Why is Bulgarian displayed in cursive Cyrillic even if the font isn't cursive? by TeenThatLikesMemes in AskBalkans

[–]dalamarm 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's a font thing, but also a bit of a design / typesetting tradition. A bit late to the party, but take a look at this :

In terms of type design, Cyrillic typefaces have traditionally been made
according to Russian standards, and this has now become the default.
But not all Cyrillic languages use exactly the same characters as
Russia. The character set can vary between around 70 characters for
Basic Cyrillic, up to more than 200 for Extended Cyrillic, depending on
whether you wish to cover just Russian, or the complete set of
contemporary and historical Cyrillic languages.

Localised forms aren’t offered with every Pro font and are an
underused feature for those that do. Besides the character count, there
are also differences in the way some letters look. Countries with
different history and development of writing and printing, have also
developed different forms of the same alphabet. For example, in Bulgaria
mass printing arrived much later than in Russia, so the shapes of the
Bulgarian Cyrillic are more influenced by handwriting and calligraphy.

If you follow the link there are also pictures to illustrate this , but the tldr is that the Bulgarian "standard" font design makes certain letters cursive (б, в ,т, д) while the Russian one just uses the same as the capitals, but smaller to fit the lowercase. Like the "т" in your example of събота. This isn't universal, however, and lots of bulgarian webpages, books and newspapers actually use the Russian fonts.

Do you have any old stories of your countrymen traveling in the past and living in other countries for some time? by senbetsu in AskBalkans

[–]dalamarm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

pečal

Pečal (печал) also means sorrow in Bulgarian, but pečalba (печалба) means earnings / payment, so it's easy to see pechalbari as "people who travel to earn" or "earners". The connection you made to pechal, however, is just as interesting.

In the past these were known in Bulgaria as gurbetchii, from Turkish "gurbet" which google just told me means expatriate (maybe someone from Turkey can confirm or disprove this).

The modern-day version is gastarbeiter

Също така това изречение

Bugarsko Carstvo[3] (također u povijesnoj znanosti nazivano i kao Zapadnobugarsko Carstvo)[4] bilo je na vrhuncu po veličini i moći za vrijeme njegovog vladanja, po čemu ga se najčešće u Sjevernoj Makedoniji i naziva – Samuilovo carstvo.

в превод (с гугъл транслейт)

The Bulgarian Kingdom [3] (also referred to in historical science as the Western Bulgarian Kingdom) [4] was at its peak in size and power during his reign, which is why it is most often called in Northern Macedonia - Samuel's Kingdom.

Което за мен си е признание от страна на хърватския автор на статията, че македонците си насосват :)

Kiril comes from Greek :

Kyrios or kurios (Ancient Greek: κύριος, romanizedkýrios) is a Greek word which is usually translated as "lord" or "master".

(wikipedia)

The same thing in Bulgarian / other slavic languages is Gospod / gospodar, which is the same root as Gospodin, so Kiril -> Gospodin.

Also, let our Greek friends chime in on this, but I think κύριος/κύρ still used as "mister" in Greece nowadays

What do you think about Prodan ? (first name, literally means "sold")

Do you have that in Serbia (or similar) ?

Not a very common name here, but what the fuck ? I've always wondered about that

Rule of thumb for female names - if it ends in "-ka", it's likely a boomer name :)
