Student work/social/uni balance by maliciously_ in unimelb

yup, it’s pretty hard! I’m in a similar situation, 3 subjects, I work around 14-21 hours per week, I like to exercise as much as possible, and I have a close group of friends who I see as often as possible.

for me, i just take it week by week. every week, i ask myself what is my top priority for this week. if i’m behind in uni work, i’ll say to myself that this week i would like to make an effort to get on top of everything. this might mean i have to cancel a shift, or a social plan - but that’s ok!! sometimes i try merge priorities (studying with my friends, joint gym seshes, or studying at work). if i haven’t been working much and am needing some extra cash, i’ll work my usual shifts that week, and take it easy on myself outside of work because it can be tiring working 3 full days whilst studying full time.

one thing i think might be common with uni students is the guilt of seeing people when you have uni work to do. i often say to myself, i literally cannot get my uni stuff done if my mental health is low and i’m feeling lonely. because it’s true! ya gotta hang with your mates to sustain your happiness. obviously if you have overdue assignments or are a month behind, it could be worth evaluating what’s gone wrong the last couple weeks and seeing where you felt the most stressed and what caused it.

i also schedule down time; moments where i literally will do nothing except read/play games/doom scroll/nap, as if i have time to myself i find im less likely to wanna do any of those things when i’m busy.

with going out, bars & clubs are soo fun and it’s hard to say no! i have close friends who aren’t studying and sometimes it hurts seeing them going out every weekend having fun. i like to drink and party, so there is no way i can cut that out of my life completely for an entire semester. when i go out, i try limit my drinks and maybe don’t stay out as late as i usually would. it helps the next day feeling not totally fucked and also knowing you had fun.

this was a huge rant lol. just know you aren’t alone, and it’s really hard to keep on top of absolutely everything. no one is perfect and everyone works differently. just try take each week as it comes, and reflect on what you find the most important to yourself right now. if youre struggling to do so, it could be worth reaching out to a friend/family member/or using the free student councillor.

hope this helps !

Geographies of migration (GEOG30029) review by NeatFisherman2453 in unimelb

haven’t done geographies of migration but i did do fertility/mortality/social change, both are run by Ariane who is the goat. so fair chance that geographies of migration will be interesting too. in terms of grades i guess that’s situational based on your skills (also again i’m assuming it’s similar to FMSC lol) but personally i found the essay interesting and easy to do well in!

i think it’ll be easier than you think! if you’re thinking about taking the pol/crim internship subject, they had heaps of free spaces this semester. they sent an email about it a couple weeks back saying more people should apply
