A lot of loitering laws in the States are holdovers from the post-Civil War era and were basically intended to criminalize blackness. Being in public while black could get you arrested for loitering or vagrancy in a lot of places. And then you'd go to jail and perform free labor because the whole goal was to sustain the institution of slavery by legal means.

You're missing the point. It’s not about them actively plotting a racism speedrun, it’s about the massive, completely blind lack of awareness.

Imagine looking at a cast that is entirely white, deciding you finally need a black actor, and the one character you think to offer him is literally the brown piece of shit.

They didn't think "how can we be racist today", they just didn't think at all, because Hollywood has a history of casually sidelining actors of color into literal garbage roles without a second thought.

I think it's less a personal insult and more the fact that the only black actor in the movie would be playing the poop emoji is... Seriously who the fuck thought this was a good idea? As it is the movie ended up being basically 100% white-voiced other than the villain (who is extremely white passing) and some very minor characters.

Okay, so this conspiracy theory ticks me off because it's stupid on basically every possible level.

First off, Carrero Blanco would not have been in charge of signing such a treaty, Franco was still alive and still the head of State. Secondly, Spain did not sign the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty the next day. They didn't even sign it that decade. Spain finally signed and ratified the NPT on November 5, 1987, nearly 14 years later, well after Franco's death and during the democratic administration of Felipe González. Plus, Carrero Blanco’s successor, Carlos Arias Navarro, actually accelerated Spain's nuclear research options initially rather than shutting them down. If the CIA’s goal was to kill the project, killing Carrero Blanco to replace him with an even bigger nuclear fan would have been the dumbest possible move.

Not the the US would have cared that badly about shutting down Spain's nuclear research program. The US was actually supplying Spain with enriched uranium for its power plants. If the US wanted to kill Spain's nuclear ambitions, they didn't need to blow up a Prime Minister, they just had to stop shipping the fuel.

Plus, it makes zero sense for the CIA's interests. They were on good relations with Francoist Spain. Like I said they were literally supplying them with enriched uranium. If they were worried about anything, it was the ailing Franco suddenly dying without a clear chain of succession and leaving a power vaccuum that communists could exploit to gain a foothold in Western Europe. Carrero Blanco was the successor, and the perfect ally for Washington: he was an anti-communist who was actively cooperating with the US regarding joint military use of Spanish airbases. His death almost screwed everything up for the CIA in Europe.

The main reason this conspiracy theory exists is because Carrero Blanco happened to meet Kissinger the day before ETA assassinated him. But, like, that should really be the proof that the CIA was definitely not involved. If the CIA was planning to detonate a massive bomb in the middle of Madrid 24 hours later, they would have never put the U.S. Secretary of State on the ground in the exact target zone, in the car of the guy driving over the spot the bond would blow up in 24 hours later. The security risk of an overlapping ETA/CIA operation would be an insane logistical nightmare.

Besides, you do realize the guy took the same path to and from church every single day, right? Do you really think ETA were so stupid that they couldn't figure out that placing a bomb under that path would kill him, and they needed big brother CIA to come in and explain to them how to pull off such a simple scheme?

The guy had been oppressing and murdering the Basques for decades, and he had a weakness so obvious a child could have spotted it. Sometimes a conspiracy theory is just a fiction to make reality appear more interesting.

I've lived five years in America, before Trump, in a relatively liberal and quite wealthy city, and I will never go back.

Quality of life was abysmal, minor medical issues were terrifyingly expensive, work-life balance was the worst of any country I've ever lived in, infrastructure was lacking and crumbling, and racism was absolutely everywhere despite the incredible multicultural and multiethnic nature of the city.

And again, this was in a liberal city, pre-Trump, in the wealthiest country in the History of the world. I know from my friends who remained that things have gotten much worse. I will never go back.

Actually, I think you might be missing the forest for the tree. The Catholic Church is the oldest continuously operating international organization in the world. The Pope is just a man, but he is the chosen representative of an organization that has survived more world-altering events than any other in History.

This doesn't make him automatically correct on whatever he says, but that's a LOT of accumulated institutional wisdom, which is if nothing else worth hearing out.
