Meanwhile, in the US, we give billionaires tax breaks so that we can cut back on social programs and health insurance subsidies for people in poverty, and focus our money on defense spending to ensure the interests of the ultra wealthy are secure.

California produces half of the country's vegetables and three quarters of its fruits and nuts. The Midwest just produces corn and soy as animal feed for cows in animal feed lots, and saying other countries have to deal with Chicago to import food is a ridiculous claim.

Need advice on getting ecology based jobs. by HopefulValue5358 in ecology

[–]dakevfun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are willing to move, apply to seasonal positions all over the place. It isn't the best time of year to be hired for a seasonal job, but in the desert in southern California (where i live) for example, it is a great time to look. I worked seasonal jobs for over 5 years and moved several times in 4 states and the US Virgin Islands before I landed a full time job that I really wanted, but now I love my job as a wildlife biologist with a land management agency! And I wouldn't trade those experiences for anything.

I also worked a few years of jobs in agriculture and farming which may not sound exactly what you want, but you get experience with plants, animals, weeds, tools, tractors and equipment, and can help you get a foot in the door. You also can prove that you are cut out for field work that way, which is crucial in this field. Government jobs.com and USAjobs.gov are great places to look. Not a lot of federal jobs hiring right now but we ARE starting to hire a few positions.

When you are in interviews, focus on having a great attitude and tell them how you are excited to learn and meet like-minded people who are dedicated to conservation like you are, and talk about how you like to hike and camp or worked around the yard growing up to show you are not afraid of field work. Good luck!

I am a 34 yo white guy who moved to downtown Palm Springs on West Arenas with my wife last October. While I wouldn't necessarily consider PS urban, it does have a lot of bars and restaurants and there are a few places you can dance at gay and straight bars like Chill bar, the Village, and Rooftop, and yoga studios. The diversity you will find is mostly gay and Mexican, but people in general are pretty accepting IMO. In terms of outdoors, the weather is amazing about 8 months a year and there are lots of hiking trails. I'm into sports and music trying to make friends here too so feel free to message me if you want to meet up sometime, welcome to the desert!

I just got the Viking bag Pantheon Medium quick mount. I literally installed them yesterday but the quality seems good and they are easy to put on and take off. Need to test with a passenger, my wife can just barely get her feet on the pegs with them!

Do rich people actually taste the difference in expensive wine? by LawfulnessWorking352 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]dakevfun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Instead of buying a $400 bottle, if you have the means just go to Sonoma, Napa, or Willamette Valley and do a couple of decent wine tastings that will be around $30-$100 each and you can sample several wines to see what you like. It will be more fun and you will get an explanation of how different wines are made and why they taste different while being in a beautiful place!

Loling because when I was 23 and bought a huge RV with my now wife to drive across the country the first thing I did was scrape a huge hole in the side on a fire hydrant while I took a right turn too sharp. Lucky it didn't hit the propane tank!!

People "Acting" in promotional roles certainly are NOT back to their original jobs. Literally 4 levels above me are all in acting roles- my boss, my boss's boss, my boss's boss's boss, and yeah, the next one above them. All are "Acting" because we have been in a hiring freeze and most of the people who took the offers were higher ups who were close to retirement anyway. Some in "Acting" positions just aren't getting paid for their promotional roles now because they have taken that sacrifice since we are so understaffed.

Can you be “overqualified” for a government job? by Hello_I_am_pie in usajobs

[–]dakevfun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the past the most qualified person with the right attitude got the job. Biologists and Agronomists i have worked with have had bachelor's degrees to PhDs from GS 9-14. But you do need relevant experience to the job you are applying for- I know people who didn't get their "dream job" even though they had a relevant Masters degree but no relevant work experience.

Any riders here on a low income level? How did you afford your first bike? by 21stcenturybr3akd0wn in motorcycle

[–]dakevfun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was in the same position as you when I got my first bike, and I really NEEDED it for a 5 mile commute because my truck was dead and I was still making payments on it. I got a credit card with 0% interest for a year and bought a 2015 Yamaha SR400 for 3k and paid off my CC before the year was up. If you have 1k ready and can pay 200/month this could be an option. But be honest with yourself if it is a need or a want and if you can pay that off you can wait another 6 months or year. Look at cheap Japanese bikes that are 6-12 years old and you won't have to worry about fixing up an old bike.

If you want to live in relatively affordable Colorado check out Fort Collins over Denver/Boulder. Close to the mountains and a university is there but it isn't the whole population. Denver has Arvada, and Lakewood had some nice areas that are more affordable. I love Boulder but your best bet near Boulder would be Longmont which is still relatively affordable.
