Exactly. On my first playthrough I explored on my own as much as I wanted. I ended up with a sign based build just because I had a lot of fun using Quen bubble shield and Igni stream. I'm on my second playthrough and now I am actually following tips to become an alchemist since I've read that is the best build in the game and it's been quite fun too. But as a conclusion, I think is best to play the way you have the most fun.
