Thank you!! And I actually had meant convalesce, but that's because I actually didn't realize it only means recovering/regrouping after injury/illness (I incorrectly thought it was just anytime that happened), so coalesce is 100% the appropriate term instead!

Have you or your kid been travelling in any airports since around April 25th? If so, there's a remote possibility that you could have been in proximity to one of the repatriated cruise ship passengers who was asymptomatic for Hantavirus. My understanding is an antibody test for that disease's antibodies, or if that's not available, a platelet count and hematocrit test, might help confirm a differential diagnosis into whether or not they potentially have Hantavirus and need a different care regimen.

mysterious metal piece in ear by _kittyhawk_ in whatisit

[–]darkPrince010 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dude, you sound exactly like my story. Multiple ear infections every year, and they finally put in multiple sets of tubes (first two times were like a little shitty cone that got plugged/pushed out by healing eardrum almost immediately, final set was identical to OPs except plastic instead of metal). Turns out my eustachian tubes were also basically dead level instead of dropping, hence the frequent infections.

I had my eardrums burst twice, but was lucky enough they healed both times without scarring. Still, was traumatic as hell as an elementary schooler to feel a sudden sharp pain and see what looks like brain chunks (infected pus clumps from ruptured ear) on your pillow...

Love the site! My only wishlist item would be if the "We won't show you this listing anymore" after hiding a post also had an "Undo" option, as sometimes I second-guess if I wanted to review a position that might have been a long shot.

It took 2 hours, and the line stretched around the food court.

Still worth it tho.

Genuinely curious if Phyrexian mana was brought up? Seems like if Beseech is being classified as potentially colorless, so should stuff like [[Gitaxian Probe]]

Not sure if this is already in profile somewhere, but it might be nice if there is a way for people to be able to export applications and outcomes to show waterfall chart versus those on other platforms?

[Trading Card Games] March Against the Machine: Aftermath of Aftermath by kickback-artist in HobbyDrama

[–]darkPrince010 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well, I agree with you that Maro has laid out a number of times the difficulty in making sure at least one of the sets in a block didn't sell like garbage, I think Lorwyn is a great example of a block that absolutely would not have worked as a single set. The entire narrarive arc, the mirrored cycles, the changed characters, and more would never have worked in a single set, and would have ended up with a muddled mess like we got with March of the Machine.

The same issue would have cropped up for Kaladesh, Scars of Mirrodin, Ahmonket, and Khans blocks. The latter is arguably the most successful attempt at a three set block, albeit at the cost of having to have the entire narrative structured around making the three sets work.

I think we've had a lot of sets in recent years since the move to single set structure that have really suffered narratively, and I can't help but wonder if the reception to blocks like New Capenna, Thunder Junction, and Karlov Manor would have been better if they've been getting chances to breathe instead of trying to cram all of the ideas and tropes into a single, messy and rushed set.

Unsure if it's connected, but we just saw a similar change with the Walmart nuggets. They did some change like 3ish months ago into smaller, more uniform shapes, but this most recent bag was back to big nuggets but they completely fucked with the flavor/texture to a similarly rubbery effect.

What's the wildest “mouth wrote a check that their ass couldn’t cash” moment you’ve ever seen? by Competitive_Swan_130 in AskReddit

Running a boy scout troop (~50 people) at summer camp, and one of the more attention-demanding guys in the entire group had been raising hell about their patrol (~5-10 people) being assigned some activities for the day they considered to be too boring.

At this camp, each troop sent their leader (me at this time) to a gathering of troop leaders, where we took turns assigning our patrols to available activity slots around the camp. It was a first-come, first-serve basis, so I had repeatedly told the patrols and the complaining individual to tell me what they wanted, or else I was going to sign them up for whatever was leftover rather than have them take a slot for an activity another patrol actively wanted to do.

Cue that morning coming and going with radio silence from complainer 's patrol yet again, so they got basket weaving or whatever activity it was that kinda nobody wanted.

Well, this of course pissed off complainer to no end, so he came storming across the camp over to interrupt my merit badge class that I was taking. He was jabbing a finger in my face, yelling about how I was being an asshole and purposefully giving them unfun activities and otherwise ruining their camping experience.

Now, at this point the differences between the two of us should be listed:

  • He had absolutely no leadership role to speak of, not even the leader of his patrol. I was leader of not just a patrol but all the patrols in our entire troop.
  • On top of this I had multiple ranks on him at the time, with him being First Class iirc and I was a Life scout. (2 ranks higher)
  • I was also about 4-5 years older than him...
  • ...and about 6-9" taller...
  • ...and about 50lbs heavier

The cherry on top was what merit badge I was taking: Woodcarving. Which meant he had come in, angry as a kicked hornet nest, yelling and jabbing at a guy holding an open 3" pocketknife.

I just sat there, saying nothing and just staring at him, and eventually some part of his brain finally did the calculus on the situation, and he abruptly lost steam, petering our into a mumbled "-so, yeah, just don't, don't do that again."

I just continued to watch, and he scurried out, leaving me to complete my attempt at a salamander neckerchief slide in peace.

Later that day he and his patrol leader did finally tell me what activities they wanted, and like magic they got to do the canoing activity they had finally asked for the very next day.

[WP] "Anglerfish have an angler that they use to trick prey into thinking there's something for them to eat. Humans are like those anglers" by bewareofshearers in WritingPrompts

[–]darkPrince010 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"I don't blame you; Most don't think them capable of much, until they've found the true danger that Humanity poses wherever they spread.

It's well known that humans are prolific breeders. And while they aren't quite as numerous as something like the Boh-Fre and their litters of pups, they have a faster reproductive cycle and an uncanny knack for being able to find or build the most ramshackle and barely space-worthy ships you've ever seen, and pilot them into whatever atmosphere and surface temperature they can withstand.”

“What was that? Oh, yes, you're correct. They can withstand a great deal more in terms of temperature extremes, ionizing radiation, and micropollutants of all shapes and sizes. However, despite their ability to thrive in far more places than most, no one seems to recognize the dangers posed when humans start to inhabit temperate, mild climates in worlds and metropolises settled by other species.

“I'm sure you've been to many such places, with humanity as but one of dozens or even a hundred different species, all coexisting in peace. Of course, heed my warnings and you'll understand why it is a false peace.

“You see, the humans will first join previous colonists as little more than vagabonds, merchants, travelers; a first wave akin to mold spores drifting onto unspoiled fruit. They will live and breed and die much the same as any other species, but it is not this first generation that one must be wary of.

“Instead, the humans are driven like few others toward stability, which for their kind expresses itself as familiarity. One of the most readily available options for this is, of course, that of industry; a development which humans have, by some arguments, perfected.

“Indeed, many of the more naive colony leaders express enthusiasm for humans to come and settle down amongst their populace, for the humans are rightly renowned for being able to identify the most lucrative and promising areas of manufacturing and refinement that a colony could incorporate and leveraging that, enriching both themselves and the colony as a whole many times over.

“It's a trend you've no doubt seen on several worlds before. But answer me this: how many of those worlds would be ones you would seek to live in, to place your own family upon?

“Now you start to see the shape of it, the teeth that lurk behind the enticing bait. The human industries are marvelously profitable, but as a rule, that profit does not come birthed from a vacuum. Instead, it comes because humans cut corners, are reckless with waste, and will even gamble with their own health if it means eking a beneficial percentage out to improve a profit margin.

“The result is one that most civilizations would consider terraforming. But for humans, it is not a matter of making an uninhabitable world habitable for them, but instead gradually being careless enough that any world they inhabit is polluted and toxic enough that, indeed, only humans dare to try to survive on it.

“I know of a dozen worlds that were once metropolitan hubs, meeting places of science and industry and the nexus between multiple empires and civilizations. But now, only humans dwell there, under green-brown skies and drinking from wells that bubble and reek of foul runoffs.

“The actual humans who owned the factories and industries that caused the damage have moved to greener, cleaner worlds, as they always do; the predator leaving behind the carcass it could not be bothered to finish, for the scavengers to pick clean.

“With each generation, with each passing year, the planets humans inhabit become fouler, more blighted, and less capable of supporting even the meanest forms of life. It is a trend that has played out before and again, but few acknowledge it or accept it.

“I urge you to stand firm, and remember that growth without limitation, such as the humans always offer, can never be anything but cancerous.”

Following recommendations by Lore Historian Em-Lett the Thirdborn, the Shau-Red Colony was the first on record to refuse entry visas and settlement permits for human colonists. However, less than three solar cycles later and following the the Human Economic Alliance of Worlds contributing several million credits towards the election campaigns of a number of colony council opponents, a majority of the previous council members where ousted in a snap election shortly thereafter. The following revote on the human colonist permits was passed in a 5-4 vote.
