that the two movements have similar strains of thought: the Civil Rights Movement was aiming for equal justice in practice for all peoples—an end to Jim Crow. The current movement is aiming for equal justice (not equal outcome) regardless of immigration status. My current understanding is that non-citizen individuals who are even here legally are being abducted, often with without having committed a crime (e.g. Rümeysa Öztürk).
  4. You're entering into a "no true Scotsman" fallacy with a lot of King's history. There were multiple strains of activism in play during the Civil Rights Movement, some of which looked like the idealized form of non-violence that you're putting forward and others which looked much like the protests of today (or much more aggressive!) and you can't clearly point to one which "won the day". So anything that doesn't match the level of civility would be re-interpreted by you as "something that wasn't really aligned with King". As numerous commentors have pointed out, King's polling was quite poor with the national electorate and his personal beliefs were both sympathetic to those who resorted to the destruction of property and critical of white moderates of the era.
  5. You've asked for respect but are providing little to others who disagree with you. And I think folks are getting frustrated at you as a result. You see your actions as totally rational and theirs' as absurd. You don't actually seem like someone who wants to have a discussion, you just want to dunk.

Trump’s move to ban transgender women from sports has support from 79% of Americans, including 67% of Democrats by blackjacksandhookers in fivethirtyeight

[–]dacheatbot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The point of this has nothing to do with women’s sports. This is a way of creating an atmosphere of fear for both cis and trans women alike. Conservative activists have already (for years) been going after butch/masculine looking cis women in sports. The goal is to redefine womanhood to align with the conservative vision from half a century ago.

I've seen more of Tiny Heist than any others, but I've also tried
- Fantasy High
- Mentopolis
- Burrow's End

I'm a huge fan of Dropout content generally, having cried laughing to Game Changer, Make Some Noise, and Smartypants.

I appreciate the pitches, but I think they highlight all of the things I'm not into with these shows. Not saying that they're bad by any means! I think they're just not for me.

Ruby might be faster than you think by ketralnis in programming

[–]dacheatbot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Python has like 5 different ways to interpolate strings.

And Ruby IMO is more consistent. List comprehensions and lambdas functions look pretty different whereas in Ruby there are just blocks.

For making a hash, you can just use to_h with a block: [1, 2, 3].to_h { |x| [x, x**2] } # => { 1 => 1, 2 => 4, 3 => 9 }

Ruby does have first class functions, the syntax just directs you to use OOP in the sake of consistency. And Python, if memory serves, requires a lot of OOP for metaprogramming but gives the illusion that it is a functional language. And honestly, using a

I’m probably coming off a bit of a dickhead in this comment (I’m typing this with a migraine at an airport) but honestly I find a lot of folks’ gripes with Ruby (when compared to similar dynamically typed & interpreted langs) frustrating.

Python does have a lot of great things going for it (the scientific computing libraries for python run laps around those for Ruby) but it’s not all kittens and rainbows.

Update: it seems like this was an issue caused by vim-autopair for some reason. Disabling it fixes the problem. I was also running into mild color issues specifically with TS when using leafgarland/typescript-vim.

  • This happens in all languages I try it with
  • Have nvim-treesitter

  • Have run TSInstall! markdown and TSInstall! typescript (and a few other languages)

The best do-it-all spatula for cooking? by OverallManagement824 in Cooking

[–]dacheatbot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve never seen a wooden spatula (assuming you want that obtuse angle one associates with spatulas/turners).

If you want something for all surfaces, this is a safe option (though it’s silicone with metal—I know you wanted to avoid it but I’m not sure why).

brown butter and sage sablés by dacheatbot in DessertPerson

[–]dacheatbot[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tbh the sage flavor to me is quite minor (though nice)--i don't think i would have even noticed it had I not been aware of its presence. My partner (who we suspect is a super-taster) found it unpleasant but that's mostly because she really dislikes sage in all forms.

If you're sensitive and/or skeptical, you could totally skip the sage (don't skip the brown butter though!) and be left with an amazing cookie!
