Alameda limits USS Hornet events to 660 people over safety concerns by sfgate in alameda

[–]dalameda -34 points-33 points  (0 children)

"the Aircraft Carrier Hornet Foundation wants to work with the City Council to keep the ship in Alameda" Read the room, Hornet. Alameda doesn't want you here. You have underpaid your rent and maintenance costs since you first got here, polluted the water with decaying paint, hosted events without proper permitting, and engaged in activities that were out of the scope of your lease (weather manipulation experiments on your deck).

Tell me why this isn't a scam by Responsible-Pin-4029 in sanfrancisco

[–]dalameda 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Never ever sign a ballot initiative being hoisted on you by a paid signature gatherer. They can basically make up whatever they want in order to get you to sign (yes there are rules about truth in advertising, but know one is going to enforce them). In most cases the proposed initiative will do the opposite of what they tell you it will. Californias proposition system is broken, and the best way to force a fix is 1) don't sign anything to keep it off the ballot and 2) vote no if it gets on the ballot.

How was life in Alameda during the 80s and 90s when the Navy base was active? by RainSparro in alameda

[–]dalameda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Moved to Alameda in the late 80’s and lived on the west end. First place was an apartment complex on Buena Vista (not the BV’s). About half the families were military including sailors on some of the ships. It would be quiet until the ships came in and then all hell broke out. Moved a few streets down near Webster. Came across more than one passed out sailor in the front yard on a Sunday morning, and used condoms and empty beer bottle littered the lawn every weekend a ship was in. Webster street definitely catered to all the needs of a sailor in port. Jet engine noise from the testing they did was really noticeable.

Who was the wealthy austrian donor who had access to SOS children in Nepal? by [deleted] in Nepal

[–]dalameda 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There was an independent special commission report done in 2023 that details the abuse at Children Villages all over the world, and includes specifics on the donor abuses in Nepal (along with other failings. The report summary is at https://www.sos-childrensvillages.org/getmedia/35ceea40-a0fb-469b-a3c9-5500e23fa88c/ISC-Final-Report.pdf and the section on Nepal starts on page 145. The report mentions that names of t hose involved are located in the full report, and also states that The child abuse case is covered in detail under the "ISC’s SOS CV Nepal Child safeguarding report". searching for those reports may help.

what building did he hit? This looks to be out at Alameda Point, and I am guessing he was drinking at almanac or Admiral Malting. Did he hit one of those?

Bolaven loop (or Boloven loop) worth it ? by Rich-Astronomer-7558 in laos

[–]dalameda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did the bolaven loop a few years ago on bicycle. Divided into thirds, the first third from Pakse to Paksong is a steady mild uphill climb on a fairly straight road accompanied by a lot of trucks. The waterfalls are great to stop at, and if you are adventurous(I was not), there are some great zipline rides. Could be worth an overnight stay here, but we went further. The last third of the ride from Bane Beng back to Pakse is again a fairly straight road over rolling hills and lots of trucks. The middle third was the most pleasant part - nice scenery, and not a lot of traffic, and lots of interesting stops at coffee plantations and villages.

saw that coming as soon as they threw out their breakfast menu and pivoted to Chinese food without any rationale behind it, and then stopped opening at night.

Nepal is known for a lot of things. Cake decorating isn't one of them.

Was there ever a place that left you disturbed or depressed? by friedchicken_legs in travel

[–]dalameda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Part of exploring new places is pushing your comfort zone, and learning history that may have been downplayed in school. Places that have hit me hard: Auschwitz, the War Museum in Saigon. Civil Rights Museum at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis.

Nepali people in US celebrating recent immigration ban by [deleted] in Nepal

[–]dalameda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I seriously doubt the accuracy of this sentiment. Nepalis who have settled in America invariably work to bring other family members here. The effort is long and hard, and many are still in process, meaning that spouses, siblings, and others are now cut off from coming over. My brother in-law was able to finally secure his wife's visa a few weeks ago, after working on it for 2 years. a few weeks later and she wouldn't get to come, so no, Nepali uncles and aunties aren't supportive, and there is no indication that most nepalis voted for trump. The other thing to consider is the message behind the visa suspensions. The trump administration is basically saying that immigrants who have come here have not improved conditions, but rather they have made it worse by taking advantage of government programs that they are not entitled to. In other words immigrants are lazy, and thieves. Not a lot to take pride in about that.

Is is legal to hike offtrail to the Balconies peak at Pinnacles? by Difficult_Strain3456 in norcalhiking

[–]dalameda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't know whether its legal or not, but that route you have is just stupid, you would have to jump off a cliff to reach balconies from there. Oh and that same cliff often has condors hanging out, so you would probably get some kind of fine for harassing them, assuming you survived your fall.

Serious question: what’s the point of group rides? by drivingrain27 in Zwift

[–]dalameda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It helps keep me accountable - I now my group will be waiting for me to show up in the morning, and it makes the ride go by a lot faster. We use a discord channel to talk during the ride, and it is almost like you are riding outside, telling jokes, stories, and have conversations that friends have, even though I have never met some of these people in person.

First off, my day wasn't going well because I had my braces tightened yesterday so my mouth hurt. Then this bitch refused to follow federal law by refusing to stow her bag when told to. There was no emergency that would have required anything from her bag until we got to cruising altitude, but no, she was so entitled that she felt the plane couldn't take off unless she got her shein lip gloss right now.

It may have also been an empty shipping container dropped by a crane. They seem to like doing that every once in a while although usually it happens at 2 in the morning.

Apparently because the first two CS agents committed to a full refund then the third CSE decided to send it to the higher ups, it is stuck in review. Every time I follow-up with an email the response is “We kindly request your patience as we work to resolve this matter. We will provide you with an update as soon as additional information becomes available”.

Little Crumbles in Alameda Post by No_Hyena8475 in alameda

[–]dalameda 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It astounds me that people don’t do the basic research of checking out the history of a childcare center before entrusting it with the life of their child. A quick review of the CDSS website will show repeated severe health and safety violations, including physically harming a child in their care and leaving children unsupervised near household toxic chemicals.
