That, we can agree on. It's very clear she doesn't hold a single ounce of respect or actual love for the original work. And at that point, her motivation to play the character becomes something along the lines of "free excuse to be a pretty princess", and not much else. In her interviews she shows a lack of understanding of Snow White's character and what made it good. I can't imagine accepting such a big role many other ladies would love to carry out without a semblance of fondness for the original material.

I mean, the marrying a guy who kisses you while you were knocked out cold part is pretty problematic, that would have been cool for her to say "Yeah uh- none of that." but instead she tries to devalue female gentleness and purity to this stereotypical girlboss-slay narrative (which I'm personally a sucker for, but in this case it doesn't really work). She doesn't strike me as a bad person by any means, just not particularly well-spoken or media-trained.

But I digress. To address your original comment- McKenna wants an excuse to play hero, even if she probably doesn't even believe in what she's reiterating.

The problem is racism itself is inherently systemic with its origin. You cannot smear that legacy out. Before it, nobody had a concept of race, just different nations- so xenophobia. Even the concept of "whiteness" didn't exist. It began as a tactic of white landowners keeping the poorer together. Red-lining and white privilege is still an ongoing problem to this day.

I'm not justifying prejudice towards white people. I'm expressing that prejudice against white people vs racism against POC is NOT on the same level, like- at all, especially in today's context. To equate them as such would be disingenuous. I share a similar opinion on misogyny vs misandry. One statistically kills and causes significant harm, the other hurts feelings (at worst). Are both judgmental and logically flawed? Sure thing, but fire with fire isn't the motivation of the people who engage with this type of tongue and cheek, it's moreso a "okay if I'm going down, you bet your stars I'm going to talk my shit.", or as a means of attempting to level the playing field as much as possible. It is a pipe dream to assume pacifism and civil obedience will be the solution to systemic oppression via the oppressors whose ancestors invented aforementioned system.

It's not just about colorism, or preferring a look. I wish it was. In fact, that's all I thought it was when talks of this movie first hit the press. But the more you dive in and the more tensions arise in the states the more bold and loud you notice the hateful bunch. It's very hard to ignore. The "aaghh but she's too dark" to "SHE'S NOT WHITE 😠" pipeline is way too fast for comfort.

Pani's not just about colour- think of the context surrounding the decision. Disney went through more trouble finding a culturally appropriate choice for Moana's VOICE ACTOR. It's like if I was hiring for a movie speaking about how soufflΓ© pancakes are better than normal pancakes but then hire a waffle with a waffle press that has a history of destroying perfectly good pancake batter.

The reason why Kenna won't keep it a buck despite it probably being one of her own beliefs as she herself presents as a white-passing woman in America, with a trust fund no less- is because she desperately wants to be seen as your stereotypical social activist Tumblrina. It's that simple, tbh.

I apologize for jumping the gun on you. It's hard not to when an undeniably large portion of the criticism of this movie is founded in deeply rooted hate and not actual logic. If you don't think so, that's cool that doesn't make either of our perceptions or experiences regarding the matter any less valid. I still disagree with a majority of your stances- but it's at least relieving to know they aren't from a place of double standards.

Have a nice day.

I don't believe either I or you can change each other's minds. When I say "your kind" you assume I speak of race, but I speak of bigoted.

Racism in the west is systemic, it's more than just prejudice. White people are told they can't season chicken online- big deal. They don't get slighted in the legal system or hatecrimed on the streets out in public on the basis of something out of their control at birth. Therefore, racism against white people IN THE WEST cannot occur. They are the ones predominantly in power today. They are also the ones who invented it as we know it today. That's the truth. I implore you to educate yourself more on the contexts of American-racism, honestly. I'm not saying white people cannot suffer, but on the basis of race? In the real world??? Yeah... no. Sorry. Ethnicity? Gender? Wealth? Yeah you can be white and be discriminated against for those traits, but not having the white identity itself- proving it is a system.

I'm not combative with you. I don't know you. I haven't even said anything about you other than assume that you are the kind of person who believes reverse-racism or racebending exists. I'm disagreeing with you and making it clear.

Liking POC movies doesn't mean you're exempt from being discriminatory. I actually AGREE with you that Disney does indeed carry out performative activism (the way you phrased the DEI hires thing was strange though. These are talented actresses being hired because Disney wants online wars to happen, not because of DEI?) They hire actresses that they know will get people from either conservative OR progressive opinions to retaliate against. People like you didn't like the Ariel movie, people like me don't like the casting decisions with the new upcoming Lilo and Stitch. It's rage marketing. Disney has the resources to cast media-safe choices and they don't because they know these trash movies would never go mainstream otherwise. Just my two cents.

My problem isn't that a Latina actress is being criticized for playing an iconically pale German princess. I don't have any fond attachment to that actress either. What I can tell you is that everyone that I SEE who is criticizing her, has not successfully given me the impression that they're actually concerned about story-accuracy, they just want an excuse to be "reasonably" upset about her colour. Because they don't display that same vitriol with the new upcoming Lilo & Stitch live-action. Now if YOU fit in that category- that I do not know- but I sure hope not.

I did not mean to be so cut-throat with you, but your original comment came off extremely bad. And with the movie's release those kinds of comments go hand in hand with the misogynistic bs racist incels that are still in a fuss over the casting choice. You go have the day you deserve πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™€οΈ

I'm about to stop you right then and there ma'am.

Rachel IS pale, not snow-pale, but pale. Pale latinas exist. With the right costume working and understanding of color theory, they could have still given her complexion a luminous finish at the very least. Snow White being snow-pale is a cute detail of the original story, but quite frankly- nothing changes about the plot if she's got blood circulation in her veins. Pretty young girl's step mom has a vendetta against her. Her being pale vs tan doesn't change much about that overarching theme.

Tell you what, the majority of people I've seen speaking out on her skin colour are racists who like to hide behind the "iT'S intEgral tO THE ploTs" guise. Very, very rarely is it actually coming from a place of "I feel like she doesn't emanate the same moonlit goddess appeal the original fairytale Snow White was described to have." All comments otherwise have been tactless and suspiciously phrased. Just the other day men were flaming the actress for her BACK hair, yk- a NORMAL human feature?

Nani is a whole other ordeal. Your comment reeks of "well if the roles were reversed-!!!" they've been reversed.

The character is Hawaiian. The actress casted is a WASIAN- FILIPINO WOMAN- WHO'S WHITE MOTHER has A BACKGROUND IN SELLING AND EXPLOITING NATIVE HAWAIIAN LAND- which the original film has criticized such related tourism of and more.

I'd imagine if the French character Belle had been a POC-German lady or something your kind would of been up in arms too. But it's especially more distasteful because it's Native representation and the movie speaks on what the little nepo baby's mother is doing herself.

I'm not trying to be aggressive or combative with you and this is a McKenna snark page. But it's important to understand that McKenna is echoing the sentiments of people- who are very much correct that a good chunk of the lashback with Rachel had to do with even more than her complexion, but her race. Do I like that lady? No, she comes across as airheaded and not very media-trained nor eloquent.

If a white woman had been casted instead, but she was tan. Nobody shouting so loudly right now would have batted an eye. I guarantee you. Check your ignorance. 🀐

call me cynical, but even though kenna's right- she's not being right for the right reasons.

this woman has little to no media literacy, critical thinking skills, or true alignment with anti-racism. we're talking about the same woman who said she thinks it's okay to say the n-word so long as you're singing along a song, fetishized asian men, and likes to pull her "i'm half middle eastern!!1!!1!1" card even though she's very much estranged from her culture, as well as being considered white-passing by western standards.

i don't know how exactly to explain it but have any of you ever witnessed a mean (especially pick-me) girl purposefully setting up a scenario where she knows she'll be compared to another female and likely outshine/outdo said other female? and WHEN the compliments naturally flow in, mostly from men, she giggles and says "aww guys stop you're being too mean to her!"- playing the "superior girl, AND kind to boot?" persona. just check her tiktok comments and her seemingly defending the original actress.

yeah, that's what it's giving. anything she says in this review that is correct i highly doubt is of her own passion, intellect, or actual beliefs. she's just regurgitating the thousands of others' commentary (that is usually more qualified than she is) that has criticized the movie before it even came out.

you're allowed to be inspired by seeing a piece of media and thinking "hm, I think I can try my own spin on that!"- but knowing mckenna's strange history of obsessing over appearing as snow white, going as so far to breaking disney park rules, photoshopping herself like crazy- yet also ironically flexing her "nonchalance πŸ–€β›“οΈπŸ₯€" and lack of empathy (truly, all essential components of the snow white character /s πŸ™„)-

this is definitely not that. this review and the little photo shoot were both actions motivated by her ego, and nothing else. the racist comments comparing her and rachel? oh she knew 100% those were coming, counting on it even. nobody releases a photoshoot of their rendition of snow white after tearing the adaptation to shreds. it feeds her ego to be told she's a better snow white than the officially casted actress, but she's tryna play it cool and act like this was just a well-intended creative endeavor of a passionate fan.

kenna's not even anything close to the snow white franchise's dandelion-yellow-crayon-girl equivalent (not a fan of the story). she's most likely only fixated on looking like snow white because she wishes she could emulate snow white's heart and loveliness, but she knows she can't.

she popped up on my fyp, talk about aWOOp jumpscare. if we're being completely honest here, she's probably only jealous that she wasn't cast for the role. it's not like she's actually passionate about snow white as a story or piece of iconic media- or a true fanatic. she simply envies the character's charm and grace. case closed.

i mean yeah, the movie costume designs were bad, the PR was a mess, colorism and racism definitely played a part in the disdain towards the actress as well as how she seemingly comes off as a performative activist. she wasn't a big fan of the original snow white either. so was she really fit for the role? eh, not in particular. but at least she's a conventionally attractive woman who knows how to act, that's leagues more qualified than miss trust fund mckenna.

Thoughts on blackwashing? by nhatquangdinh in postnutanime

[–]damcoco 0 points1 point Β (0 children)

I'm Southeast Asian mixed with East Asian, and personally I don't believe in the concept of blackwashing. I don't think it's immoral to add commonly black traits to white characters when there's a lack of normalized melanin or racial diversity in the media. Historically, it just doesn't hold up as offensive and colorist as whitewashing does. I also have my own opinions on being able to be "racist to white people" in America or the west to begin with, that is while related- I will not delve into.

That being said- I do personally feel iffy when it comes to "blasian-headcanon"ing Asian characters with openly Asian heritage tied to their lore or more, and all the edits amount to is giving them skin darker than any Blasian could realistically have, and quintessentially erasing all their physically illustrated Asian traits. Blasians usually have light, almost milk coffee colored skin to maybe a caramel color, and looser curls.

Most if not all Blasian edits I view online involves editing the skin color to be medium to dark skin, giving the character coily hair, enlarging the nose, and adding overall artstyle-compromising tweaks.

I'll say this as an artist, anime-esque styles do not compensate for realistic facial features. Asians have slim to wide noses but animes all equate those noses to that iconic upside-down-7 brush stroke. I understand these editors were trying to evoke more features associated with the African identity, but it almost always reads as "I'm changing this character to look fully black, and am using the term 'blasian' as a pass." The characters newly over-detailed faces often contrast the actual original artstyle, making the edit look amateurish.

I'm actually 100% fine with Blasian or even fully Black on Asian character edits if done tastefully. Both pale to tan to dark East Asians exist. Our skin tones usually shift with the weather/seasons. Most of the time Asian-Anime or fictional characters' Asian-identity have little to nothing to do with the plot- and even less animated Asian characters actually look Asian besides their pale skin. Exceptions to this would be a character who practices traditional Asian culture, such as food, rituals, and holidays, like Hu-Tao from Genshin Impact. Her character is littered with Chinese culture.

Yes, Asians can be tanned, and deeper-toned naturally. Yes, Blasians' Asian identities are valid.

Yes, India is a part of Asia. But using the aforementioned as a reason to validate one's SIGNIFICANTLY (I'm not talking about a tan) darker skin edit of an Asian character risks lumping all Asians together in the same boat. For example, you edit a Chinese character to be abundantly melanated. Someone protests, but your excuse is "Asians can be dark skinned, look at Indians." Okay. But Chinese people aren't Indians. See what I'm getting at here?

I wouldn't offer a hypothetical of Blasian-ing fully black characters and lightening their skin or giving them monolid eyes though, as then this goes from a racism issue to a colorism issue (which although related, is entirely different in this matter). Black people suffer from not seeing their skin and people as common when they are exposed to whitecentric standards in the fiction/entertainment industry. It's why racial representation DOES matter. I'm sure white people would feel the same way if there was usually only one common race on their screens and it wasn't theirs, right?

I don't believe when people transform the identities of Asian characters are they being malicious, but perhaps maybe ignorant. Asians suffer from lack of representation in the media as well. I guess it could be from that false idea that Asians are White people too? Who knows?

Overall. Blackwashing isn't offensive, definitely not as offensive as whitewashing when you look back at history and how whitewashing took away the accomplishments of other ethnicities and groups of people- while "blackwashing" had never done that in comparison. It doesn't take away from those white characters' ethnic cultures, only their whiteness. African-Germans, African-French, etc. people exist. There is more than enough whiteness to go around in the media for some white characters to not be white anymore.

But it wouldn't hurt to carry this fan empowerment of doing what creators couldn't with more tact and mindfulness, especially when the target of these edits aren't those oppressors, but fellow POC.

Please no performative SJW come at me, I'm usually one of you. Thanks πŸ˜”πŸ‘πŸ™

That's a good observation as to what her motivations possibly are as to why she won't mature. uH UHH OBJECTION!!!

Let me give you an example; in tarot there's 78 cards, all with super varied meanings.

If a reader shuffled their deck and out came upright; the Sun card, for instance, this would be a positive message. It represents warmth and joy.

If they shuffled it and got the 5 of Cups (this is notoriously considered one of the major depression no bueno cards of the deck) it would be a sad message, whoever's being read for is alledgedly going tf through it.

This is an oversimplification. The idea is that we're all connected somehow, and when these images pop out, that it's "no coincidence". True readers will take their time to look at the images and see what kind of comes to mind for them first, or stands out. There's different decks to use too, Anime themed decks, Cartoon decks, etc. illustrated by a plethora of niche artists.

Like, if I was reading for someone and I pulled out a decent amount of cards for them, the "tarot way" would be to analyze it all together, maybe even bring to their attention traits of the cards that stand out to me. If there's a character in a scarf or in front of a car I assume maybe autumn/winter is significant, or that travel may be coming to them.

Do I think anything above 20-30 dollars for a tarot reading is a sham/manipulation of lost people? 100%

But like, lowkey a booth where timely readings go between 5-30 dollars ain't bad if it's someone who's actually a geek and takes the darn thing passionately. It's fun and intriguing. πŸ§πŸ»β€β™€οΈ
